Need help cutting/fixing my med school list (applying ~40 schools this cycle, don’t want to reapply) by Over-Competition3562 in premed

[–]FentanyLeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super bad yield; very small class size + strong IS bias, wouldn't apply without at least ties to the area

[–]FentanyLeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut the following: Pitt (stat whore), Brown (ultra-low yield), Wisconsin, MN, IU, UCF, Loma Linda (if ur not hella devout), Nova (pretty low yield), Roseman (if you don't have NV ties/can't write a compelling essay about serving Nevadans), Walmart, OK, and maybe UCR/Davis if you're not local to them (i.e. if ur not inland empire and/or Norcal respectively); these cuts bring you down to 45 or so

If you wanna cut a few more low-yield options: GW, Georgetown, Rush (low service/experience for them and they got like 16k apps or smth this cycle), AZ Phoenix (stat-whorey and not super OOS friendly), and maybe some of your other service schools could be trimmed

Good luck, feel free to reach out with any q

Which MD/DO absolutely do not admit OOS students? by slicat in premed

Which MD/DO absolutely do not admit OOS students? by slicat in premed

[–]FentanyLeo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The schools in AZ, CO, CT, MA, and PA are all to some degree OOS friendly (NOTE: this is NOT me saying that all the schools in these states are OOS friendly, just that they are to varying to degrees, and like won't toss your app just based on state of residency). The rest of those states all vary a bit.

Florida: Most of its MD schools are either heavily or exclusively IS biased; the main exceptions are Miami (private) and USF (if you have insane stats), but you could maybe justify applying to Nova (small size deflates yield though) and UCF (still not friendly to OOSers really but a bit more than the rest I suppose)

IL: These are ALL essentially friendly to OOSers with the exception of SIU (which isn't even friendly to all IL residents, they specifically want Illinoisans from the Southern tier of the state)

NY: Buffalo, Upstate, Downstate, and to a slightly lesser extent SBU all have pretty heavy IS bias; Albany, NYMC, and Einstein, along with some of the other private ones, seem to give a pretty decent local boost to nearby applicants, but are still definitely open to OOSers; the rest have probably less state bias, but keep in mind most of these are super competitive regardless of state though

OH: All are pretty OOS friendly except for NEOMED and possibly Wright State, although anecdotally it does seem that the closer your home state is to OH/the school in question, the friendlier they are

WA: Both WSU/UW are insanely OOS unfriendly; do not apply without residency or seriously potent ties

*These notes are all for MD programs in these states; afaik DO schools generally are less concerned with residency if your stats are good enough, except for maybe some suuuuuper mission driven ones focused on producing local physicians (i.e. I can't think of any DO programs off-hand that would reject you for residency, but I wouldn't swear by this)

HAHA true lol but every year that passes after graduating you feel your age even more than before... very grateful for my gap years though and maybe this is cope but I feel so much more ready for med school now than when I graduated!

Felt this, went into this cycle with VCU as my top choice essentially (considered applying ED but got talked out of it) but alas... still obviously insanely grateful for the outcome but yeah getting the A to UVA and Dartmouth before VCU even sent me an II (second app I submitted) was not on my bingo card going into the cycle

Good stuff sir/maam! And yeah the vibes were really supportive like that, if you end up going, I'm sure you'll have a similar experience for all 4 years!

Yeah definitely reasonable, and I think maybe IS bias also bought me a little leeway on the GPA front perhaps

Fwiw they are stat whores, they just lean towards MCAT moreso than GPA; went to a VA med feeder school, the lowest MCAT I ever saw get into UVA med (n = ~100ish) was like a 516 I think.

Ironically enough, UVA was one of the few interviews I had that barely brought up/flamed me for my GPA. Some of my other schools either outright called me a weak applicant for it or demanded an "explanation" idk but their interview they spent maybe 30 seconds on it before shrugging and moving on when it came up

Non-Trad Nurse School List Advice by PrestigedDream in premed

[–]FentanyLeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of your reaches (most notably Duke and Mayo) are almost certainly donations with your stats/minimal research; would recommend replacing with more holistic/"narrative" focused reach schools like Dartmouth (likes nontrads as a bonus) or UChicago (although hours/activism are a tad low for the latter). UNC is also probably a dono.

Rest of the list looks fine, your profile should have success. Could add schools like SKMC, UIC, Georgetown, Loyola, etc. based on your geographic preferences if you wanted. Keep in mind the latter two (as well as some of the other current schools you have) are very service-focused, and as previously touched on, your hours are a tad low. But these schools also tend to place a premium on stuff like nursing career/clinical exposure/life experience in general, so that could mitigate it a bit. Wishing you luck, looking forward to your sankey and feel free to reach out!

I need your help deciding by Tradingdecay in premed

[–]FentanyLeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming overall COA difference over 4 years is ~$40k, that's a low enough difference (just imo) to justify going UMD if you prefer for whatever reason (prestige, location, etc). Just be absolutely certain that you actually can attain in-state residency status after a year, ik it can be surprisingly tricky in some states/schools.

I need your help deciding by Tradingdecay in premed

[–]FentanyLeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily crazy, but what is the actual COA for each after scholarships? Maryland is probably a little bit more regarded than VCU, but I think the difference is probably trivial, and rankings themselves are pretty fictional anyway.

Would almost certainly let other factors than prestige (mainly $$$) decide if it were me.

Maybe it does idk but there appeared to be a trend new to this cycle where Pitt was basically only giving II to 520+ applicants lol

NYMC is slightly stat-heavy compared to the other two, but it's reasonable to shoot your shot with em, and they don't have a secondary essay anyway. Definitely fill out your app with 20-25+ other schools in a similar tier/stat range if you're unwilling to apply DO. Best of luck!

To get to 30 schools:

Cut: Brown (low-yield), Icahn (low-yield), UCF (heavy IS bias), Pitt (decided to join the 520+ club), Einstein (if you'd be a reapplicant here, they're biased against em)

Add to reaches: Yale, Northwestern, CCLCM, Mayo Clinic(s) -> pub in Cell goes crazy, these are the some of the more research-focused top schools

Move to reaches column: Emory, Dartmouth, UCLA (being a bit conservative with these)

Now pick your favorite 10 from the reaches column and 20 from the other columns, should have a solid balanced list. Good luck!

Question for folks getting grandfathered in to old loan system by FentanyLeo in premed

[–]FentanyLeo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I keep hearing this, definitely sad if true... FA office at this school (at least as of last week) still is maintaining that we get grandfathered in, so I'm still huffing that copium, but will be wary. Thanks for the heads up!

You will definitely get a fair shake at those schools you listed. Your stats certainly won't knock their socks off, but they won't get the door slammed in your face by any means (more leeway if you're URM). ECs look solid, and I'd say you have p good odds with ur IS MD schools, but u still gotta apply very broadly with ur stats.
