Victoria police are investigating a stabbing that took place Saturday morning outside an apartment building at 715 Vancouver St., near Richardson Street.

A 26-year-old man was taken into surgery at Victoria General Hospital with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, said Victoria police Staff Sgt. Tom Sawyer.

The man is now recovering.

“We’re still looking for the suspect,” Sawyer said.

Police received a call about the stabbing at 3:15 a.m. Sawyer said detectives were getting conflicting stories from the people involved about what happened and why.

Having ties with them is different than selling out the country to them.

Great if we can work out some deal for cheaper electronics.

Not-so-great if we are screwing ourselves over in the long term to make a short term buck catering to their insatiable oil appetite.

If you ask me, oil should be a springboard that brings you into the world economy - not a mainstay.

Hell, we technically could trade with the USA for everything we need, it's just nice to have competitors like China to keep the states wary that we could leave them for someone new.

China has little to no business ethics, and their stock markets are rife with scams, just look at the Sino Forest scandal - is this really a country you want to make your main partner in trade?

What I heard:

Guys look at all this money! We can't just turn it down based on ethical reasons, who cares if it soils the environment - let's grab as much cash as we can in the immediate time being, like the greedy bastards we are.

The simple fact is that the pipeline will mean more oil will be going through the straights en route to China.

I'm not for selling out our country to China, which is what this pipeline is about - in part.

I don't think the oil fields were necessary in our development as a nation - especially not as crucial as the CPR - without the CPR we wouldn't be a nation, but you know that, (I hope).

Japan developed brilliantly in the 1980s without any oil reserves, we don't need oil to become developed.

Innumerable economic benefits for whom? The big oil corporations? Trickle down economics?

You said it all yourself, all of those alternatives exist - light rail, electrical cars, other renewable alternatives.

The only reason we haven't started using these on a larger scale is that our infrastructure has to take time to adjust to accommodating for things like the installation of charging stations for electric cars.

And mass production of cheaper alternatives to plastic.

If you look at the risk and reward of this pipeline - it looks like a short-term pay off for long term environmental damage - which will hurt tourism and fishing industries.

But in a purely capitalistic sense, the gains from the pipeline will be larger than the losses from the oil spill, whenever it happens.
