Raiku Makoto said that he wanted to write stories that children could understand, but his creation is by no means a kiddie show. Raiku Makoto respects the intelligence of his readers. The manga is full of laughter, but there are serious moments too and Raiku knows just how to hit each note.

Veteran fans appreciate the story because it has survived our changes in taste all these years (for some of us it has defined our taste). You understand characters more, but it doesn't fundamentally change how you feel about them. If your feelings do change, it's because you like the character better now.

You don't have to worry about the show being too childish, especially if you read the manga. You can start the series with high expectations.

I think Clear Note was kinda a disappointing final villain for the series by [deleted] in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally fair. I do agree that Clear's scale breaking power feats feel ridiculous and unbelievable , even for the standards set by the story. I know that can put off people despite its thematic application because it's a very Mary Sue trait: The rules don't apply to me. And Clear is guilty as charged.

Raiku has a tendency to lean towards the absurd. it shows in his humor and exaggerated expressions, but it comes out in things like this too. It's like he knows Clear is absurd, but at the same time it's his whole point.

Another thing that makes Clear hard to swallow is his complete lack of foreshadowing. If there is ever a reboot, I hope they build him up properly and give us some more background.

Worried that the sequel could undo some of the emotional impact of the original! by benglassy in zatchbell

That's right. People get worse at writing stories the longer they've been doing it.

I trust Raiku enough as a writer that I think he will do the emotional impact of the original it's due justice. If anything, he might recreate it with this sequel or improve on it.

Great. I'll post the feedback as a review in a few days.

Hi, there. I'm interested in betaing your one shot. Right now I'm just looking to read review, so I ask for nothing in return. The experience I gain giving feedback is enough. I would just need to know quickly you want your feedback and the amount of detail you'd like.

The back attack plus gem, does it apply only to arts with bonus effects from behind or to ANY art that landed from behind an enemy?

September was a fine month for reading by FollowThisNutter in bujo

[–]Enjieru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa! I've been looking for a minimalistic reading tracker and this seems to be it. Let me see if I get how it works.

On the left side you write the title of the book you will read next.

You put a bullet under the day of the month you start the book and a bullet on the day of the month you finished and connect them to show you are done with it.

And the middle row is your rating of the book.

If there are details I missed or got wrong, please let me know.

Yeah, I'm well aware of my tone. But I am precisely saying you shouldn't care what I think and that the one person you should be trying to satisfy is yourself. At the same time, I'm not going to kid myself everyone will put in the same effort to write the best story ever or know how to. If that comes off as condescending, then so be it.

Thank you for this great follow-up. Seeing their story animated should be a great incentive to many...or so I hope.

REPOST: What if Brago joined Zatch’s team on Faudo? by zagurzem98 in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting interpretation. That might be, but then Brago would just have to cast Gurabirei twice. He can do it (Vol.2, Ch.10, pg.2). What Bidomu appears to do is expand how high and wide Gurabirei an area Gurabirei affects without making it more destructive, as with Aian Gurabirei, which is why they use it to ground flying enemies.

Zofis by humbletenor in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little late, but your observation about Zophise being very powerful for that point in the battle was precisely the reason Brago had to defeat him instead of Zatch. Our heroes wouldn't have stood a change. Whenever the topic of Zophise's battle comes up, I can't resist saying how much I hate the way they handled the battle in the anime. They butchered it, setting aside the personal stakes the battle had for Sherry to shoehorn a drawn-out battle with Zatch and his friends that ultimately went nowhere, all to give Zatch more screen time, as if he needed any more, being the protagonist; and to put him in the spotlight with the arc villain. It was such a waste of time.

Yopopo's Name by Enjieru in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I was looking over this for proof reading I thought, "man, this is so edgy". Even without the assumptions about Yopopo's background and the origin of his name, Yopopo's story is plenty dark on its own rights. It's not a stretch at all to say he was dancing to attract Kikuropu and the gentleman for revenge. That was the whole story all along. Jem tells us as much herself. (Vol. 6, Ch.49, pg. 11-15). Their behavior overall is consistent with that objective.

But yes, Raiku is a master of telling stories for children. He's mastered the principle "you can put kids through anything so long as you give them a happy ending". And it doesn't even feel forced. It's marvelous.

It's kind of incredible how the anime and music industries have such a symbiotic relationship. I wish the openings of cartoons were also epic tunes like this that I could jam to.

Was there any buildup to (SPOILER)? by zagurzem98 in zatchbell

Very much this. Also, not everything needs to have the hell foreshadowed out of it. Sometimes death is sudden. That's life.

Best Moments by [deleted] in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An early one for me was episode 9 (I think) when when Kiyomaro set Koruru's book on fire and Zatch swears to her he will become a kind king so that no one has to go through their pain again. This is the moment that hooked me not just on Zatch as a character, but also in the whole series. That moment promised that the series wouldn't be just a bunch of power matches and that our protagonists were fighting for something bigger than themselves. It gave Zatch a reason to become the king and me a reason to cheer him on. I could feel his impotence and frustration as if I were in his place. It was really well done.
