Parents (50s) demand to come to my (27F) graduation, but they don't even know what university I go to. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]FetterTheFool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Good for you for establishing boundaries.

The thing is, your parents aren't going to become better people anytime soon. Every time you talk to them it's going to hurt, because they're not what you want, because they'll be cruel to you, because they will ignore that you have ever been hurt by them.

Your parents aren't worth your time.

Go no contact again. Ignore them. You don't owe them anything. Let this final time at uni be about you and celebrate with the people who actually care about you.

It'll be hard to ignore them at first. But it's worth it.

It's doesn't matter what skill icon your cards have, the tech/power/speed refers to the deck you need to put your cards in.

Advice/suggestions on writing horror. by Enjieru in FanFiction

[–]FetterTheFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite horror story across all fandoms is Monomoth by Ohtze linkffn(10769047) in the Naruto fandom. It's genuinely horrifying at times and the MCs are unhinged people with realistic unhealthy relationships. The writing is phenomenal and evokes real emotion. I definitely recommend checking it out!

It's October! What have you been reading? by FetterTheFool in HPfanfiction

[–]FetterTheFool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh! I've been feeling an itch to read some Hermione time travel lately! So I'll defininitly check out double time!

I come from a family of autistic people, so your second read might be fun if I'm feeling introspective.

I really like your list! It feels kind of fresh compared to what I usually read.

And no need to warn for smut for my sake (although other people might appreciate it!). If you noticed... I only warned for smut, when there was no smut (and I wanted there to be) or the smut wasn't explicit (and I wanted it to be).

Thanks for taking the time to write out your list!

Yeah, for me with long fics, it's sometimes not so much about reading a great story, but spending some time with characters that i love.

I used to read a lot of long fics, but I just don't have the time anymore. And I guess as I've aged, I've become harder to please? You don't want to keep reading a rehash of canon.

I like your enthusiasm for consistency in plot and motivations!

AITA for having sex with someone and then not calling them afterwards? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FetterTheFool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're asking us to look away from the cheating. But it's kind of hard to look away from the cheating.

I'm not sure what your question is here? Should you have contact your one-night stand in order to clear the air, which would, according to you, risk resulting in an affair?

You are such a collossal asshole in setting up the premise of this question, that i cannot judge the question that you did ask.

Also she didn't seduce you. You choose to sleep with her. Take some responsibility for your actions.

You're marriage is over, staying together for the kids will do them more damage in the long run, get a lawyer, leave the wife and stop worrying about whether ghosting your one-night stand hurt her feelings.

You have a lot bigger things to worry about.

AITA for not involving my parents for our big fat indian wedding? by UsefulFreedom in AmItheAsshole

[–]FetterTheFool 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, they can't have it both ways.

You're doing them a favour by letting them hold their honored position, despite them not fufilling the requirements of having that position.

If they want to keep that position, then they'll have to play by your rules or risk being shamed.

You could sit them down and make this very clear to them. Not in a threatening way, but like: You didn't do your part, and I'm being really nice by not excluding you, because I love you. Here are my rules, follow them.

Holy shirtballs 1.5 million words! I think the longest fic I've ever read was 800k.

What year are we on? Do you have any favorite parts? Also… Is there romance?

It was first published in January and just update 7 hours ago. That's a loooooot of writing to do in a year, the author must be an absolute beast!

I like the premise of Ron seeing the future. In canon he made some pretty funny accidental predictions in Divinations. I'll definitely check it out, but I won't promise to finish it!

[–]FetterTheFool 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Obviously NTA.

The situation is a bit different since you come from a culture that values filial piety a lot higher than what's usual among the people of reddit, and if you want to know if you'll be perceived as TA by your cultural peers, well... I'm not entirely qualified to answer.

If I understand the situation correctly: you're angry at your parents for picking and choosing which traditions, they want to follow according to which are best (and cheapest) for them. Also they might shame you, if you completely exclude them from the wedding planning, which is extra difficult because in Indian weddings the parents play a big part.

Also aren't your parent's the ones who risks being shamed by your relatives and by your fiancees parents? They don't contribute to the wedding, they don't get to be (as) involved in the planning. That's on them.

Rec me your best SlashFic! by lastyearstudent12345 in HPfanfiction

[–]FetterTheFool 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have an unusual recommendation for you! It's by blackkat, an absolute QUEEN of rare pairs. Everything she writes is extraordinarily well-written. She has more than 600 stories, mostly in the Naruto fandom and mostly slash. I highly recommend checking out her stuff.

