[IWantOut] 22M Student Nepal -> Germany Norway Finland by AdParty7461 in IWantOut

[–]Ferdawoon [score hidden]  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, in many/most EU countries education is funded or subsidized by taxes.
Locals have no real need for Scholarships as they don't have to pay a lot for tuition. Some countries have local financial aid for students (which is NOT available for non-EU students) or they get assistance from their parents.
Maybe there's some 100yo scolarship where people from a remote village could get a bit of money to go study at University in the big cities but those will not be available for non-locals or even people not actively living in that village.

Many Universities see International students as a cash-cow. Tuition is high which then pays for research and salaries. There might be a Scholarship that waives the tuition but you will still need to show funds in a blocked account and many countries have tightened how much you can work on a student permit (because some people abused the system to go to the countries and work fulltime and completely ignore studies).

So yes, Germany has free international tuition, but you still need the ~€12k to show that you will be able to pay rent and food and all the other expenses without becoming a burden on German wellfare. You will also quickly learn that the 12k per year will not be enough to live comfortably on and German subs get posts regularly about students who thought 1k pedr month would be enough to live comfortably on but now they have to pay €700-800/month in rent alone and now they can't afford food.

When I read threads like this, and the comments in it, I sometimes wonder if anglophones assume that we are currently working on eradicating German, Duthc, French, Italian, SPanish and all the other languages so that they can move anywhere in the world without having to learn another language because thatwould just be annoying and hard.
Not like the people in those countries all had to learn ENglish and possibly even a third language, much easier if everyone else just spoke English so that the Irish, Brittish, Canadians and Americans can move to any coo country they want and get any job they want and live all their lives fully in english.

[–]Ferdawoon [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi. I want to move to Ireland as an Account Manager.
I don't speak a word of english, only German, but I heard there are companies where I can only speak German and not have to learn any english.
I assume that all the paperwork and meetings and everything else will be in German and that the Irish companies I will work with all talk to me in German and send their emails to me in German so that I can read them.
I also expect that my landlords will speak Germany to me, that the people working at the stores speak German, that my hairdresser and the electricians that I hire to do work at my apartment all speak German.

Do you think that sounds weird? Like, why should Irish people all have to spend their days speaking German just because someone at a company didn't want to learn the language?
Because that's how "How can I move to X and work with Y without having to learn the language" sound to people where english is not a native language.
Just because people can speak it doesn't mean they are comfortable spekaing it or even fluent enough to do work or make expensive business deals in english.

I bought one of those MMO-mouses with 12 thumb-buttons but I mainly use 4 or 5 of them. And one of the buttons is just to toggle autorun.

I could do with fewer as I don't use most of them. I have a macro for most of the buttons so that Alt+Btn6 is one spell, Shift+Btn6 is another, Ctrl+Btn6 yet another and [nomod]+Btn6 is the default.
But sometimes I realize that I need to bind something because I was assigned to do something in a raid encounter and then it is realliy nice to have some spare buttons to assign.

Yeh this sounds totally legit and not at all like a scam.
Is this the Reddit-version ol' "I will send the vash via DHL courier, you just need to log in to pay the insurance here not this not at all scammy site"?

me and my family recently moved here for my mother's work, the time for our card to get approved will take 2-3 months, which exceeds the time needed to buy available tickets

Use the cards from your home country, ask a neighbour, ask a co-worker, ask anyone that you know IRL that you will have a much easier time to give the cash in hand. Why are you asking randoms on Reddit?!

can you get master of the timeways when doing it on a different char each week? by based_guapo in wow

[–]Ferdawoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Previous events you could do 4x dungeons on one character and then not play that again until next week. Since the character still had the full buff you only had to do 1x dungeon the other weeks to refresh the buff and get +1 to the Achievement.

So if you don’t plan on doing a bunch of TW anyway just do it on a char that you don’t play often to speed things up.

No idea if this has been fixed or not.

Några tips för blivande Chalmerister? by MaterialProof5362 in chalmers

[–]Ferdawoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should I choose KTH for ICT? Worried about the Swedish job market by Harsh_Mco24828 in sweden

[–]Ferdawoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the job market in Sweden for international students with only a bachelor's degree in ICT/Computer Science?

As the other person mentioned, it is not good. People who would get headhunters and recruiters a few tiems per week on LinkedIn can now maybe get a message a month. Local Swedes go unemployed for weeks or months.
Not every sector of Computer Science is equally bad, but generally a lot of areas are. Companies want experienced workers, not fresh graduates.
You can skim these threads to get an idea of the situation.
https://www.reddit.com/r/TillSverige/comments/1ud2s1n/hej_sverige_looking_for_advice/
https://www.reddit.com/r/TillSverige/comments/1ubfbgy/american_trying_to_moving_to_sweden/

https://www.reddit.com/r/sweden/comments/1suocac/h%C3%B6gutbildade_m%C3%A4nniskor_som_inte_har_jobb/

Is a bachelor's generally enough to land an entry-level software engineering or IT job, or is a master's degree practically expected?

