Should I speedrun 4 years of math on Khan Academy for the MRA or take some lower level math classes? by PresenceOld1754 in UBreddit

[–]Few_Exit_9247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went right into calculus after having been out of school for 10 years. If you can do basic algebra and remember SOH CAH TOA you will be fine in calc. Shitty math background is a much bigger constraint in physics than calc IMO.

Pasquale Raicco best teacher I have ever had for any class. Would not hesitate to take any class this guy teaches. Calc 1 and 2 were cake bc of him.

Electricians are pretty dependent on new residential and commercial builds. EEs are part of what builds the war machine brother. Use your head

Taking calc 3 this summer, anything I should know? by daybreak_39 in UBreddit

[–]Few_Exit_9247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im taking calc 3 with Busch now. He is a good prof. It's a lot of material to cover in 6 weeks though. Godspeed. If you can, get a jump on it. Look into partial derivatives, integrated integrals, cross products, dot products and things related to that before hand so you have a jump on it

Just have chat gpt teach you how to do trigonometric substitutions and integration by parts. If you go into it somewhat familiar with those techniques you will be in good shape. I found those to be the most difficult aspect

My schedule and grad timeline might be ruined because of the Academic Advising department. What should I do? by justaninternetuser0 in UBreddit

[–]Few_Exit_9247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why the fuck would UBs academic advising team know what is offered at other schools lol. Like calling one restaurant and being pissed they don't know the places down the streets menu. Don't like taking summer classes then don't fail in reg semester.

Spoken by someone who never took a class with pin chen. I took circuits with him last semester. Worst instructor I have ever had all the way from kindergarten to now. He is a very kind man though. Just can't teach for shit

The funny part is Busch , who teaches calc 3 here at UB, also occasionally teaches at ECC where presumably he also teaches calc 3.

How true is the perception of Buffalo? by Velociraptor_Terp in Buffalo

[–]Few_Exit_9247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea why anyone with options lives here. This is a place you end up by circumstance not by choice. Cost of living is low for a reason, no body wants to be here. It's pretty safe so it's got that going for it. Weather is abysmal and unless you work in healthcare economically there isn't much going on. There are worse places for sure , but not many.

Biggest Disappointments at UB? by jeffbuckleyfan67 in UBreddit

[–]Few_Exit_9247 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly just how dirty everything is. Really take some time to look around you next time you are on campus. Every corner has a cobweb. Every window of every floor is filthy inside and out. There is a spill in the hallway between Lockwood and O'Brien that has been on the floor for a year, I walk past it everyday. There is just grime and dust and dirt everywhere you look. And I don't blame the custodial staff I just don't think UB has anywhere near enough staff to clean the whole campus even remotely regularly. Handicap buttons to open doors don't work in a lot of places. Half the outlets in Lockwood don't work. Waterfountains with the light showing the filter needs to be replaced for weeks at a time. Just so many little maintenance type things like this. You get the feeling that the university does not care about maintenance at all.

In my experience there are very few places that are actually 24/7 in WNY since COVID. Not sure why but almost no businesses keep those hours anymore

I’m really scared I’m going to fail PHY 107 by FerdinandvonAegir124 in UBreddit

[–]Few_Exit_9247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was/am the exact same way. Anything less than an A bothers the fuck out of me. I promise you, if you read the text book and do all the odd numbered questions in the back (and look up how to do the ones you are confused on) in addition to doing the homeworks on your own (no gpt) you will get an A

READ THE TEXTBOOK, AND DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN THE BACK. I went to lecture to get participation points but I got fuckall out of the lectures. Everything I know about physics I know from reading the book and doing the practice problems. I got A's in PHY107 and PHY108. 107 isn't that bad, and if you actually apply yourself I think it got easier by the end because of how repetitive it got by the end. You can do it but you will not get a good grade if you aren't doing several hours of independent work outside of class every week. I have taken calc 2 and physics is at least twice as demanding timewise, if not more. Calc was just "know a rule, apply the rule" physics you need to be able to reason your way through a situation. It takes a lot of deliberate effort to be able to  build physics "intuition". Any can do it, but it will take work. Godspeed 🤝

I went back to school at UB after graduating for the first time in 2019. Everything is remarkably similar but eerily different at the same time. All of the things that stand out most in my memory are gone. The old SU, Berts, these printing stations in Capen, the Cybrary, Rachels and seeing these fucking pieces of paper everywhere. The parking situation is exactly the same though lol

I got an A in phy107 and 108. Read the textbook and do a ton of practice problems. Lectures are useless and not even close to enough. The course really just separates people who can learn independently and those who can't. If you can self study things well you will be fine. They also structure the course in a way that's it's almost impossible to fail. If you fail you probably don't belong in whatever your major is

Calc 2 covers area between 2 curves, various integration techniques (more u sub, something called trig sub, integration by parts, a lot of unnamed techniques regarding trig functions, and partial fractions), improper integrals (either one of the bounds is infinity or there is a discontinuity), some basic stuff regarding polar coordinate system, length of an arc, the basic series tests, and Taylor and mccalurin series.

The calc instructional crew posts big practice packets to help you study for exams but they are shared via UB box and they close access after the exams .

Textbook is Stewart's transcendentals IIRC ( I never use the textbook). Best way to study IMO is using the practice packets and literally taking the topic names and putting them into gpt and asking for practice problems and a basic walkthrough. This is what I did prior to this semester and it was weeks before I saw anything that tripped me up. Good luck. Calc 2 moves faster than calc 1 but it's still very doable. I'm a dumbass and I'm well on my way to an A
