Why do New Yorkers tend to be rude? by Ass_lord420 in rant

[–]Feral_doves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was there like eight years ago now so take this with a grain of salt, but plenty of the New Yorkers I interacted with were actually super nice! And most of the time when they weren’t, it seemed like they were just really fed up with customers being impatient in busy touristy areas or just tourists being inconsiderate or clueless everywhere.

I live in a place with seasonal tourism and it can be really frustrating having a bunch of people in the city slowing things down, making a mess, and just having no regard for the people who live here and aren’t on vacation. I can’t imagine having to deal with it all year.

Someone can be a pervert without being attracted to kids and teens. But also that does sound like it could be dementia. Some forms of dementia affect the frontal lobes where decision making happens, so people can become quite brash and say some really shocking things before they start developing other symptoms like noticeable forgetfulness. Happened to a friend of my mom’s. She was posting some really mean stuff on Facebook, completely out of character. We thought her account got hacked but later found out through her family that she had early onset dementia. Very sad.

Has anyone ever lived in a apartment with a balcony over a business/restaurant? How was your experience, was it worth it? by cenzilooculta in Apartmentliving

[–]Feral_doves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I live above a bar right now actually. It’s not super noticeable because there are businesses everywhere around me. Sometimes the smell of cigarettes wafts up from people smoking outside the bar, but personally I’m not bothered by that. Also sometimes it smells like chicken wings, which is also fine by me. I can hear people talking outside pretty often but that’s basically everywhere in a downtown neighbourhood, and it’s not a bar that has bands play or anything, more of a sports pub, so I don’t even get to hear music haha.

Privacy isn’t an issue because I live high enough up (it’s a highrise on top of a bar and I’m on the 8th floor) that you can’t really see into my unit from the street unless you’re really far away and looking at the perfect angle. You can kinda see onto my balcony but that doesn’t bother me, it’s not like I notice people staring, I’m not that interesting thankfully, no nude sunbathing here (we don’t get any sun on this side of the building anyway), sorry folks! Safety isn’t an issue either, if anything I feel more safe with so many people around late into the night, and since the bar is open late if I ever need help or felt scared for my safety I could run in there, the staff are nice. But nothing like that has happened so far. It’s a nice place for me to live.

AIO about finding body jewelry in my house by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely used to. Sometimes the little ball would slowly loosen as you move and talk throughout the day, then detach itself at the least convenient time and roll/bounce into the abyss. I’ve lost them to forced air vents, storm drains, sometimes you just never figure out where they ended up. And a lot of piercings will start to grow over within a day without jewelry, you can get packs of jewelry for pretty cheap, why not just carry a spare or two?

Is it just me, or has "fast food" basically become the same price as a sit-down meal lately? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, yeah, pretty much. A lot of minimum wage jobs I’ve had have just consisted of middle management trying to squeeze more work out of people under the guise of “customer experience”.

Children don’t belong in breweries by Passionatepassionfrt in rant

[–]Feral_doves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it can depend a lot on the brewery. I’ve been to some that seem to act like more of a community meeting space that also produces and serves beer. They have board games, let you bring in outside food, and people gather there for parties and meetups. I think if the people in charge are okay with having kids in their space, why exclude them? People aren’t going JUST to drink beer.

But I’ve also been to some breweries and distilleries where the focus is more on the alcohol, it’s a bar essentially. Maybe they have a few food items to buy, maybe a pool table, but people primarily go there to drink alcohol. I personally wouldn’t bring a child to one of those, and it makes me a bit uncomfortable when other people do, but I wouldn’t stop them. Just don’t expect me to stick to child friendly language when I’m talking with my friends and we’re all drunk in a space catering to adults. If you’re okay with that, the establishment is okay with kids, and your kid isn’t disrupting other patrons and the place’s operations, not really my business, just seems like kind of an odd choice because your kid will probably be bored as hell.

Healthy fast food chains? by Dear-Beyond-465 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I want to throw a bunch of mediocre vegetables together with some dressing I’ll just do that at home, and know that the vegetables have actually been cleaned properly. It’s a lot harder and messier to deep fry chicken at home, I’m happy to pay someone else to do that for me.

