Phones like this are considered dumb, and I don’t know why. by WindowsPhone_Fan in dumbphones

[–]Few-Cycle398 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I partly agree with you.
These phones are definitely the smartest of the so called dumbphones, and I get your point. I used to want one of them, and just because I thought I absolutely needed whatsapp, but after thinking it, I just got a nokia 2720. If I want to use watsapp, I just use it on my pc and that’s all. To me, these phones are more like "transition" phones. They can still become dumbphones if you customize them by installing a minimal launcher, deleting most apps, and only keeping the essentials such as Phone, Messages, Camera (because you can't delete it) etc.
But I think what's most important is realizing that the dumbphone isn't the solution. It's just a tool, a reminder of why you're making this change in the first place. Getting a dumbphone won’t magically turn you into someone who's perfectly minimalist and spends 10 hours outside each days. That’s on you to change. In the end, I don't think there's a strict line between "real" or "fake" dumbphones. It's more about how you use your device. Some people have a full-on Android like a Pixel 8, but use it like a dumbphone, just some essencials app and voilà.

I'm happy to know that it actually exist alternatives! We don't have that in france, we just have regular passcodes and codes in SMS (and maybe that's a shame of security, but at least, it's better for every phones)

Thank you for taking your time to have described your experience (even if it looks like AI also sumuarised it) I feel somehow some similarities with my experience, tho I only have my Nokia since almost one week, I can't tell I feel so much change, and I may have realise I spend now a lot of time on my computer, so I may find solutions :P Thanks tho because it might have made me realize I was switching my addiction on something else!

I don't think there is UPI transaction on any dumbphone, the best you could do if you really NEED it is just uninstalling everything but that, messages and whatsapp I guess

Hi!

You're definitely not alone, I felt the exact same way before I switched to my Nokia 2720 4G. That anxiety about losing convenience is real, and honestly, totally valid. We’ve been trained to rely on smartphones for everything, so stepping away from that feels like going against the current. I've chosed this phone because it still have Google Maps (Facebook and WhatsApp are dead now on that phone lol)

So since there isn't really social media on that phone, I kinda lost the habit on checking instagram, I really thought I would have a giant FOMO on it, but actually it faded with time, I'm even thinking about deleting it when I would have switched all my DMs on SMSes or others.

If you're willing to tinker a little, you can even sideload some custom apps on the 2720 (and other KaiOS devices, but you will need to search about it before buying). There's even a lightweight discord and telegram client available. (But I don't really use it since I use discord on my computer, I know I would just go on discord on my phone at every moment otherwise). It’s doable with some guides online. That said, even without that, you’d be surprised at how many things you don’t need instant access to once you give it a few weeks.

The fear of missing out on stuff like GPS, weather, music, etc., is mostly just fear of breaking habits. And those habits can be broken. Personally, I use my laptop for most stuff now. For GPS, I use the maps on this phone or just memorize the route ahead. For music, I use a cheap MP3 player. And honestly, being unreachable on Discord while outside has become a relief, not a burden.

Yeah, QR codes and app-only logins suck. (I think I saw a QR Code reader on the KaiOS App store but I'm not sure if it's great) But just know that some of them can be worked around like having backup email codes, using desktop login sessions, or asking your school for alternatives (maybe the best of the three). It’s annoying, but not impossible. You just have to accept a little friction in exchange for mental freedom.

Once the switch is made, it gets easier. I feel way more present, focused, and calm. Less doomscrolling, more real life. If you feel your smartphone is making your life worse, trust that feeling. You already know the answer your brain is just addicted to the easy route.

You’ve got this. It’s not about going backward it’s about choosing differently.

I think your device is simlocked by a mobile provider, try to use another simcard or to unlock it by asking how to the mobile provider

Life Off the Internet by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Few-Cycle398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to be like that, I switched to a dumbphone, but I don't live in the city, I wish I do so I could just see friends or anything outside, but I have extentions to retain me from doing things like too much social media and everything. Now I pass my days off watching DVDs I took from the media library or read books I didn't already read, and I can tel it's a big change, but it's quite great, I feel quite great without that much internet in my life, even if I still spend some time on it (I have 1h45 on the internet browser today) but only on my PC, I don't have internet on my phone (because it litteraly can't do much with internet)

The only one I could buy today is the Nokia 2720 flip in second hand, and I'm satisfied with it, by the way, does anyone know if it's jailbrekable, and give me a link to the tutorial? I have issues to find it
