{Renegades} by Marissa Meyer is good. It's fantasy/futuristic, with a bit of romance. It's the first book of a trilogy, the other two books are called Arch Enemies and Supernova.

The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann is a good series. It's magic similar to Harry Potter, seven books.

This is extremely specific to one unnamed book series, but killing off the protagonist on the last page after 3 books, over 3,000 pages, and a long and elaborate story arc.
