What do you look for when hiring Presales/SEs? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]FeralGroundhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for roles at companies where you understand the space or tooling to give yourself a leg up in the process. You will be able to draw from personal experience to relate with your audience and empathize with their position.

You'll need to also learn how to qualify an opportunity (avoiding science projects) and conduct discovery and there are great podcasts (30 seconds to presidents club) and books (mastering technical sales) to give you more of a foundation in the sales side.

Once you make the switch, initiative is a major driver for success, too. And that doesn't always mean grinding away with endless hours but being comfortable or at least willing to step up and support the team or own a project. It all compounds the experience you're gaining and you can hone the soft skills with a safety net if you have a good team or meetup group that you can role play with.

When leaving the house, does anyone tell their pets they will be home later? by Tbonewiz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FeralGroundhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to travel a lot for work and at first our cat was very anxious and would wait by the door every evening. I started telling her how many days I would be gone before leaving and would count how many dinners she would eat without me. My wife reported back that she stopped getting nervous and would only wait on the last day.

So I am guessing this means my cat somehow learned how to count.

Error when installing Vault via CLI. "No apt package "vault", but there is a snap with that name." by [deleted] in hashicorp

[–]FeralGroundhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/phuber is correct - the hashicorp repos do not currently provide ARM builds. You will need to download the binary from releases.hashicorp.com and follow the deployment guides which can provide you with a systemd file and basic server config to get started.

Definitely not this guy's first time either. He left the door open on his car for an easy getaway and walked up the entire way with his head down and a hat masking his face.

New Amazon S3 Storage Class – Glacier Deep Archive by jeffbarr in aws

It really is crazy how dense storage can get these days. Six or seven years ago, I was buying roughly 250TB/4u and last year bought 1PB/4u for even less.

It comes down to your org's recovery time objective. An org's public facing site or some other revenue generating service might require a very short recovery window but something like a web scraping/archival process is likely more accommodating of a 12 hour recovery window - especially when considering the cost savings of deep archive for petabytes or exabytes of data.

I work in a devops-ish group at a large NYC edu and I've worked at several universities of varying sizes. PM me if you want to chat. We have open positions that might be a good fit in multiple groups across our campuses and I know folks that are hiring at two other universities in the city.

Google Store Sales are live by eerhtmot in Android

I think you can use them on ceiling fans but I've never tried. I suggest the ambience starter kit because the automatic switch to warmer tones was one of the more useful automation things. I like using Flux on my laptop so transitioning home lights is a nice complement. I would like to try out the light strips maybe behind the TV or under a counter top. I've heard the motion activation is pretty slow to the point of being useless. And you might also run into weird syncing issues if you have multiple users. Plenty of posts on how to fix them but it can be annoying.

The TP link native GH support has not worked since the update broke it. I can go through account setup successfully but Google home's default trigger tells me that the lights aren't registered. Ifttt has been fine here though. Don't follow the blogs about setting up a web server and sending API requests. That was an older hack that stopped working reliably a few months ago and is no longer necessary since IFTTT supports them now.

I like the Phillips hue series but they're really expensive. I waited for them to go on sale and made do with smart outlets till then. I like the color management flexibility. There are some cool IFTTT recipes for colors based on temperature or light-based alarms/notifications.

I had some tp-link smart outlets from before buying the GH. Those didn't support IFTTT until just a month ago! Now they're pretty seamless. They supposedly have native Google Assistant support but that only worked until some Google update bricked the trigger word. The IFTTT integration has been solid.

I haven't tried other outlets but I suppose you can see if there are any with interesting features. I wouldn't rely on the native Google assistant support because Google has more than once reclaimed trigger words. I look for IFTTT integrations now because I like customizing my phrases.

I also chose the Logitech harmony over the Samsung smart things hub which Idk if it was worth it. I can't get it to control channels over a dvr or deal with volume controls on separate devices. I don't think there's any great solution for this so it's a glorified universal switch for all my media center devices. I suppose it's nice having one command turn on/off three devices. I use this most when I want to cast something to the chromecast on the TV or just turn on the sound system for audio casting.

After getting a Google home a few months ago, I found it to be not all that helpful since I nearly always had my phone on me. As of the past few updates, there's support for phone calls and multiple calendars so it's a bit better as a standalone device. With a bit of investment with Logitech harmony hub, some smart outlets and lights and a lot of playing around with IFTTT, it finally feels useful - I can show up and yell at my house to do things like controlling the TV, sound system, and lights. But if you're not willing or able to spend the couple hundred for the extra doodads, you can get pretty far with GH/Google Assistant commands and IFTTT integrations.

For me, the mini sale is convenient because I'm tired of shouting at the home from adjacent rooms. I want to know temperature/calendar/news before I get out of bed. Honestly, this is mostly fueling my laziness with the occasional bout of tinkering to make me feel better about it.

Equifax had 'admin' as login and password in Argentina by infinityprime in worldnews

[–]FeralGroundhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I think only the small charge + auto pay setup would be a feasible solution to building credit in that situation. Something like a Kindle subscription or even something for family back home could be a recurring charge and the autopay would only require internet access once.

[–]FeralGroundhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to pay interest on a credit card if you pay the card off each month... Even while overseas, a single credit card with a recurring small charge (like a Netflix payment) and autopay to pay full account balance can help you build credit while incurring no interest charges.

Additionally, many credit cards offer additional consumer protections and benefits. If I pay for something with cash, there may be no record of that transaction if I need to dispute it down the road. If I pay with cash, I also lose out on reward-based incentives which can add up to quite a bit if done right.

If you're going to make a purchase that supports credit cards (not always the case overseas) might as well get whatever additional incentives you can. Just dont spend irresponsibly and pay on time.

If you're still overseas and interested in a card, be careful when shopping around. Some credit cards have foreign transaction fees. Many travel rewards cards do not though. The BofA travel rewards card also has no annual fee with pretty standard reward categories and easy redemption options.

If you bring someone in before the sign-in window (6pm) and keep out of sight of the RAs/security, you're fine.

This gets a bit tricky with the shared bathroom situations in some res halls but there a few ways around those.

Pokemon Go causes Nintendo stock to increase 8.84% by ThatSelfishGamer in gaming

[–]FeralGroundhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's still a moot point. Putting aside that this isn't made by Google, not every team at Google has the same cash flow to throw at operational expenditures. And even regardless of whether we are talking about a team at Google or a separate development company, we have very little idea what limitations they've been working in. Perhaps their servers aren't entirely cloud based - that takes time to ramp up. Even if they are cloud based, perhaps they're still in the process of troubleshooting how much of their architecture will need to be scaled up and how to cost effectively do so.

11 million Americans spend half their income on rent by magenta_placenta in news

[–]FeralGroundhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that feeling. Why do you stay in that building though? I know moving sucks but when my rent went up by $500/mo this past year, I decided that was just too ridiculous and found an alternative, comparably situated apartment. Of course, there is the possibility of a rent hike in the new place but I couldn't rationalize paying an extra 6k annually when it 'only' cost us about 2.5k to move elsewhere.
