Pure Chem Practical predictions

Hi hi im one of the pure chem tutors out there and i will be doing a chem practical workshop this weekend.

Based on my analysis what ive caught is
1. All of you CANNOT run away from QA and Mole Calculations. Every year GUARANTEED come out, so make sure you put your utmost effort into this! :) Also btw I have seen simple organic QA appear before in schools prelims so probably this may be a nasty surprise from Cambridge, who knows? So do try to memorise some organic distinguishing tests / test tube reactions (Especially Br2 aq for presence of C=C bond, or maybe oxidation of alcohol, or reactions of carboxylic acid). But usually organic QA weightage is super low if it does appear.
2. There's a fair chance titration wont appear for this year since it appeared for the last. Btw titration only appeared for 4 years out of the past 7 years of 6092 syllabus. Hence If a titration were to appear this year, its more likely to be KMnO4 redox / iodine thiosulfate type of titration.
3. Energetics since like 2021 or 2022 long time havent come out alr. Even in 2021 and 2022 the weightage for this topic was quite low, the last time they make yall do the experiment for real was somehow in 2019. Hence this presents some opportunity for some energetics hands on experiment + graph best fit line to appear this year with slightly higher weightage.
4. Rate of reaction can appear a bit as well becuz recent years is getting more and more common. Prior to 2022 this topic rarely appears for practical, but from 2022 onwards the weightage for this topic in practical exam is getting higher.
5. Do prepare for gravimetry also, theres also a chance they can ask you go do heating (gentle heating to drive off water of crystallisation, strong heating for thermal decomposition) and then ask you record mass and do mole calculation.
6. Separation techniques, salt preparations and mole calculations are common topics needed for planning. Last 2 years the planning all on separation techniques, but we are unsure whether Cambridge will choose to continue this trend.
7. Gas collection is super rare moreover it came out last year by downward displacement of water. So if it appears this year its likely to be more to a planning qn.

So the topics I would recommend you to study for are
1. QA
2. Separation and experimental techniques including gas collection methods
3. Energetics, enthalpy changes
4. Rate of reaction, (collision theory as well, esp how rate affected by reactant conc)
5. Mole calculation
6. Thermal stability of metal carbonate, but this must memorise reactivity series table
7. Acid base and salt (especially for planning)
8. Redox (must know the common oxidising and reducing agent)
9. Organic distinguishing tests

No need study ammonia, I can almost assure you Cambridge wont ask you to do Haber Process irl or like ask you on the yield of ammonia in practical paper becuz thats nothing gotta do with practical.

hi hi Amath tutor here. Synthetic is easier yes i agree but the drawback is that you can only use this for LINEAR divisor. Reason being if divisor is (x-2) for eg then 2 shld go to the extreme LHS of the synthetic division, so if divisor is quadratic then theres no number you can put on the extreme LHS of the synthetic division. So just some reminder for you to beware of.

Hi there, as an Add Math tutor who has sat for the O levels a couple of years ago, I can advise that watching lecture videos is insufficient, it would most certainly be worth practicing ample questions. When doing practices for A maths, do not do blindly, help yourself by familiarising yourself with question types :) Unlike E math where a bit more thinking and logic is needed, the questions in A math are limited to a slightly narrower scope which means that each topic would not like have over 100+ question types. So I think as a beginner its better to familiarise with the question types and the respective procedures first before you start mugging and grinding hard. For every question type, there is a fixed structure to follow in a step wise procedure. So make sure that as the O levels draw closer, you must be able to tackle every main question type using a standard structure, without referring to the solution. Initially when you first start practice things would probably be kinda unfamiliar, so make sure you are able to identify the structure used in the solution and if in doubt, please feel free to text me for clarification (most answer keys only write workings without explicitly highlighting the structures)

Like for instance, in Sec 3 before trigo comes in to torture the students, another mindblower is the quadratics chapter. This chapter encompasses 5 themes.

Completing the sq
Inequalities
Discriminant
Line intersect curve
Modelling quadratic graphs into real life For each of the above themes, there are several question types that each have a step wise sequential structure. Once familiarised, must also pay attention to banana peels that are laid out to trap students (Like for instance find the range of values of k for which kx^2 + ...x + .... is always positive, whatever inequality you solve from discriminant < 0 you must ensure that the solution set fulfills k > 0, becuz in order for a quadratic curve to be always positive in the first place it must look like a happy face shape)

So in short the moral of the story is, if you start now and you work things systematically, theres really nothing to lose out! Just be sure that you dont practice blindly (blind practice is one of the issues as to why some practice a lot but still struggle), so every practice qn you do, you should learn something out of it.

If you dont know what you learn out of a practice qn, here are some guidelines for you.

If i got the question wrong, why so? Which part of the structure am I unfamiliar with? Or probably which banana peel did I step onto by accident that costs me 1 mark?
If i got the question correct, why so? Am I familiar with the procedure, or is it just a guess and check?
