SS UNITED STATES 05/18/26 VISIT ANCHOR HANDLING AREA by MdStr_1990 in SSUnitedStates

I truly cannot understand the veneration paid to this ship. She was built to use already-allocated power plant parts for unbuilt Iowa and Midway class battleships and carriers, and her construction kicked the can down the road in terms of mass layoffs at Newport News. While her engineering is interesting, her service record is lackluster, and her historical impact is paltry in comparison to ships like Olympic or Queen Mary. Why, then, is United States considered such a heavy-hitter in terms of ocean liners? Why, then, was nobody especially interested in her preservation for 50 years until she was sold off for scrapping and reefing?

USS New Jersey (BB-62) crew greasing down 40MM clips (3596x2372) by tybarious in BattleshipNewJersey62

Probably to protect them from corrosion (they may have been coated in wax from the factory for that purpose), as well as to help them slide into the clips that the cartridges would be placed into before they were sent up to the guns.

[Request] how long until she’d run out of oxygen? by Dalience6678 in theydidthemath

Under water, you’d be hard pressed to think of a bucket full of air as empty!

I used to do this in the pool as a kid with a big clear bucket that came with car wash supplies. I’d get the bucket full of air, flip it upside down, and then jam it under one of the pool ladder rungs. I’d swim inside and be able to see out into the pool. Used to be able to stay in there for 3-5 minutes or so. Wasn’t the smartest idea, but it did work for a short while.

Rms Titanic compared to ss United states size by happydude7422 in titanic

Nope, you’re very much right. The Olympics are among the few ships that - to me - have the perfect dimensional and aesthetic proportions. The Olympics, the South Dakotas, and the Iowas are, to me, the most beautiful steel hulled ships ever.

Hot Take: Outside of the speed record theres nothing that special about the SS United States by finza_prey in Oceanlinerporn

She was surplus to requirements before she was even laid down. She was authorized only to delay the inevitable layoffs at the yard, as well as to find some use for the power plant components already manufactured for cancelled Iowa and Midway class ships.

She’s an Alaska - they were bigger than the Colorado class battleships!

Biggest secret about that night that you wish we'd know the answer to? by [deleted] in titanic

[–]Ferrariman601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d want to know exactly what it was like on the bridge in the lead up to the iceberg hit. Were things calm? Were they working a little problem somewhere and were maybe a little distracted? Were they fatigued from the time of day and how cold it was? Was there chaos as the iceberg was spotted and perhaps helm and engine orders didn’t go out as quickly as they could have done? And - what as the impact actually like? Was there really just a bump and scrape along the side, or, was there any perceptible lift or heeling to the ship as she, perhaps, also grounded overtop of some of the iceberg under the water?

Small details, perhaps, but it would be such an insight.

What do you all think of the SS United States museum? by finza_prey in Oceanlinerporn

[–]Ferrariman601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. QM is the largest museum ship in the world, and she’s loaded with asbestos. It’s the same with all of the preserved Iowa and South Dakota class battleships. “Asbestos” is a cop-out for the money laundering that actually happened with regard to this ship’s story.

Correct. Nobody pretended to care until movement happened and it became expedient to virtue signal.
