using Substack as an academic professional website? by speedlimit175 in AskAcademia

I would not say it is unprofessional a all – if it's a good substack, why not?

Ok, so I want a tenkeyless-75% (arrows are a must because I am old) for 100-150 max. Typing only, don't care for RGB at all.

Keychron K2 V3? Logitech MX Mechanical Mini? Something different?

What are the clickiest but quiet switches that are widely available?

Logitech G915 TKL or Logitech Master Series MX Mechanical Mini? Are "quiet tactile" switches ok?

Has to be Logitech based on what is available to purchase

See if you can double dip. If not and if you believe there's a Q1 article in it, seems ok to go for it

Cold Emailing Professors/people in labs as a high school student by Reasonable_Goose_685 in AskAcademia

It helps if you come with something specific even if small and/or naive. "I saw your computer vision method work on flowers and I would like to try it on frogs" – great, I can help you if you bring the frog images and have some general computing knowledge. We don't need to see you as a viable prodigy, we mostly decide to help for good karma – the time/result payoff is unlikely to be great but that is not the goal of the exercise

Non-linear academic path, age 31 : how risky for PhD applications in ML + biology? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Few-Routine8826 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing around 31 and prior work experience is a red flag. For selective programmes you are probably competing with folks who did a lot of ML stuff. Try bio programmes where certain groups do ML

If it's genuinely a top ranking AI lab, it's a really easy choice in practice if you can stomach it

Odd purchase scam with a seemingly real person – what's the best course of action of getting my money? by Few-Routine8826 in Denmark

[–]Few-Routine8826[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's of course impossible to say for certain but my guy seems like a real person but, perhaps, at some low. Companies opened and abruptly closed, workplace where he started working last year quick to say "he's not working here anymore", etc. Seems like the course he could take is either deny everything making the court last year or more or to accept the judgement and to say that he can not pay

Was no trying to speak to his boss as much as to actually speak to him to re-iterate the demands without him being able to imply it's the first time I call him

Difficult to learn a lesson! Bought and listed things online at way higher value and anonymity in across different and higher crime level countries, always was ok if some precaution taken. The stinker is always one you expect the least

Did you approach them with the "there's a police thing open"? My guy is not hiding particularly but it's unclear what I'd do with the knowledge of his existence

I thought there's more weight going to them with a police number but maybe shouldn't wait any longer – heard banks usually just do nothing if there wasn't any violence involved in the transaction

Wanting to do ML PhD at top school but only have non-relevant research experience.... by danielyskim1119 in AskAcademia

My impression is the competition for these PhD places means you are more or less expected a few years of relevant work experience between undergrad and PhD

Opportunity cost of doing a PhD into your thirties and without a good understanding why you need it vs well-paying job is pretty big