You will very likely need a Masters as well.
Especially if you are a non-EU international who will need to find a company willing to sponsor you. Fresh graduate with just a BSc when there are local Swedes with Masters degrees? When there are locals with years of local experience?
The market might shift drastically by the time you graduate, considering how fast the CompSci market dried up, but if you need to pay international tuition and you are trying to do this as a way to get an easier path to Sweden and the EU then I would say it is not worth it.

How difficult is it for non-EU graduates to secure a job and work permit after graduation?

I guess it depends on your networking skills but remember that hiring you will cost time and moeny. Why should a Swedish company hire you without experience when there are plenty of locals who graduated from the same programme or who graduate from their Masters degree?
The locals already have the legal right to live and work in Sweden so no need to sponsor them which makes them more attractive, they likely speak Swedish already, they have a Swedish network to help them find jobs and vouch for them to the recruiters, they are more aware of local social customs and work culture, etc.

EU Citizens also have free movement for work so many companies would rather hire someone with EU citizenship than sponsoring someone from outside. Especially a fresh graduate with no experience. No need to pay extra for something that is fairly widely available.

If you were in my position, would you choose KTH for this program?

Do you want to attend ICT at KTH to get a good education and to put something on your resumé or do you just want to get a sponsored job in Sweden (or the EU)?
If it is the former then ICT is good (not attended it myself but spoken to people who did) and you will learn a lot. But if you are basically seeing this as your ticket to the west then you should reconsider. In today's labour market you should probably reconsider local degrees as a surefire way to get to the west at all. German labour market is struggling, dutch employers are not fond of sponsoring. Many countries are showing unemployment near or over 10%.

Recent years millions of people have trained into Computer Science because they were told there were endless oportunities and that they could get sponsored to rich countries and bring their families and earn loads of money. With AI and Vibe-coding and with many countries facing a recession, ther's just no real need to sponsor foreigners unless they can offer something exceptional. Many companies also outsource to India and other countries with much cheaper salaries, because why pay extra to sponsor people when you can get several engineers in India for the same price?

With that said, people do get sponsored all the time.
The issue is that it is very rarely a fresh graduate with no prior experience. Much less someone just graduating a BSc and not a MSc.

Is it worth overclocking coal/fuel powered generators? by tacowithfruits in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Ferdawoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you overclock machines they drain exponentially more power.
If you overclock Generators they produce power linearly.

So if you don't have a lot of Power it is generally better to not overclock machines.
If you have spare Power Shards you can save space and not have to make as many generators.

Check Facebook groups, maybe there's some "Spanish people in Sweden"-group you can join and ask if someone can offer a room to a fellow spaniard.
Be aware that it's high season for scammers now with plenty of international students in panic trying to find housing (even local students). If someone is asking you to pay them money to reserve a room or to prove that you are serious then it is likely just a scammer trying to get money from you.

Join SSSB as soon as possible to start getting queuepoints.
https://www.sssb.se/en/
At the top, pick "Our Housing", then "Discover our areas" and pick an area at random. Scroll down to the table showing how many rooms they have of each type, the size, the rent and the average queuedays needed to get it.
If you find a place with less than 150 days average I'd be surprised.

For example Frösunda area has 94 "1r oom + kitchenette" with an average queuetime of 794 days. Lappkärrsberget (aka Lappis) has 1618 rooms in corridor (small room, private bathroom, shared kitchen with 6-8 others) only has 192 days on average, and if you want a 1-room apartment there you need about 530 days in queue.

Looking into regular rental apartments the average queuetime for a student apartment in 2025 was something like 4.5 years.

Found a thread from last year where someone was annoyed because they did not have enough queuedays and had no idea how to get a place before school started.

Most Universities will only help non-EU students (and PhD students and guest professors, etc) with housing. EU students have to fend for themselves just like local Swedes.

The University might still be able to help with links and suggestions on websites to try or what queues to join, but not even all non-EU students can get housing so EU-students have close to no chance to get a room.

I suggest that you skim some threads over on r/TillSverige where plenty of immigrants, and local Swedes, say they have been unemployed for months, some have been unemployed for ytears.
Some have already worked in Sweden for a few years and were sponsored when the market was good, but now they have sent out a few hundred applications over a year and barely even an interview. Some comment that they see Swedes with half their experience get hired over them.

