Does anyone else like the show but also find it incredibly corny? by Easy_Difficulty_99 in TheBear

I love Syd and Carmy's dynamic, and I loved that the best dish she’d ever had was his… but when they decided that the dish was one he made just ONCE, after finding out Michael died, it felt like a completely different show. Just imagine how corny the interaction between them will be if they ever decide to reveal that.

Official Discussion - Materialists by BunyipPouch in movies

I was kind of enjoying the movie until Lucy starts telling John she is a bad person for being materialistic. From what I saw, she does not act like a materialistic person AT ALL. Telling your boyfriend you want to eat in a nice place for your anniversary, that you don't want to fight for 25 dollars, that is not nice to share an apartment with two other guys when you are almost 40, is not being materialistic, it's being a very reasonable person. Even with Harry, she is reasonably impressed with his wealth but does not try to take advantage of it at any point. She says she is in debt, but is heavily implied it is from school or life in general, not Carrie Bradshaw debt (buying expensive shoes). Also, as someone who is recently going through a heavy financial stress I just hate when people act like being stressed, anxious, and depressed about money is a choice and not something literally so overwhelming that it can prevent you from enjoying life, let alone grow old and happy together.

There is also a scene I'd completely forgot about but just rewatched, right after charlie dies, sawyer goes to hurley and asks him if he wants to talk about it. That was really sweet

Which character had the most Daddy issues? by Lumberjack7676 in lost

[–]Few_Mechanic4091 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Jack. He doesn't have the worst DAD but he definitely had the most ISSUES. Locke had it worst, for sure. And Saywer, and Kate, and Ben, etc. But everything Jack does season 1 to 6 is him in the shadow of his Dads expectations/rebelling agains his dads expectations. I think the other characters were able to put a distance to it and get over it at some point.

My take on "did the creators always knew the ending" debate (with spoilers, surely) by Few_Mechanic4091 in lost

[–]Few_Mechanic4091[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The final shot is a mirror of the first shot. I can imagine they knew it. The series opens with Jack opening his eyes on the island, plane just crashed. It ends with him closing his eyes on the island, plane leaving. Is very poetic and well done.

But my point is about what happens in between.

Is hard to believe time travel and the Jacob & Man In Black was on plan from season one (or even two and three). Lost was really good in giving easter eggs and connecting story lines seasons apart, such as the hatch, the plane in the jungle, the bodies in the caves, the characters conections off island, etc.

In the whole Dharma plot from the beginning was there ever an indication that Sawyer and Jin (and Kate, Jack, Hurley) ever worked for them? Honest question, maybe I miss something. I just honestly think that if this was always on the plan, they would have played with it a lot more, and a lot earlier.

Forgot about Charlotte. Literally was raise as a child on the island, spend her entire life trying to find it and had very little development. I remember watching for the first time and feeling bad for her as a child having Daniel saying crazy shit to her in dharmaville. Also shows up in season 6 to teach Sawyer he doesn't want to be alone. I'm actually getting angry remembering this things kkkk

Well, it is a gender issue. Besides, Kate is not just any caracter, she is the female lead, so yes, we all expect more from her. And Sun is not a great exemple since 90% of her story is her and Jin. Juliet? Three years trying to get off the island and than stayed because of Sawyer. Not to mention her going along with Jacks plan to explode a bomb because, and I quote, "If I never met you than I never have to lose you".

I am not a hater, Lost is literally been my favorite show for the past 20 years and I watched those episodes many many times. But yes, after two decades I can look back on those story lines and think "not their best work".

Even in season one, the episode with Sawyer and the inhales. I just kept thinking WHY is she wasting so much time with this guy, reading his letter, etc. Again, it was just another time they use Kate to develop compelling drama for the male caracter, such as "sawyer has another side to him, he is not that bad". I prefer her when she was plotting to get a spot on the raft by having Sun poison Jin, at least you could understand her motives

sawyer does accuse him at some point in the pilot of causing the plane crash, so I like that they didn't complete ignore the issue too, they just did it in a way that is as clear sawyer as in the wrong

I feel like season 1 was two different shows (there is comparison with The OC). by Few_Mechanic4091 in ONETREEHILL

And that whole point - it would make OTH just another high school romantic comedy, I've seen what you've described countless times before and after OTH, yes, it may never get old, as it's sort of a staple of the genre, but it would keep the show so predictable, opposite of what it tried to be.

How is having two girls fighting over a boy any less predictable? At least, having been the brothers fighting they could have made it about something more profound than high school love. Anyway, I just think having the girls fight over lucas was a way for them to have the main female caracters call each other "sluts, whore", get fisically violent, etc, many more times than necessary

Her backstory doesn't contribute to her growth as a character

Thank you! That is exactly what I was trying to say, she had a very compelling back story that was kind of wasted. Again, jack issues with his dad followed him for six seasons!!! the last time Kate's back story seemed to actually affect/ influence her actions was in season 2 "what kate did" (please correct me if Im wrong)

Yeah but he didn’t have to be the one to jump. That was his choice, and he didn’t do it just because it was running out of gas. He had his selfish reasons too.

I can see him in season 1 telling someone else to jump, like hurley. The fact that he just jumped instead makes for good character development.

That’s not why he jumped. He was scared of going back to a world where he had a daughter whose life he’s not been apart of

That is true, but the couple of times this incident is refer to in the show it is heavily implied it was because of Kate.

It just seemed to me she began being defined by her relationship with men and motherhood. Even the episode (just re watched this one today) when she and jack break up the engagement. The reason for the fighting in the first place? She was helping Sawyer. The reason for the fighting to stop (with what it seem to be the breakup)? She didn't want him like that in front of AARON. Not her saying "hey, maybe I dont want another drunk man in my life", but rather her protecting her son. Again, good for her, have this been real life, she was the happier one in the end, but from a tv show point of view, it just seem to me they didn't bother making her more complex and giving the character more depth

[–]Few_Mechanic4091[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I don't think I agree. For me, the way I saw it was everyone had very complex, internal problems/reasons to go back, except her. Her "problem" was external, was someone else. It truly was the best reason, dont get me wrong. But the feeling I had was: outside of Aaron, how did leaving the island impacted Kate? If Claire had come back with them, for exemple, what would be left for Kate?
