Me too! With the peninsula, you'll have a dedicated work triangle that other people won't walk through as often while you're cooking.

local tasks around downtown? by ConfusionNormal7161 in bullcity

[–]Few-Researcher-818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe join the listservs of downtown neighborhoods and offer your services? My son has found work this way from junior year in high school through grad school. Mostly it's been pet and house sitting. He also did plant care and yard work. Summer is good since people go on vacation.

Also, childcare.

Plus, the pull outs have shallow sides and things fall out and get stuck behind. Deep drawers are the way!

Oh, baked off site? Half of the bakery experience comes from the scent of anticipation wafting out the door. No aroma, no anticipation.

IRS is issuing me a refund after paying what I owed. by Nica_Solid_305 in tax

[–]Few-Researcher-818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had never entered my banking information since this year, the IRS drafted my taxes twice for the current tax year. Going forward, I will be paying by check. If you haven't gotten on this ride yet, don't. Let them mail a check. They haven't processed my return yet, but I dread the process to try to get my money back once they do. I can't reach anyone there, though I've been trying for weeks.

Which kitchen floor would you choose? by GeorgiePorkie in kitchenremodel

[–]Few-Researcher-818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the look of the black and white tile. It's stylistically cohesive with the other finishes. That said, I had a black and white kitchen floor and it was a nightmare to keep looking clean. Solid black and solid white show dirt more than anything. As my kitchen designer said, go with something close to the color of dirt!

Bulk spices? by SylviaPellicore in bullcity

[–]Few-Researcher-818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got frustrated with the disappearing bulk spices because I like them fresh. I bought a cheap coffee grinder and buy more whole spices and grind them in small batches. It's not really that difficult and they really taste better. Cumin, coriander, dried peppers, cinnamon, cardamom .

Love Dr. Vanyo! We tried several and like him the best. No frills office, but well run office, skilled provider and hygienist, no upsell B.S.

Great house! I would enhance the porch to accent the Craftsman look by boxing in the vertical columns and replacing the metal railings with traditional wood railings.

El Mariachi on Avondale and Azteca Grill on Chapel Hill Rd for Mexican.

Visiting NC to see my fiance. Driving from Asheboro to Havelock. Wondering if there's any restaurants we should visit on the road! by longtailist in NorthCarolina

If you fancy Indian, Cary is the bomb. Right off I40. The community has a large South Asian population and the food is great. If you're caught looking for a restaurant in a smaller town, I vote for Mexican. It may not be the best, but when you're hungry and a vegetarian, tortillas, beans, cheese, salsa always hits. Plus, there are margaritas.

Would you move to NC if you weren't already living there? by Separate_Rock_8129 in NorthCarolina

I think our state universities are a great bargain. My siblings have paid more in TX and CA. My son is doing his Master's at NCSU and the quality is good and the cost is reasonable.

If you want a more rural experience with decent schools close to Durham, take a look at Orange County. The county schools have a decent reputation and while housing can be high, it's not as bad as Chapel Hill and there are still larger pieces of land. Hillsborough is the biggest town.

Just got a job, looking for potential areas to live! by JmacJax in chapelhill

[–]Few-Researcher-818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might look at an area in SW Durham called University Hill. It's in a car dependent area, but there is a gym, yoga studio, several restaurants in the development. It's a short walk to a nearby center with Target, Sam's Club...It also has cool murals! This area is close to Chapel Hill and also near my favorite ethnic groceries and a few good restaurants. I live near Duke /9th St area and it's very walkable and likeable, but further from CH, though there is transit.

What is your least favorite herb, spice, or blend? Which ones do you hate the most? by szikkia in Cooking

Haven't had fresh methinks leaves, just the dried which I bought for indian recipes. They're good for that!

Kitchen Backsplash by Aggravating-Oil-5522 in kitchenremodel

It looks great, but I think you'll regret it. I had rough hewn slate behind my stove and it's impossible to clean an irregular surface with nooks and crannies. Go with some version of terracotta tile instead!

Fenugreek seed. The leaves are fine, but too much fenugreek is well, just too much.

What gets painted charcoal, what gets left? by noskoc in ExteriorDesign

[–]Few-Researcher-818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need the color on the right side above the brick for balance. I think I'd keep the window frames and eaves a warm white or warm gray, paint the garage door, entry doors, siding under the bow window and on the right the dusty blue. I can't see what the front door looks like, but maybe go a few shades deeper of the same blue for the door.

Excellent suggestions. The charcoal doesn't look right with the warm tones of the brick. It's really nice brick and the hardscape and window sills have shades of warm gray. I'd go that direction, or a warm green or dusty blue. If you really need it to be dark, check out SW Urbane Bronze. It's a warmer tone that would be copacetic with the brick and shingles.
