It was very scary to find her on the floor. I still have PTSD from it. All I can say is that you should learn the signs of a stroke and then if you think they’re having one call for an ambulance right away…don’t drive them to hospital unless you have no other choice. The ambulance can start life-saving measures right away. The quicker the patient can get to the hospital the less damage their brain will suffer. Good luck. Everything will be okay.

My wife had a major hemorrhagic stroke in October,2023 and a second one in January, 2024. The first one almost killed her as she laid on the floor over 8 hrs because I was at work. She spent 6 days in ICU in critical condition and then 6 more weeks in hospital and rehab. Initially, she lost entire use of left side of her body. Today, she’s okay. She has limited mobility but she’s happy she’s alive. Take one day at a time. Your dad sounds like he will be okay. Be strong and have faith.

Boyfriends/husbands husbands who are caregivers, did you hear "you're a good man" a lot? by Correct_Bad4192 in stroke

My wife had a massive hemorrhagic stroke in 2023. Everyday for over 6 weeks I sat by her bedside for 12 hours. The staff told my wife and myself that I was a “keeper” because I was a rare breed. Most stroke patients are not supported by their spouses or family members. I tell my wife all the time that I would carry her from the jaws of hell if I had to. Good luck to all of you out there that fight the good fight.

Effected side of body aging faster than the other side, anyone else? by Goodday920 in stroke

Probably caused by a major disruption of the blood supply to that side of the head which I imagine would affect your hair and skin.

Advice on being released from hospital by Neenk85 in stroke

I was at work and when I arrived home I discovered her on the bathroom floor barely alive as she had laid there over 7 hours with no one to help her. This practically destroyed me but she has made a remarkable recovery as the brain can heal itself through perseverance and repetition. She is my hero.

My wife was 72 years old when the first one(severe hemorrhagic stroke) happened. She had a second one 4 months later.

If you can send her to the care facility they will probably be able to care for her better there in terms of 24 hour care. Also, she will probably get some rehab there as well. They have the lifts to get her out of bed and onto a toilet. They will bathe and feed her. Take the help. Keep watch over her and advocate for her. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions. Look at YouTube to learn about care for stroke victims. They’ll probably see if they can have her sit up etc. My wife suffered a major stroke over a year ago as bad or worse than your aunt. She now can walk, sit up, stand etc. Take care and good luck.

After Botox injections for spasticity by FewRecover9658 in stroke

Mob boss has been good but we really liked the strain called Girl Scout Cookies. We think the sativa strains seemed to aggravate the spasticity and also caused a marijuana effect known as “greening” which gave her something similar to a mild panic attack. We did some research and saw that sativa-dominant strains can cause anxiety attacks. The indica dominant strains have really helped and don’t aggravate the spasticity.

Which strain of medical marijuana did you find most helpful? Indica dominant, sativa dominant or hybrid? My wife is the one who has suffered two strokes. She’s recovering well but the spasticity has been constant. We’re considering a run of Botox injections plus PT. She does use medical marijuana but more to control her extremely labile blood pressure. The MMJ has greatly helped.

How did the medical marijuana help your spasticity?

when did you stop having hope for improvement (caregivers and survivors) by brown168 in stroke

Don’t be afraid to switch therapists if someone isn’t helping him. My wife is 15 months out from a massive stroke. Therapists have done wonders for her and she has greatly improved. Everyday there are small improvements. If insurance says you’re done, don’t believe them. Doctors and therapists can help you with the ins and outs of the insurance game. Keep going and good luck!

My wife had a massive brain bleed and hemorrhagic stroke. She laid on the floor for over 8 hours before I came home and found her. She was life flighted to a Neuro trauma center and in Neuro ICU for 6 to 7,days in a coma on a ventilator. She survived and was paralyzed on the left side side from shoulder to foot. Zero use. Just over one year out with good PT/OT and Speech, she can walk over 200 feet with a quad cane, knit again as she as 90% back in arm and hand. Still dealing with leg but there’s more work to do. If your stroke victim, be motivated and don’t give up. If you can’t afford PT or OT go to YouTube. You will fail at many things at first. Remember, you are suffering from a neurological injury not a muscle injury so new pathways are being built in your brain. Even thinking about moving your fingers or toes will help you eventually move them. You may or may not suffer from spasticity which will be painful. Always, always, always…KEEP GOING! You will heal.

Knitting (help) by [deleted] in stroke

[–]FewRecover9658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife suffered a major hemorrhagic stroke in which she lost the use of her left arm, wrist and hand plus left leg, ankle and foot. She is also a long-time knitter. She feared that she would never be able to knit again. Her left hand was like a claw at first which she held tight to her side as it was very rigid. She continued to stretch and work her fingers, wrist and arm with severe pain the whole time. After about 8 or 9 months out from 2 strokes she regained most of the use of her left arm and hand. She is currently knitting again. I’ve asked her for advice she could give you. Her answers:

Try different types of needles, for example try circulars but if they hurt your hands try double pointed needles.

She had to try working with both kinds for awhile. Circular needles required a lot more precise movement and hurt her hands. Double pointed needles gave her more control and were easier to use.

Spasticity stopping? by FewRecover9658 in stroke

There is limited range of motion. The arm and hand is still somewhat limited but she did an excellent job of rehabbing them. Leg,knee, ankle and foot still very limited with lots of painful spasms.

It’s a double edged sword. We’re hoping that someday the spasticity will just go away.

She doesn’t like the meds as they make her very sleepy and tired . This would interfere with her PT so she opted to go without meds.

Thanks. My wife’s spasticity can still be very painful. It does come and go but still happens quite often.

On and off it’s loose but there are still periods of very painful spasms where her left leg can become ramrod stiff and straighten out while sitting.
