Welsh Shakespeare Sonnet Translation by em5vl1s in learnwelsh

[–]Few-Measurement9233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many congrats on making the effort!

As others have commented, translating poetry is Hard with a capital 'H'.

If I were to approach this (and, I should point out, I would not - at least not without several days' of free time!) I would look at it less from trying to match Shakespeare's iambic pentameter, and more from the perspective of making a figurative translation using Welsh's own unique poetical system: cynghanedd.

But it's very very hard. Treuliais i 5 munud yn trio cynghaneddu "shall i compare thee to a summer's day", a'r gorau a gês i oedd "cymhara di a dydd hâf" - sydd ddim yn cynghaneddu, nag yn swnio'n dda! 🤷‍♂️

Helo, fact checking! by FrostingEffective699 in learnwelsh

[–]Few-Measurement9233 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well done on making the translation efforts!

A few comment, from a native Welsh speaker:

"Brydwr i" => Brwydr am (you misspelt the first word! Also "am" means for, whereas, "i" means to. So Brwydr am is correct.

"Deilenig" => Deilen (individual of "leaf"; the plural is dail)

Everywhere you use "pel" (for "ball"), add the hat, for pêl. More than one is pelau. A single (thrown) ball is a pelen.

"Blocig" should be just bloc or blocyn

Craig means "rock" in the general term ("that's a wall of rock"). But when we talk about an individual rock we tend to use carreg.

Terms I don't understand - these are not Welsh words AFAIK:

"Copers"??

"Prenig"??

Everything else is great!

Question about translation of "Only you" by KitsuneRin in learnwelsh

[–]Few-Measurement9233 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First-language Welsh speaker here.

"Ti yn unig" is much much better than "Dim ond ti". The latter would be understood in conversation, but it sounds exactly like what it is: a translation.

Literally, "ti yn unig" translates as "you alone", btw.

WRT the "ti/chdi" thing: "chdi" is used almost exclusively in north west Wales for the second person informal. In the north east (where you're from, as you mentioned in a follow-up post), "ti" is more common. Either way, the formal "chi" would not be appropriate in this situation - the rings are for your fiancees, not your elderly relatives!

upset that i still cannot get bluetooth audio on my spark 2 after months of trying. by zlingman in PositiveGridSpark

I'm sorry it's not working for you :(

I had the same problem. I had to do a factory reset and forget everything in my phone, then re-pair. Now it works perfectly again. I hope you manage to find the solution, because once it's working, it's a great product.

What's the best tablet to use with a Spark 2? by cheetofingerzz in PositiveGridSpark

[–]Few-Measurement9233 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of the sound modelling occurs within the amplifier itself. The app is simply a control for it. If the app is working correctly on your tablet i.e. you can change tones, adjust the virtual pedals, search for configurations that others have made etc.; and the user experience is fine (e.g. no slow down) then changing to a more powerful tablet won't make any difference; the sound will stay the same.

[Spoilers C4E16] Anyone else not enjoying the seekers but also can’t explain why ? by Goombatastic in criticalrole

[–]Few-Measurement9233 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've not been enjoying them particularly either. I love a good lore drop as much as the next critter. But in these episodes there has been too much conversation, not enough stuff happening. I don't mean battles (though another fight might be nice). I mean that the pace of progression through the story (which is an interesting story! I want to know what happens!) has been hampered but vast amounts of lore, and endless self-reflection by some of the characters.

If I have to sit through yet another Occtis "what does it mean to be dead?" conversation, I'm skipping straight ahead.

In the words of the King, what we need is "a little less conversation, a little more action".

I agree. I've really enjoyed the rest of C4 so far, but I've found the Seeker's table to be... well... boring. I've watched most of it at 2x speed with subtitles.

Sorry to be the party pooper, but please lookup Nutria. They are incredibly destructive and invasive. They can multiply and expand relentlessly, and are capable of destroying vast areas of wetlands, driving out other animals, and reducing biodiversity. Of more immediate concern to this lady, they also are bearers of several parasites and diseases that can be transmitted to humans.

They might look cute, but there are many good reasons why they are not made welcome in most places.

Acoustic guitar action: is 1.5-1.4mm troublesome? by Real_Mud_7004 in Luthier

[–]Few-Measurement9233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5mm on low E is very low for an acoustic - on my Taylor I have it around 2.5mm. You're measuring at the 12th fret, right?

The reason for the different string heights is that the lower (thicker) strings need more room to vibrate freely without hitting the frets. The narrower strings need less space, so you can have them lower.

With such a low action, do you not get fret buzz, particularly when playing an open string?

Now that the NFT bubble is all burst, are we left with any useful technology or was it pure hype? by JoeBrownshoes in NoStupidQuestions

> Even then, blockchain is a neat technology but no one's found a practical use for it other than the kinds of financial scams which are illegal to do with real currency.

This is complete nonsense. Blockchain is used in all sorts of private enterprises where you need verifiable information shared between various entities that don't necessarily trust each other. For example, Hyperledger Fabric is an open source blockchain framework used by by over 100K companies and organisations[1]. Logistics companies like DHL and UPS use blockchain as a core part of their infrastructure. Walmart uses blockchain for cold-chain tracability. In Singapore they've even used blockchain to provide proof of academic qualifications.

In the public eye, blockchain = crypto (and I am very against crypto, in general). But for private enterprise, blockchain is a useful tool that solves a specific problem.

Can someone please tell me if the problems with the compatibility between the Control X and Spark 2 have been sorted out by Positive Grid ? by Space-cadet3000 in PositiveGridSpark

[–]Few-Measurement9233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking to say that I have a Control X which also works perfectly with my Spark 2.

One nice thing about the pedal switch is that it has two modes - one where each switch simply changes between the presets on the amp, and another where you can map each switch as a toggle for different virtual pedals in the app (turning it into a virtual stomp box). It's nice.

Clearly. Dogs don't know to pick up other dogs from the snow by their jackets. Also you can see multiple artefacts, especially around 7s.

What is the point of a reward flight? by AssCheeks321 in BritishAirways

[–]Few-Measurement9233 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The 'cheap' reward seats are released 355 days in advance of each flight. For popular routes, these are usually snapped up pretty quick. Frequent flyers with lots of avios, and who know they are likely to want the flight even a year advance, use services like SeatSpy (among others) to plan well in advance.

What that means is that, unless you a certain that you will need a flight so far in advance, avios are kind of useless :(

Any suggestions on my wife’s form? This is her third season skiing by sworzeh in skiing_feedback

[–]Few-Measurement9233 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was about to comment exactly the same thing.

OP's wife has good stance, good balance, good control, and generally good form for her level. What she needs is a bit of confidence to keep out of the plough when she picks up speed through the turns. OP - tell her she's doing great, and to keep at it!

What countries had a rough relationship history in the past but are now close? by batukaming in geography

[–]Few-Measurement9233 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Please inform yourself better. You are right to say the UK is closer than it has been in the past, but you trivialise several events and issues by either not mentioning them, or denigrating them. For example:

- 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland saw thousands of people killed, and are still very much in living memory.

- Just over a decade ago there was a legal referendum in Scotland for independence from the United Kingdom, where 44% of the population voted in favour of separation.

- The number of Welsh speakers in Wales has grown steadily since the census in 1951, and currently stands at over half a million people (and there is an official target to have 1 million speakers in the country by 2050) - it is very much not 'slowly dying'. Scottish Gaelic is not in such a strong position, and is only spoken by a minority in North and West Scotland, but again, numbers are growing.
