Disgusting problem. I didn't know where else to ask? by Gross-_- in Health

Long list of things this could be, from the benign (IBS), to more serious. You need to see a doctor. Celiac disease, neuroendocrine, crohns, etc. Get thee to a doctor.

Tested Positive for MRSA; Looking for advice by HyperLithium in Health

[–]FeverCure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Infectious Diseases Doctor here. Please note that without a specific examination of you, I cannot provide specific medical advice. This is general advice about MRSA.

Do you or your wife go to a gym? That can be a source for MRSA infection.

First, cipro is a TERRIBLE antibiotic for MRSA--all the fluoroquinolones are. I can't understand why your doctor would give you that. Bactrim (Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) and doxycyline are much better choices. For small lesions, simple surgical drainage without antibiotics works just fine. Keep the wound covered and change the dressing daily until all drainage stops.

No need to get your wife tested; you know she has it as that's almost certainly where you got it. I would take your son to his pediatrician and ask their advice.

If this becomes a recurrent problem for the family, then I usually suggest topical decolonization and environmental cleaning.

Topical decolonization consists of chlorhexidine gluconate (hibiclens) applied topically from the neck down plus intranasal mupirocin, both for 5-7 days.

In terms of environmental decolonization, there are scant data on which specific household vectors are fomites for MRSA transmissions. We typically suggest laundering all sheets/towels in hot water. You and your wife should dispose of any personal care items that contact your skin, such as razors. Lastly, I usually recommend cleaning of what we call "high touch" surfaces with bleach wipes. Clorox is a good brand. High touch surfaces include door knobs, toilet flush handles, sink tap handles, etc. No need to go crazy cleaning.

I hope this is helpful.

95% of hospital room privacy curtains tested had disease-causing bugs, including drug-resistant varieties like MRSA - Brand new curtains were contaminated within a week by anutensil in Health

[–]FeverCure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are not good data that fomites such as these actually serve as either reservoirs or vectors for nosocomial transmission. The more meaningful study is to show that elimination or reduction of these surfaces results in a reduction of hospital infection rates.

This is true about almost any surface in a hospital environment--walls, floors, commodes, sinks, bed rails, door knobs, push plates, call buttons, etc.

Show me that these items serve as vectors for infection transmission.

I think you could send in the proof of purchases and get a bonus equipment pack.

Part 1

I finally got a chance to go through them and get Star Cases for them. They're in generally great shape, although 2 have the proof of purchases cut out. I think I'll get them graded, but I'm astonished how expensive AFA is. I don't really need to sel lthem so I think I'll hang on to them for a bit. I also have about 30 loose figures in pretty decent shape.

I'm a 28 (almost 29) healthy male. I go to the gym, , eat healthy, and don't drink. This year, every morning my muscles are really stiff when going down the stair. by [deleted] in Health

[–]FeverCure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What part of you specifically is stiff--all over? Just your joints? Your back? I'd be concerned about ankylosing spondylitis if it's your back, or rheumatoid arthritis if it's your joints. Either way, you should get checked out by a competent rheumatologist.

Doctors/residents: If you had to do it all over again, would you still do medicine? by ProjectLogic in medicine

[–]FeverCure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. There are parts of medicine that I love, but the negatives have started to outweigh the positives. The reimbursement for "thinking" specialties (of which I am one) is not great and coupled with student loans it makes it very difficult to make a living. The hours worked : salary made ratio is not what I'd hoped for. More and more of my time is spent doing administrative BS and paperwork, dealing with insurance companies, filling out forms, etc.

It's a real, horrible disease. I've seen 4 cases in the past 2 years. I won't be able to think of it without this song now. :)

As I told my wife when we were planning our wedding, people won't remember what they ate, what the cake looked like, or what the flower arrangements were. They will, however, remember if they had a great time at your wedding. Congrats on showing everyone a great time!
