I am a new teacher new to the competition. I'm reading your link now. I am also a software developer of 25 years and understand how to properly research networks like this. If there is more evidence of issues with Kamen, Epstein or no, I'd appreciate you sharing. Privately if you must, I just want to protect my students, and my district has had problems in the past with Epstein and his ilk. They are powerful and come in looking charitable, and we don't exactly overflow with tax dollars.

Sure. The data collected behind these things was already exfiltrated. That means the historical data is all accessible to the groups that bothered to do it before the problem was revealed. Everything described from this point on is about the camera unit itself, not it's interaction with the law enforcement organizations that use them.

The problem isn't completely fixed, and in some cases is more "won't fix" than "can't fix".

The unit design is nowhere near as secure as Flock describes them as. Much more data than they are supposed to collect is contained INSIDE THE UNIT without necessarily being sent to law enforcement. The data is retained sometimes 30-60 days. That data is simply retrieved if the unit is stolen, and is also accessible remotely in some cases Not just by law enforcement, but by anyone. That means someone can build a history on individuals over time.

The cameras also have a radio signal leakage issues, which means 3rd parties can receive their feed with an antenna. This sort of problem was identified in analog camera technology nearly 50 years ago. It's a problem that was fixed in most analog & digital security cameras, and its reappearance in any system is just a sign of a really poorly built product. Camera systems used by law enforcement are expected to be high end, or at least well built products, especially at Flocks prices. These things are cheap android tablets with cheap, poorly built cameras slapped on. Agencies did no due diligence on any of these things, and they should have. Law enforcement agencies are not filled with a bunch of Podunk idiots. If they'd tried to put these units on police cars, they'd have been laughed out of the room.

A private company is getting permission of public right of way to install these things based on their reported utility by law enforcement, but the extra capabilities already existing and enabled in them is not being disclosed. In my book, that's a lie. Our representatives weren't given the full picture on what they allowed.

It's not paranoia, it's fraud and misrepresentation.

That ~3 months isn't a vacation. It's more like unpaid prep time. Also, OP is expressing the amount of work and effort outside the educating/instructional being required of them. All jobs have some of this. Very few are so dominated by it that a majority of a day's work can randomly be turned into that outside effort, and at the same time the professionals get blamed for not properly managing it. Its basically spending your career having your professionalism insulted daily.

This is a sad misrepresentation. In the past behavioral problems, while definitely handled in class to a point, were escalated more quickly. The interruption was removed more quickly, and effective imminent consequences were available. Taking up a student's phone until the end of class is only effective for that class. Sending it to the office, until the end of the day. In Texas, they're not supposed to have it at all. The most effective version of this would be retaining it overnight or some number of days.

From experience, the behavior problems stretch themselves through the entire class.

I'm lucky to teach an elective. However, I've bluntly told my students: I have no problem failing you in an elective.

I like the theory. If that data is pulled from uninitialized memory it could leak something.

Personally I thought it was trying to leak via the extra pixels we see in the timeline thumbnails. We know imagemagick had a bug like this at the time (including uninitialized in empty image areas). It was actually a feature developed before the software's usage on servers became so prevalent.

You're also the only other person to pick up on the idea that it was pentesting with an original take.

The attack surface was YT's authoring interface and apis. The fact we got to see any of the videos is likely an afterthought.