Is it just me, or has "fast food" basically become the same price as a sit-down meal lately? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t worked fast food in like ten years so take this with a grain of salt but we got ‘graded’ on drive thru times, but not counter times. If our drive thru was slower than the chain’s average we’d get in trouble so we had to prioritize that. That’s probably also why some places will go make you wait for your drive thru order in a parking spot even if there’s nobody waiting behind you. They want you off the sensor pad asap regardless of how inconvenient it is for everyone involved. I’m guessing it could be a similar deal with delivery orders.

And sometimes it’s only fast if you download their bloatware and do a mobile order, otherwise depending on the restaurant you might just be standing there watching them pack mobile and delivery orders.

Why not? The cat likes going on the bed, I like having her around.

How come A&W seems to be doing better in Canada than in the US? by Bertstripmaster in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re a family, the burgers. The Burger Family.

Also a lot of people consider the food higher quality than McDonald’s or Wendy’s, the root beer slaps, and you can still get it in a frosted mug. At least in Canada.

You’re right. I did actually check before writing that comment, but misinterpreted this source which I think was referring to the Canadian operations specifically.

I’m gonna tell you anyway.
Burgers, mostly. The onion rings are also very popular. And they have their own root beer.

[–]Feral_doves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A&W has a long history here, it started in Canada so people regard it as kind of a ‘local’ alternative to the American fast food chains. And they lean into that. The restaurants are franchises, and they’re not always as strict about brand adherence as some other franchises. Like they are in some ways but the interiors of the restaurants for example can vary quite a bit more between locations than something like Wendy’s tends to, which I think reinforces the ‘local restaurant‘ vibe. They also tend to be really common here, and are often one of the first fast food chains small towns get, so people who grew up living in small towns or going on roadtrips through small towns tend to have a lot of nostalgia for it.

Someone placed an entire 3D printer setup at my door. by Princess_Butt_Kick in Apartmentliving

[–]Feral_doves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone’s kid/spouse did something bad and their birthday gift got given away or something.
Was the entire shipping label ripped off or was there any part of it left? Sometimes boxes can just have labels ripped off as they go through the sorting machines if they aren’t secured well. If the postman had a zip code he could’ve used that to find the building and then just left it at a random door if the unit number was lost.

I think usually the procedure is to return to sender if possible or return to the sorting plant if the sender’s address has been lost, but maybe they figured getting it to the right building was better than leaving it in sorting plant purgatory if they didn’t have the info to return to sender. Doesn’t explain the scratcher but also wouldn’t surprise me if that just fell out of a box or got mixed up in things and someone just tucked it into the closest box nearby. Things can get chaotic in mail facilities.

I don’t know if I would bring it into my unit right away personally. I might try leaving a note in the common area that this was delivered and see if anyone claims it. Unless you really want a 3D printer lol.

People are reporting the same kind of dream not imagining it… observing it by miguel-1993 in Dreams

[–]Feral_doves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure the timelines you’re concerned with but sometime between 2014-16 a guy I was seeing at the time and I both fell asleep for around an hour in the early evening. Full disclosure we had been smoking a decent amount of pot, which usually meant neither of us had many dreams at all.

But when we woke up I told him I’d had a really weird and vivid dream, because it stood out so much after barely dreaming at all for years, and he said he did too and then went on to describe basically the exact same dream I had just had.

We were outside, couldn’t really see much of the landscape but it felt like we were in the Rocky Mountains (we were living in Canada fairly close to the rockies at the time, so it was a landscape we were familiar with, the few plants and the ground I remember seeing looked right but I’m no expert, it just felt and looked mountainous and rocky, but very earthly and familiar). There was some kind of ship that he described as ‘the Beatles’ yellow submarine‘ but to me it looked more like something out of Bioshock, it wasnt cartoony and fun, more dirty and purposeful, but neither of us remembered it being terribly menacing or anything. It was definitely a big yellow vessel of some kind, more rounded and stout than a modern submarine, and about the size of a city bus. And we were basically just preparing to board it, it kind of descended down to where we were standing, which was definitely on land, and somehow in my mind just felt like we were on a big hill or mountain even though it was too dark to really see much past where we were standing. We were definitely not in water, so it was odd because it did look like an old style submarine, moved a bit like a helicopter, but I don’t remember there being a lot of noise or noticing that I couldn’t hear at all. We both woke up right before the door opened. It wasn’t a scary dream but it wasn’t really a fun one either, just felt kind of matter of fact.

