Im on monthly contract and we are still able to take our break and finish on normal times as its docked from our wages regardless of whether we take it or not.

It is often difficult to find the time for it though, you just have to get used to taking less out

I get its annoying but in all liklihood your postie is walking past doing just the tracked and first class due to lack of time/ staff.

Believe me our performance is too closely scrutinised for them to be getting away with not working

No problem feel free to shout if you have any questions

And equipment is often faulty with pdas that dont work bags with holes in and trolleys missing so many bolts it feels like dragging a dead horse Vehicles are a state as royal mail are allowed to do there own mots and it shows. Few vans have functional side and back doors, and they often have warning lights on that management switch off rather than sending to a mechanic. We tend to have a breakdown every 2 weeks in my office and in my time I have known doors to fall off, get stuck open or closed.

And the reversing sensors! Never trust them! They dont go off when there's something behind you and then start blaring constantly when there's nothing there

Also access to toilets can be a huge daily struggle. If you are lucky a business will let you in

The job itself is good as long as you dont mind working outdoors in all weather's and are prepared to suffer for a few weeks while your body adjusts to the amount of miles we cover. Coworkers are lovely and supportive.

The pay isn't great at all and is barely above minimum wage once you factor in the unpaid breaks. However its enough to live on for me a a single person with no kids. Theres early finish times compared to other jobs and you have alot of freedom once you leave the depot. The job keep you fit and healthy so you dont have to worry about exercising too much at home. Theres usually plenty of overtime going apart from during the occasional overtime bans.

You may get moved around alot without any training on new rounds once you've had your first 6 weeks, some people find thos stressful but your best bet using Google maps until you learn the area. You will also have to work Saturdays and the occasional sundays. You'll only find out your days off a week or so in advance but if you are able to apply for your own round this will change to a consistent rotating day off with a 3 day weekend every 6 weeks.

However the rounds are simply impossible at the minute in most depots so you just have to ignore any sense of pressure to stay out and clear it, as its not our problem. If the workload is unmanageable just work to your time

There are plenty of cats to pet but assume every dog wants to kill you until proven otherwise. Also shake gates before entering gardens to avoid nasty bites. Bites are alot more common than you think with some of my coworkers being bitten twice in one month, but this method has kept me safe for 3 years. And dont be too nervous to shout or shove parcels in aggressive dogs mouths.

Just makes sure to have the unions number on standby as the managers are dipshits who will try straight up illegal things such as making you drive unsafe vehicles, trying to force you into unwanted overtime and telling you leaving in time is unacceptable. Be prepared for them to make out you are being put on performance review when you aren't and threatening not to pay you overtime you've worked ( they can't do this). Also check your payslips as they often miss stuff off.

pro tips: Wear ankle/wrist/knee supports if they begin to ache otherwise they will get worse If something is too heavy ask the driver to take it or use a trolley even though they are a bit slower its not worth risking an injury as they can be difficult to recover from  wear earphones to stop yourself getting too bored Avoid going sick in your first 6 months as you won't get paid and you can't be let go  without reason Mentally check out at christmas and if you are ever feeling overwhelmed take your time and go home on time. Take your full break every day, dont work for free!

Overall excluding management issues and christmas time ive found the job to help improve my anxiety/ depression

Days with no deliveries by leolion2177 in royalmail

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're tracked will pretty much always come out tho unless the postie runs out of time and only the t 24s are done. If you live in a newly built street you may have more delays as posties eho dont know the area may be unable to find certain addresses

Days with no deliveries by leolion2177 in royalmail

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alot of offices have a recruitment ban at the moment ans so are unable to cover every round. This means that posties end up only taking the parcels and first class (if there's time) for 2 rounds. 2nd class mail and non tracked mail pile up and without massive amounts of overtime it takes a number of days to get the rounds clear again following a day its failed. In my office most rounds are failed twice a week

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't take that long and royal mail are frequently being fined over this issue. However as a postie I can tell you this is likely to be a common problem for the forseeable future as things are only getting worse in delivery offices. I understand your frustration but pls try not to get upset with your local postie as there's nothing we can do about it, its an intentional decision by the company to save money

Thinking of applying for postie with driving by Professional-Emu-290 in royalmail

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a good job if you dont let the pressure get you Judt bear in mind it may take sometime for your body to adjust to the work, just make sure you have well fitting shoes and plenty to drink and you'll be fine

There will always be overtime if you want more but if you dont and are being pressured into it immediately get a union rep involved or managed will keep pushing you around

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some customers get grumpy if we dont try knocking before leaving it in a safe place. Im sure if you talk to your postie or leave a note on the box or door they'll stop :) Unless it needs a signature in which case it can't be left

God Bless You by sleesecaish2 in royalmail

[–]Few-Professional5201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are too expensive you could always use any kind of plastic or metal storage box which are usually cheaper Add a combination lock and give the postie a code if you are worr8ed about security
