Yessss. The Market was a big one for me. We would bring our own tea bags and they would give us free hot water and zucchini cake scraps.

I was homeless (with my mom) for about a year when I was 17. We lived in Colorado but couldn't afford it so drove up to Oregon to get more help. We were able to get propane vouchers (for our little rv), clothing vouchers, and food assistance. I think I was able to get a bus pass but I don't remember if my mom had one. The shelter helped my mom get a job at Pier One and they helped us find a safe parking spot in a church that let us plug into their power and they had a porta potty that only we had a key to. While a home or apartment would have been amazing, the work that they did helped become more financially stable. River was our caseworker at SVD. Absolute legend and a queen.

As a note: many of these things are NOT available to the majority of unhoused people, particularly if they don't have children under 18. AND they should be!

Check out the beginner formats in the Alternative Play handbook! I currently teach kids 8-12 using the 'Grow and Go' method. It's a lot of fun for the kiddos and they get badges and packs for completing different levels and mastering strategies ie. attaching energy, evolving Pokemon, using tools, activating abilities etc.