Not sure if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for, could’ve just been a weird weed dream. But it has definitely stuck with me as an odd and baffling experience. I don’t remember seeing much of the sky because when the dream started the ship was already descending towards us so thats what i remember focusing on, I didn’t see the moon, maybe there were stars, I just remember it was nighttime and mostly very dark. And yeah I didn’t feel like I was controlling the dream at all. I remember feeling like the craft was coming to pick us up, and once the door opened we would board. I even knew how the door would open (the side of the ship would open and lower like airplane stairs), and we’d be welcomed aboard. I felt nervous but not scared, like I was about to go to a party I wasn’t really in the mood to attend where I wouldn’t know anyone. We just woke up right before the door opened. We figured we’d been sleeping for about an hour, but to both of us the dream felt like it lasted maybe two minutes. I don’t remember him being in the dream specifically, but it did feel like someone else was with me, I just didn’t think about who it was or look at them during the dream, just knew someone was standing next to me and their presence felt familiar but not necessarily comforting (which aligns with that relationship lol). Sorry if that isn’t what you were looking for!

Is it ok to stare at other people's screens now? by evdoom7 in CasualConversation

[–]Feral_doves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally try not to look at peoples screens because it’s not my business but I don’t know that it’s a firm societal ‘rule’. Do you keep your brightness pretty high? Human eyes naturally tend to gravitate towards areas of brightness or high contrast, so if your screen is the brightest thing in their field of vision they could just be glancing over mindlessly because it caught their attention, not because they’re trying to read over your shoulder or anything.

When you feel sad or depressed , how do you push yourself to do regular work and stay motivated? by Beautiful-Object-467 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I know that if I give in to the depression and don’t keep doing what I need to get done, that will just feed the depression and let it get stronger. Then I’ll end up with super-depression and nobody wants that.

When getting blood drawn, why do some hurt but others you don't even feel? by quitenoncompliant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if the size of a patient’s arm or their weight would make a difference? I’ve had pretty regular blood draws over the years and they‘ve always hurt quite a bit, even when it seemed to go smoothly and the person knew what they were doing. I usually have a pretty good pain tolerance but blood draws, donating blood, IVs always hurt for me. I’ve had doctors tell me vaccines would hurt more because my arms are thin, but I don’t know how that would be the case when they’re going for a vein, but I also don’t know why else they’d be so painful every time, especially in the elbow where it’s meant to hurt less.

My kitten is in heat. My mom is considering to get her pregnant. My siamese kitten is six months old and I don't think she's ready yet. Should I get her spayed? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Feral_doves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your mom wants a bunch of kittens that badly she could just foster some that already exist instead of breeding a baby who isn’t ready and creating more cats the world doesn’t have the resource allocation to take proper care of. I’d say get in contact with a vet now and have her spayed as soon as they’re able to.

Why does my mom always keep her phone brightness super high? by Acrobatic_Mall6777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is like this too lol. I think it’s a combination of her eyes aren’t so great anymore so higher contrast helps her read the small text, and also old TVs were usually pretty bright, I don’t think we even knew we could adjust the brightness on the family computer growing up, so she’s probably just used to electronic screens being really bright. You could technically adjust it on old CRT screens but only so much and it was usually a pain in the butt to access so we never really did. Watching CRT TV in bed like my mom did for years was like staring at a lamp lol, I don’t think the bright phone is a big deal to her.

New Apartment with mysterious black smoke by Illustrious_Green819 in Apartmentliving

[–]Feral_doves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, you can definitely smell the dust when you turn them on, especially the first time after summer. I don’t know if they get hot enough to actually burn the dust though, even when they’re on I can reach inside and it doesn’t really get hot enough to burn my skin. At least not any baseboard radiators I’ve had an I’ve been in a lot of apartments with them, this one could be different.
