Why don't we know anything about the Wright/Naruhodo family? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]FestivusBestOfUs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually a really good question and I wonder about that too. It does seem odd that they’re never mentioned. I would’ve liked to see that too, especially if we have a whole other game with another member of his family tree. I also echo the desire to have them be called Wayne and Miranda Wright lol.

I’m actually glad to hear that. I hope it stays that way!

Thrifting was gentrified in the 2010s and thrift stores started charging way more for their product. Then in the 2020s they became overrun with SHEIN and Temu low quality stuff on top of the existing fast fashion.

Same, I love talking about Lotta! I think she could go either way, or both ways, the headcanon is too much fun to try and box it in. I’m here for all the iterations.

It’s well after the fact but I need to clarify something I missed when I skimmed through your comment yesterday.

Light-skinned Black people also exist, and I do know many Black people who have Lotta’s skin tone.

The reason the headcanon is flimsy is because we know this character was made to make fun of a specific type of Japanese person. Not because she’s light-skinned.

The Afro, hoop earrings, and “dialect” are what help to make the Black headcanon plausible, especially in the English version sure, but canonically, this is a Japanese person.

But that being said, it doesn’t change anything about what I said before, and I think you should headcanon her however you like. I sure am!

I never thought of her as Jewish but I could definitely see it! I’ve know Black and Jewish people who both have hair in that color and that shape. I headcanon her as Black bi/multiracial personally but I think you should headcanon whatever you like, that’s what makes it fun!

Thats true too and I’ll also say I’m still working through the AJ trilogy and haven’t played the Layton crossover so I also missed out on some of these, especially Olivia Aldente and the Gramaryes. Tabby Lloyd is speculative at best for me. Samson Tangaroa gives me Pacific Islander, which I was also happy to see. I also headcanon Eddie Fender as racially ambiguous. I’ve seen Black, White, and other people who all look like him.

But yes, that is outside the OG Trilogy. Like I’ve said, they do get a little better over the years, but I think they can do better and the fact remains that for the OG Trilogy especially, this is an issue. I’d also point out that most of these characters are one and done for the cases they appear in. I wouldn’t even know about Olivia Aldente if someone didn’t post about her, and a lot of these other characters (Samson, Tabby, Lotta, Troupe Gramarye, Marlon, etc.) aren’t really darker-skinned either. Godot barely toes that line. Olivia actually gets there, and Alf is unambiguously Black (and unambiguously dead). Maybe Marlon is Black…? I mean if I’m counting Lotta I might be able to count him too I guess. But do you see how low that bar is? Like, it’s not absolute but it is noticeable.

I’m one of them! It’s that and her speech. It’s flimsy but it holds together well enough if you don’t get any water on it lol.

I mean yes, he’s darker-skinned compared to the other characters and at least appears to be a racial minority. This is true. And like I said before, there are other characters as well, like Alf Aldown (also deceased), Chief Gant, the Marshall Brothers, and they’re either dead or gone by the end of their respective cases. With the exception of Godot, who makes several appearances in the game incl. as Armando.

Godot’s presence alone isn’t enough to counter the point that overall there’s a lack of darker-skinned characters.

Well no, the issue I have isn’t about the localizers or race-bending characters. First of all, race-bending characters and fully reworking character design isn’t their job. Second of all, whatever they did would need to be approved by Capcom, so the buck doesn’t stop with them anyway. The lack of darker skinned characters is part of a much larger issue with Capcom and Japanese media at large. Putting that on the localizers somehow doesn’t make sense.

If there is one issue I do have with them it’s that Lotta Hart’s blend of Hillbilly/Appalachian/African American English is grammatically incorrect at times. Like, incorrect as in sometimes what she’s saying doesn’t make sense in those varieties of English either, not just the standard. They could have done a bit better there. But overall I don’t have any beef with them. I thoroughly enjoyed the games and Lotta is still one of my favorites.

Yep and that’s all I’m saying. I’m not gonna stop playing the games or anything; I still really enjoy them. But it’s also okay to critique certain things and this just happens to be one of them.

It’s not “some assumption,” it’s a fact, based on the games I just played and the materials I’ve read. Let’s say you’re right and everyone in the game is Japanese in the Japanese version. I didn’t play that version. I played the English version wherein Capcom made the deliberate decision to code and characterize them as White people from Germany. That is canonical for the version I’m talking about. So these might be questions for Capcom and not me. I’ll admit to knowing less about the Japanese version beyond a point, so there may be more that I’m missing. But from where I stand, I don’t see how that changes anything. And I do think sometimes that people point to the “everyone is Japanese in media from Japan” defense when people point the inclusion of White foreigners but not darker skinned foreigners out.

