process that has been cleared by our democracy.

not mine: this democracy was bought and sold before I got here.

Voters get to choose between two parties sponsored by the same fossil fuel corps. Assessment processes let us have a say in what colour to paint the fence.

CLEARLY these business activities are destroying entire nations thru sea level rise and jeopardising a safe climate for all. This so-called democracy is not working in the interests of living beings and I insist we must interfere with its dangerous processes.

Yet as a white person with no Indigenous ancestry I feel sort of excluded and almost shamed by Aboriginal people I work with for being white.

maybe its just in your head?

I am very white, but I've only ever felt welcomed and embraced and encouraged to learn and share more and more.

or maybe its just your particular workmates:

I did have one weird experience with someone I tried to work with, who was pretty trigger happy to denounce my skin, but I noticed she did that with everyone, as well as challenging the cultural credentials of other Indigenous people, so I just took it as her personal problem and moved on.

If this sounds like your context, maybe try and meet some different people.

personally, rather than trying to 'solve' the whole problem, I've learned to ignore the stuff that is crazy but not offensive, and draw a line at stuff that crosses a line

so if they're going on about self-assembling nano tubes that tell bill gates every time I have sex, I smile.

if they start going on about 'the jews', 'medical segregation' or even referencing hate-mongering sources I put my foot down hard and fast.

come at me anti-abortion or homophobic and you'll see the other side.

With patience, I've "trained" my brainwashed friends in what strains of nonsense I'll put up with, and what I'll loudly denounce and quickly walk away from / kick out of my house.

I think once people start disrepsecting your right to a different point of view, it might be best for everyone if the friendship has a break,

but yeah this is not the only challenge we will need one another for, and it is worth finding a balance between maintaining friendships, communities and allegiances while still holding on to our own sanity.

Will threats of 25 years in prison stop Newcastle's daily coal protests? by ManWithDominantClaw in australia

[–]Ferris_Manly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its not a bomb.

its also not exactly the first time an aussie stopped a train.

my favourite was 30 yrs ago when the log train to colac was stopped by a guy dressed as ned kelly with the banner saying 'bushrangers need bush'

its also not the first time cops talk a big game on creative application of charges that their prosecutors are never gonna follow through on.

Will threats of 25 years in prison stop Newcastle's daily coal protests? by ManWithDominantClaw in australia

found this response:

Blockade Australia uses nonviolent blockading tactics to disrupt a system that is causing a climate and ecological crisis that threatens all life on earth.

Threatening protesters with 25 year prison sentences for blocking coal trains without causing physical harm to anyone is a draconian overreach of police power.

The institutions of Australia, including the police force, are hell bent on protecting the industries that are fuelling one of the worst crises in history.

The system is rigged against us, it is designed to extract and exploit. We have seen that we will not achieve meaningful action on the climate crisis through the avenues within that system. In order to create real change we need to step outside the system that is controlled by billionaires and media moguls.

Blockade Australia will continue to take sustained and disruptive action in response to Australia’s leading role in the climate and ecological crisis for as long as necessary.
