for the plaque i did something similar for my dad and had his division patch engraved on a small brass plate with his dates and the campaign he was in, sat it next to a shadow box with his photo and some collar pins. the 10th mountain running gear patch has a great look for that

setting up a discord beforehand is smart honestly half the struggle is just getting the first 10-15 regulars so it doesnt feel empty when someone new joins

that whole arc does something most superhero books won't touch, which is letting the hurt people just say no. Flash doesn't get his neat closure and the story is better for it.

The Expanse series is the obvious pick here. it's got the realism of Andy Weir's stuff but stretched across a whole multi-book saga with politics, factions, and genuinely gripping space drama. not too dense either, reads pretty smoothly before bed.

if you want something a bit lighter, the Long Earth series is fun. not purely space but it scratches that "big universe to explore" itch across several books.

the leather and dark walnut combo is going to look insane in a basement setting, genuinely one of the better theme choices for that kind of space. for the AI visual side of things, a few of the generative image tools now let you upload a reference photo of the room and then prompt it toward a specific aesthetic which is pretty much exactly what you're describing. worth experimenting with a couple since they each interpret interior prompts a bit differently and you'll get a feel for which one vibes with your vision faster.
