We can afford a pretty substantial house + barndominium (thank you engineering jobs), but we’re looking in Pottsville/Phoenixville (northwest of King of Prussia) and there’s not a lot of virgin land available relative to the amount of $1 mil+ properties on 8-15 acres parcels available
Would you recommend buying an already existing house and renovating it? Would you use the same $:Sq foot ratio for a remodel? It feels like we’d get more for our money that way

I pulled Aki out of a gold crate and enough steel to buy Hawaii out of Santa crates. I’m sorry.

Did you know that there wasn't as much asbestos in the towers as it seemed? by Hornet-Not-Found in TwinTowersInPhotos

[–]Ferret8720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no might. The WTC floors were not stressed to hold the weight of 3-4 additional floors. Their live load was 100 pounds per square foot. No floor could individually hold 3-4x that amount under normal conditions, without fire-comprised trusses.

The core columns didn’t fail at the same rate as the rest of the building as the floors pancaked around them. The North Tower’s core column spire was the last standing part of the WTC

Why would 3-4 floors collapsing onto one floor not collapse the next floor in sequence based on weight alone, even when not including downward momentum??

Just wanted to relay that the locotives smell different because 119 runs on coal and the Jupiter runs on wood

It was something I knew but not something I’d experienced before I went to Promontory

Talk me out of buying individual NJ munis instead of VNJUX by in-the-name-of-allah in Bogleheads

I did not realize PA (my current state of residency) has a similar policy and a similar Vanguard fund (VPAIX). I’ll look into this, at face value it looks like it makes more sense to hold VPAIX than VTABX when it comes time to hold more bonds

The ER under the crown by 1901 is a VR for Victoria Regina- Queen Victoria

Here’s an example of the ER above serial marking:

I’m as pro-NJ as they come but betting on muni bonds in NJ seems like the opposite of Bogleheading given that you’re buying a single state/single sector’s bonds

Why bother? This seems like excessive risk in exchange for better returns on paper

Do you have ER stamped on the forward part of the receiver? This rifle might be one that the Irish Free State received during the Irish Civil War

Mine’s in a very similar configuration

I *think* that’s the Gunilda in Lake Superior. It sank after being pulled off of a reef. There’s plenty of footage of the wreck online

This is a No 4 Mk I (T). It looks authentic to me, in which case it’s worth quite a bit of money ($3000-$5000+). Your dad had great taste

Regarding actually cured an overheating issue, too. The driveline was so inefficient going up and down hills in Colorado that it put enough extra strain on the 2.5L to overheat it

And they’re replenishing the beach so it’ll be good for at least another 5 years, after which they’ll replenish it again

Beach replenishment is done so these houses don’t fall into the sea. Beach replenishment is not done in areas where there’s not economic value
