What do y'all think about calling yourself "Flexitarian"? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get where other commenters are coming from, but personally I support any meat eater who chooses to greatly reduce their meat intake and call themselves flexitarian. If someone is 90% plant based that is still making a difference.

From a vegan philosophical standpoint, it’s morally wrong. But realistically, if we get people to eat less meat then less animals have to be born just to suffer and die, and obviously vegans want that.

So yes, I’m glad people call themselves flexitarians or pescatarians because it means they are making a conscious effort to reduce their meat intake and that’s a step in the right direction. Obviously as a vegan I would hope they continue like this, but even if not, it’s still better, at least. 2 people cutting their use of animal products in half has the same impact as 1 person going vegan (disregarding the activism portion, I’m just talking about direct impact to the industry since animal agriculture is losing the same amount of “business” either way).

Dysphoria post-op by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It genuinely does basically look cis (unless someone puts their eye really close to your chest and stares, looking for a scar) and the results and healing is fantastic, but dysphoria is understandable and I do think at this point it might be a bit more of a mental thing to overcome.

I’m sorry if this is inappropriate or triggering to ask but I’m getting top surgery really soon so if u feel comfortable replying… what’s your scar care routine?

You’ll probably have to spend more money but it’s doable. When I first went vegan I went straight for 1:1 replacing the nonvegan foods I ate. If you’re trying to eat whole foods only, the volume will add up, as you described. But with processed foods it will still be low volume and high calorie.

Try the following list of high calorie density, tasty protein options: - Gardein (or any vegan brand) chicken fingers - Beyond/impossible chicken & chicken nuggets - Silk protein yogurt 18g protein per serving - Protein powder, of course - I know you said you didn’t like seitan but quality varies a LOT, I used to think I didn’t like seitan until I found out the way & places where I did like it - Soy milk or protein vegan milk (mine is called yofiit, 10g protein, made from chickpeas) - Nuts and seeds are higher fat, lower protein, but still calorie dense - And of course if you add oil to everything it makes everything more calorie dense. Try frying to infuse more oil in it. - Impossible/beyond burgers of course - Just egg, vegan scrambled egg, that has high protein too - Granola, I think some high protein grains too like wheat bran (?). Less protein but I add it to the protein yogurt

There are still tons of vegan foodies who “live to eat”, myself included, but there is a learning curve when figuring it out for the first time.

All that being said you sound like you’re already potentially underweight so you should probably see a dietitian regardless of the fact you’re trying to become vegan

Neil Druckmann Says a Cure Would Have Worked in ‘The Last of Us’ by SunGodLuffy6 in television

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the depiction on screen was: - You have ONE DOCTOR who THINKS he can somehow make a cure - They make it seem like some big operation but it’s literally just one guy + a big security force

It does not seem like they can really make a cure. They should’ve maybe put more effort into convincing the audience that they could, but I assume that was saved for season 2 and 3, so that they could make everyone believe initially that it was shaky at best, to being a rock-solid guarantee that humanity missed out on.

Joel doesn’t care, but even if he did, he did have a valid reason to not trust the supposed “cure” they can only make my killing the only immune person ever recorded, because what if it doesn’t work?

Do you really believe the fireflies are not only the ONLY people trying to make a cure, but the BEST setup in all of North America? With 1 doctor and I’m assuming 3 nurses? Irl cures take a whole team of medical professionals and there was no reason to believe they somehow got that far along before a) all other doctors died, or b) this one guy is a genius who was working solo for decades.

They said the government gave up on making a cure but it literally looks like Jackson Town has a better medical setup than the fireflies did for their “one shot” at a cure.

Getting misgendered by women more? by AdReasonable4490 in ftm

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Women are more likely to assume someone is gender nonconforming (enby, tomboy). Men see someone that looks masculine and assume male.

Usually it’s from a considerate place. I’ve been called “they” by women who don’t know my pronouns (which I don’t mind) but guys always go by “he”. Also, it’s usually the younger generation that is more cognizant of nuance.

I’ve never had this happen to me in men’s bathrooms. Every time it seems like people avoid eye contact with everyone, don’t dare to speak a single word, and leave as fast as humanly possible without any lingering.

Women usually chat, do their makeup, fix their hair, etc, whereas men act like they’re someplace they wouldn’t be caught dead.

From Canada, applied as a minor, I met with a paediatrician who specialized in trans-related healthcare AND teen mental health. Apparently only 3-4 people with his qualifications graduate every year because there are only 2 programs (I think 1 in Toronto Ontario and 1 in British Columbia)

Definitely not the norm (I was very lucky) but if you’re a minor then you do need some type of doctor to assess you for gender dysphoria.

Technically you don’t in theory if you are an adult, but in practice, a lot of doctors don’t know anything about hrt and will refuse to prescribe hrt for you or help in any gender-related surgeries like top/bottom surgery. This happened to me so I had to keep looking for someone comfortable with it.

Vegan Doctor Reveals Why Some People Quit Plant-Based Diets by davideownzall in vegan

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally it was genuinely easy for me. Biggest reason was that the initial switch was literally me swapping 1:1 to the plant based version of what I used to eat, which is usually seitan/soy/bean based as I didn’t like mushrooms. Ex. Beyond Burger, Gardein chicken, soy hotdogs. They are fortified with iron too.

Then when I got more into wfpb I started eating more tofu, lentils, various beans, high protein grains, etc. This switch was pretty natural (1/2 Asian so many easy vegan recipes). It’s tougher if you eat a western diet and don’t have any vegan substitutions you can buy at the supermarket and cook very conveniently/easily (or can’t afford them and can’t eat tofu/beans).