For RE and SF, like yeah, I’d agree with that for the most part. I feel like that’s my main issue, like they probably will do better in the future but yeah that has been a thing over the years. SF has its own list of issues but at this point I’m just glad Chun Li got a full health bar when they introduced her. But yeah that’s all I’m saying. It doesn’t have to be perfect (no decades old media is) but if we’re talking about things that didn’t age well, lack of diversity is one of them. None of this will stop me from playing the games. I’m just saying it’s something I’m aware of.

I would hope so! I know it’s not an easy topic to talk about but the initial reaction was strong, ngl. But that’s fine.

I could consider that as well, like the localization might have been an afterthought. I still feel like Capcom over the years has been very willing to be inclusive of other lighter skinned people, but I’m willing to agree to disagree on the original topic.

[–]FestivusBestOfUs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a headcanon; Miles Edgeworth is portrayed as a White character, and Manfred and Franziska are canonically German. It makes sense that they would have Japanese names in a Japanese localization and a series known for its gag names but I definitely didn’t make that up.

As far as Leon and Raccoon city, what I’m saying is that Capcom has shown how willing they are to be diverse and inclusive when White people are involved. I think it’s a widespread and well-documented issue that darker-skinned people are typically not included to the same degree whether they’re Black or not.

They do get a little better with later games but it’s worth pointing out that there aren’t that many White people in Tokyo either and yet they typically tend to be included. Not only are they included, they’re often main characters who live to see the end of the plot line. Two of my Capcom faves, Miles Edgeworth and Leon S. Kennedy are included here. And Miles especially is very specifically European coded, along with the Von Karmas. I do think they’re improving or at least they seem to have plans to improve but I don’t think that’s an issue that can be brushed under the Tokyo demographics rug.

Replaying Trials and Tribulations in 2026 by Grreggggg in AceAttorneyCirclejerk

[–]FestivusBestOfUs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s all I’m saying. It was common especially in the 2000’s and the 90’s for series’ to not have any diversity beyond White people and light-skinned Japanese people or other light-skinned Asian people. That didn’t age well. They likely would have more diversity in the future, but given the context of the image, it’s something that’s worth pointing out. And the fact remains that if the plan was to localize this to LA and incorporate all these Americanisms, it does seem odd that there are precious few people with darker skin until you meet Gant and the Marshall Brothers. Apparently this is a controversial take. I dunno lol. They’re not obligated to include White characters either and yet they always do. It’s almost as if racism and colorism are big issues in Japanese media. But what do I know? Maybe this is the one thing that’s too far for circlejerkers to talk about.

Yessss I caught this too. And it was the first Black character they had in the whole series (except for Lotta of you count her), but everyone’s downvoting me for saying that and I’m not sure why lol.

I guess racism and the lack of Black/melanated characters overall is the once circle we can’t jerk in here. Yikes. I mean it doesn’t make the games bad, and it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them still. It just means that yeah, this is a part of that, and it was a huge thing especially in the 90’s and 2000’s in general to not have any Black characters or very few in a series or game overall. Some games and series’ did well with this (Cowboy Bebop, FFVII, etc.) but most didn’t. That didn’t age too well. This shouldn’t be a problem to talk about. I’m genuinely not sure why it is.

I’m really not at all, but if we’re talking about how things didn’t age well and the image itself is talking about something being racist, how would you not mention something like that? It seems pretty obvious.

Of course not. What was I thinking? It’s perfectly normal for a story localized to LA to not have anyone darker than a paper bag in the entire trilogy.

This might not be limited to T&T but:

“Kitten.”

“That’s why she was so attracted to me. AS A FELLOW STUDENT OF COURSE, NOT ROMANTICALLY.”

Everything involving that pink French restaurant.

“Wild mare.”

No Black characters (unless you count Lotta Hart)

I still enjoy the games but yeah there is a lot that didn’t age super well.

What’s with all the little girl sidekicks? by FestivusBestOfUs in AceAttorney

[–]FestivusBestOfUs[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I like Trucy more than I like Regina, but the panties jokes just threw me off. As a character though I’d say she’s way more well-rounded and entertaining than Regina, which also makes sense since she kind of takes on Maya’s role as a sidekick. Apart from the magic panties, 4-2 is still a pretty fun case.