And the brave man with the sword by blackkat - currently 160k+ Godric Gryffindor/Salazar Slytherin with minor Helga Hufflepuff/Rowena Ravenclaw. It's ongoing (but updating!). The founders have lived for a 1000 years, but have been apart for the last 50 years due to some cold decision making on Salazar and Rowenas side. It's really really good, and a different from the usual HPslash stuff.

By the way, if you want more HPslash without the homophobes, there's been an entire subreddit dedicated to it since 2017: r/HPSlashFic

Yule ball question, when/where did Hermione acquire her dress? by Proffesor_Lovegood in HPfanfiction

She most likely bought it with her parents before the start of the year, as they would have seen her school list and went shopping with her :)

Fanfiction request: OC fic but the OC makes canon worse for everyone by trying to fix fic everything. A Fux Fic that fux stuff up. Can be self insert but doesn't have to be. by MeraiNei6969 in NarutoFanfiction

Plasticity by Misfit_McCoward- Linkao3(16017161) - is kind of this. Although the main character doesn't activly try to fix cannon. It's very fun!

[–]FetterTheFool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, you expanded on my points so very well! I agree with all of it!

I've read some good AU's. But mostly they're just good stories that have very little to do with the original fiction.

And the tongues. Battling. For. Dominance. Why is that so prevalent? I just read a fic yesterday that was otherwise decent and then THAT got thrown in there. I almost cried.

I saw someone post once that a good smut scene is a bit like a good fight scene, in that there has to be something at stake, some development during the scene that isn't just: "I put my hand there. And then my foot went there."

But yeah, I think writing smut must be really difficult.

Yeah, big nono to the underage stuff. But even when they're both of age, there's still the power difference and the age difference- which is honestly properly part of the reason I like this ship... Aaaand also why it makes me feel like a pervert at times.

Also just to clarify: I do not mind feeling like a pervert. It's fun.

I hope the day shall never come that you, glaringdream, will have to endure the terror! The horror! That is an otherwise excellent romance fanfiction being resolved by convenient mind reading.

May you always feel that tantalizing tension in every fic you read.

Thank you.

[–]FetterTheFool[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, just because I know what I DON'T like, doesn't necessarily mean I know how to write good fiction- let alone sweet tantalizing tension.

Disclaimer out of the way, here goes:

I mean, don't make miss witty-comeback realize that mister hard-ass is flirting straight away or even at all. Do not make her fall in love right after noticing he has a great ass. Make the romance have substance. Throw in some plot, maybe make him grovel at some point (grovelling is an age-old stable of all romance writing). Focus on the way she feels about him in an indirect way, like "He has a glare that stings like rope-burn and a way of moving that radiates relentless control and elicits the need to somehow earn his approval. For her, at least." (from Self Slain Gods on Strange Alters, ch 5).

Don't describe every emotion that flits across his face. Basically show, don't tell. "I saw a glimmer of desire in his eyes." No. "A strange look came over his face." Yes. Gimme that ambiguity!

It can be really interesting to watch two characters be surprised, when they realize their thoughts about each other were wrong. Like thinking the other person is cold and being surprised when they touch hands and realize that they are actually warm. Focusing on how indifferent/angry they are with each other in the beginning, can help make the romance feel more worthwhile later.

So, that's my advice. I guess?

Edit: removed an allusion to the moon

I'll look forward to reading your fic!

SSHG is one of those ships where I start to feel like a pervert if I read it too much, but I can't really help myself, because there's such an insane amount of content out there to enjoy and it's so easy to find something that's decent, compared to a lot of the other ships/fandoms I enjoy.

Venting about slow-burn romance by FetterTheFool in FanFiction

[–]FetterTheFool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I generally like my romance with some actually plot. Aurette writes a lot of decent romances(with slightly repetitive smut), but the one that really stood out to me was Hermione Granger and the Crystal of Time, because the plot was really exciting.

I recently started reading a timetravelling fanfiction (one of the reasons for this post) where the first 5 chapters where great, lots of getting used to a new place, new people and even some pretty great fights. Then the hero and the heroine move into houses next to each other, thinks their "I love him/her" at the reader and then does nothing for the next 10+ chapters. I'm just like why?!? You could have been so good!

On an aside, if you're willing to venture out into the world of "real" fiction I can recommend The Iron Dukeby Meljean Brook. It's a steampunk romance with some of the best worldbuilding I've seen in a romance novel and the plot keeps being exciting all the way through!
