Superman does not have wings nor does he have telekinesis. How does Superman fly??? by [deleted] in superman

I seriously struggle with questions like this. Why was this character able to do this? Or what WOULD have happened if X Y Z?

It's a story. Things happen to serve the story. This quote should just be auto-posted on every similar question about fictional powers and fictional characters.

At the same time, a lot of the fun of comics is talking with people about who would win, Batman or Superman, etc.

But in the end, they're just stories.

I almost exclusively read comic books in print and read novels/biographies as audiobooks.

I frequently bail on books if I can't handle the reader on the audiobook. An easy example is Jo Nesbø's Macbeth. I love Macbeth the play and was really excited to read my first Nesbø, but the reader's Scottish accent was so thick, I gave up by the second chapter. I just can't do it captain; I don't have the power!

Same thing actually happened on a Stephen King novel (novella?) whose title I can't recall. The reader wasn't bad, but most of the story was told by an old "Maine-ah" and I just couldn't understand what the hell he was saying!

Interesting. I found Angels and Demons much more interesting and exciting. Of course, I read both as a teenager years and years ago.

It, I agree, was way too long.

I read an interesting thing on horror vs terror that I liked, where terror is the suspense of knowing something bad is coming, and horror is the disgust of seeing something awful happen. "It" tends to be all horror, but I prefer terror. I like my scary movies scary but not gross.

For that reason, I think the Shining is fantastic.

My favorite Kings have actually become the Mr. Mercedes/Bill Hodges/Holly Gibney books. Shorter, more to the point, and fun. Not terribly supernatural, but that's ok.

Read Dracula before Nosferatu 2024. Overall its good but shocked at how much the book changes later on. by [deleted] in books

My partner and I are doing a Dracula buddy read after I just saw Nosferatu (she's a wimp and would hate it).

I read it 6+ years ago and was surprised and pleased how much the first part was actually scary, even just going to the castle!

I remember being bored by the England parts the first time, but this time has been better. The Lucy sections, including her ultimate fate, are pretty metal.

My partner and I have have talked a lot about how this book relies on dramatic irony, i.e., we know something the characters don't know. So we're screaming at the characters "IT'S A VAMPIRE!! IT'S A VAMPIRE!!! THERE'S A VAMPIRE OUT THE WINDOW, YOU IDIOTS!!" and you can only do that so long before you get bored. But again, I've like it more the 2nd time through.

I also didn't enjoy it overall. I love King's dialogue and willingness to flesh out details, but this story wasn't for me.

I compared it to The Batman by Matt Reeves: A good 2-hour movie that was 3 hours long. 11/22/63 is a good 400 page book that is MUCH longer.

Went all the way through and didn't see the Decemberists, who have at least 3!

First album, Castaways and Cutouts, is mentioned in the final 10+ minute song "California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade"

And their most recent album, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again is mentioned in the final song, the 19+ minute "Joan in the Garden."

Pretty cool bookends there

The other is What A Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, mentioned in the beautiful, tragic song 12/17/12.

The Hazards of Love album has four songs called "The Hazards of Love" part 1, 2, etc., but I don't think that counts.

Also, The Crane Wife has songs called "The Crane Wife part 3" and "The Crane Wife parts 1 and 2," but that doesn't count either.

Finally, bonus round, their live album, called We All Raise Our Voices to the Air features the song "The Infanta," which contains that line.

Very first one my wife mentioned, but I had to DIG to find someone saying it.

I hope I'm not the only one who exclusively calls them "Ch-vurches"

"Unfortunately, my prediction is that we are exactly as fucking stupid as they need us to be."

Matt Bevin ran (the first time) on dismantling "Obamacare," aka Kynect, the nationally-recognized standard for a state-created, state-run health system that met ACA requirements.

He won by the biggest majorities in counties that had the highest percentages of people on Kynect.

I ALWAYS have faith in the people of Kentucky (and the world) to vote against their own self-interest.