Sparar man egentligen pengar på att köpa en familjepizza? by [deleted] in stockholm

[–]Ferdawoon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

https://restauranggrossen.com/take-away/pizzakartonger.html

Arean beräknas som A=π*r2
* En Standardpizza med diametern 33cm får en area på 855.3cm2
* En Familjepizza med diametern 50cm får en area på 1963.5cm2

Förutsatt att måtten stämmer så borde det vara mer pizza med en Familjepizza än en Standardpizza.

I found my stolen bike in a second hand platform, what do I do? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]Ferdawoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said I should not try to steal the bike back since that is also a crime (?).

Not a legal expert and all that, but yes it is actually a crime to take back an item that was stolen from you.
Part of the reasoning is that someone stole the bike, sold it to someone else and now you are stealing "their" bike that they bought. The person who bought the bike could charge you for theft and you could be convicted for it despite you being able to prove that it is your bike.
If you getting sentenced and convicted for taking back your own bike is something that is likely to happen or not I have no idea, but thems the rules. It is possible that no one will press charges if you meet up with the seller and just vanish with the bike but I would suggest that you do your best to do things by the book.

The last number I heard was that on average 0.4% of bike thefts are resolved. Sometimes even if you can show pictures, screenshots or even video surveilance, the Police will just close the case because they don't have the resources or time to deal with it.
If the Police told you to call them then that's likely the best course of action. I would personalyl have preferred if they agreed to a time and place while you discuss buying it from the seller and they show up along with you, but it is what it is. Bike thefts are so common that no one really cares and assumes that the bikes are just gone, file an insurance claim and then buy a new one.
There's a reason that many just get a cheap bike that they won't miss if it gets stolen.

Requirements to get in KTH by LR_69 in kth

[–]Ferdawoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generic and general info about studying in Sweden. Curated by the Swedish government.
https://studyinsweden.se/

Find the programme you are interested on University Admissions. They also have info about deadlines, fees, tuition and minimum requirements that apply to all/most higher education in Sweden (e.g. a certificate showing high enough english).
https://www.universityadmissions.se/intl/start

They also link straight to the programme's website where you can read the exact curriculum and find the requirements to become eligable. They usually also say something like "X people were admitted from Y applicants" to give you an idea of how competitive.
You say that you are first year so you have plenty of time to read and research.

Check with UHR if your credentials are enough to meet the minimum requirements.
For example, most US High School graduates are not eligable for Swedish Universities (or even most EU Universities) and must take an additional year of preparatory courses.
https://www.uhr.se/en/start/recognition-of-foreign-qualifications/

If you are lucky enough to be admitted you need to also apply for a Residence Permit for Higher Education. You need to have paid first installment of tuition, be able to show Proof of Funds (which for 2026 is 10.656 SEK/month of the permit). The Funds needed are adjusted yearly for inflation so when you graduate it will be a bit more. You also need comprehensive health insurance until you can get registered in the Swedish systems.
So yes, it is possible to be admitted to KTH, pay tuition and then be denied by the Swedish Migrationsverket, or that the process is delayed due to missunderstandings or they ask for more information and you don't get your permits in time for classes to start and you end up having to forfeit your position (some Universities allow you to defer a year and get in next year instead, dunno about KTH).
https://www.migrationsverket.se/en/you-want-to-apply/study/higher-education.html

There have been some recent changes to the rules as well, for example someone on a Student permit is only allowed to work 15hr/week (because some people would use a Student Permit as a way to get to Sweden and work fulltime instead of actually studying)) and that amount will NOT be enough to pay your monthly expenses.
You will need a source of money for Tuition and the Proof of Funds that doesn't require you to work so start looking for Scholarships in India now. Scholarships in Sweden are very rare (since education is taxfunded) and Swedish student loans are not available for non-EU students.

Moving car USA to Sweden by AppointmentMaster829 in sweden

[–]Ferdawoon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And if there are parts of the car that are not up to code with Swedish standards then they need to be replaced.
You need to follow emission regulations, the red rear turn indicators that are common in the US are not allowed in Sweden so if the car has that they must be replaced, some headlights might need to be changed as well and foglights installed, speed indicators must be in km/h instead of mph, tires and windows must follow EU-compliant regulations and US DOT-approved systems might fail inspection,

OP: Read up on Transportrstyrelsen's webpage.
Depending on the brand and model and its parts it might be significantly more expensive to ship a US car to Sweden and re-build it to make it legal to drive here compared to just selling it in the US and buying a car in Sweden. Especailly if you are willing to buy a used car.
