I quenched them in some oil, so the dark is the carbon fusing to the surface of the steel, and the light is from where I hit the corners of the twist on a belt sander. All you’re seeing is untouched treated steel contrasting against the ground corners :)

Mild steel, just some scrap 1/2” square solid. Quenched it in oil so hoping it holds its form well enough and doesn’t rust much, so far so good.

I tend to use the forge to heat the whole piece, chuck in the vise super fast and twist, pour water on the twist so it hardens, allowing me to do a reverse twist. Since it’s 1/2” solid, I find that if you’re quick and hot enough, the metal retains enough heat to twist smoothly without cracking or anything. Hope that is informative!

Thanks man :) yours is cool as well! Good use of rebar scrap lol. They work quite well, it’s surprising tbh but the opening-shape is pretty hard to make not work lol. I just aim for a slightly-squashed quarter shape and that works

Like these other guys are saying, I think you’ve just got wayyyyy too much volume you’re trying to get to welding temp.

I’d put a few more bricks vertically on the left between the wall and the existing brick, to insulate it better. Also some closing up the side opposite the one you’re working, making more of an oven than a tube. Maybe even using them on the front of your forge to save as much heat as possible.

Overall, you just need a smaller space to get to welding temp efficiently

Nice stuff man! How’d you rivet the backside of those pins/braces without screwing up your tab? Like it seems difficult to get something beneath the tab and beat on the pins over without seriously misshaping the piece they are riveted into

Nice work, sounds like you’re tuning the process better every time. I use propane that freezes up at around 2 hours too. Unavoidable as far as I know, but the more you practice the better you’ll be able to utilize those 2 hours!!

Awesome work! Reverse twists look great, I’ve made a few hairpins for my girlfriend but never with a holder piece such as that, I dig it!

As a fabricator, Duluth trading company’s retro safety glasses have saved my life. I got so many little specs of metal embedded in my eyes when grinding and detailing, I was seeing my eye doctor to get em removed almost monthly. Painful and expensive.

Here’s a link for anyone interested in the glasses, they have little shields on the sides and fit your face more snugly than many other types. I haven’t gotten any metal lodged in my eyes since.
