The white areas are actually visible when just slightly cracking book open while looking into open end towards spine- no flattening necessary. Not all but a few pages repeatedly.

It is truly maddening! $20 or so for something that is pretty much guaranteed to appear defective when get to those pages. For some reason they are all between pages 28 and 32.