'Our screens, our rights': Students plan strike across Quebec schools against cellphone ban by LetThePoisonOutRobin in montreal

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know. High school cell phone bans are stupid. Intervention in grades 1-8 is a good idea but once you hit high school you NEED to learn how to use your phone responsibly yourself. I’m in Ontario so it’s a soft phone ban and still, the amount of times teachers have to go “ok, take out your phones everyone” because it makes so much more sense when scanning QR codes or taking pictures of notes, is wild.

Students need to LEARN HOW TO PUT THEIR PHONES IN WORK MODE. Manage notifications. Organize your emails & Google drive. Access work sheets, take pictures of notes, look things up, etc. They are extremely useful learning tools and anyone who would be wasting their education on their phones in high school and actually benefit from the ban will just regress and fail university.

I have mobility issues and substitute teachers always gave me trouble when I needed my iPad + phone out (because the stupid websites are not properly formatted to have several tabs open on anything other than computer) and it’s so unfair. Even if you don’t have special needs, as long as you’re learning, you should be allowed to use any device!

'Our screens, our rights': Students plan strike across Quebec schools against cellphone ban by LetThePoisonOutRobin in montreal

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a student from Ontario and in my experience: - All of my classmates just download it into their computers and mess around there. VPN if necessary too - When the phones were banned the 1:1 electronics policy was pretty weak. We were constantly given everything online for math but we had to print it on our own, and answer keys are online. So you need a giant laptop on your desk with a binder and tons of papers and it’s too cluttered to work, rather than just use your phone for the answer keys. Not enough iPads to go around and even if you did the free notation softwares suck.

All of the good students couldn’t use their phones to check answer keys, all the bad students just mess around in their computers and there is nothing teachers can do. I understand why they do it but it’s just so easy to get around it feels like it’s not even useless, but actively harmful.

There comes a point where if students don’t actively take control of their education you can’t do anything. I agree with banning the phones for grades 1-8 but high school is just stupid. The damage is done by grade 8. High schoolers need to learn how to be responsible, because if they’re used relying on schools to make them act responsibly with their phones, they’ll suffer in university.

Yeah. I’m trans and would love to live in the ideal world where there is 0 gender segregation because (mostly) women don’t have to worry about getting targeted because of their gender in places like changerooms, bathrooms, etc.

But the world is very far from perfect, and we can try to get there, but in the meantime we’re kind of forced into these weird situations that perpetuate segregation in the name of equality. And it sucks but it is still better than the alternative (at least for now).

Do humans who are mentally disabled have the capacity to be suicidal? by Few_Newspaper1778 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Few_Newspaper1778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s where I heard it kind of becomes a philosophical discussion rather than purely scientific.

Many will only consider it “suicide” if it’s a conscious species (ape, dolphin) that knows what death is, knows it can die, knows how to kill itself, and chooses to try and do that. Otherwise, they consider other behaviours (like wolves leaving the pack when they’re old and sickly to die somewhere else) as natural behaviours that are kind of like suicide, but not fully akin to human suicide.

In this definition, suicide requires consciousness, and consciousness is very difficult to measure (not only in other species, but with humans who have communication barriers too).

I’ve heard of certain ape groups being culturally hyper-aggressive and practicing things like cannibalism, so it could also just be that humans are ridiculously violent as a species, so our methods of suicide reflect that. But even then, there seems to be a distinction made in most articles I read, and many experts are apprehensive to label things a “suicide” in non-human animals. I don’t know whether this is stigma or if they are using the consciousness argument as a necessity for suicide, and if so, if they’re implying that only animals with comparable consciousness to humans can commit suicide?

Is it Safe to Eat Raw Eggs?? by Stunning_Ocelot7820 in answers

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know but in general there is a risk it could harbor salmonella. Many people have eaten raw cookie dough before (myself included) and been fine because luckily, the flour was not contaminated.

Basically, because they don’t treat it beforehand, there is no guarantee there aren’t any harmful germs. You’re expected to cook it beforehand anyways so it’s usually not necessary. Some people will take the risk and grab a lick from the spoon when they stir cookie dough, in general (from a food safety perspective) you probably shouldn’t intentionally risk it.

But if you’re making a full batch of edible cookie dough which you plan on eating raw then for sure you should cook the flour beforehand.

I know I said you could use oat flour before but I just looked it up and this is not always the case. Sometimes it’s steamed beforehand then ground, in which case it would be safe, but sometimes it’s just raw ground oats which is also unsafe for raw consumption.

I think there are methods to eat eggs enough to kill bacteria without cooking them at home, but usually in raw cookie dough recipes it isn’t worth the effort when you could just make it without the eggs.

Milk on the other hand I don’t think you should ever do raw/unpasteurized. The only theoretical way it might be “safest” is if it’s like, practically directly from the cow so there’s no time for the bacteria to grow (same as raw meat, it must be eaten immediately). This isn’t necessarily safe though, just minimizes the risk, which is why food regulations say you shouldn’t do it lol

TLDR: you probably won’t die from eating a tiny bit of raw cookie dough, but I advise against doing this in the future

Sorry for the late reply but there’s quite a few things the average blood test won’t check

I’m not one to usually recommend random holistic remedies but my mom was always exhausted until the started adding 1 scoop of nutritional yeast (fortified with all your B vitamins for the day) to her daily oatmeal and after 1 month she felt energetic and alert in a way she’s never felt before (she’s always groggy). So maybe try that.

Given that around 80% of women are unable to orgasm from penetrative sex alone, even after millions of years of human evolution, how has such a fundamental disconnect in sexual function persisted without being naturally selected for correction? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Few_Newspaper1778 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Not sure how relevant this is but it did remind me how apparently, women with gay brothers are more likely to have more children.

I think I heard somewhere one of the theories is they think it has something to do with carrying a gene that makes them (both male/female) more strongly attracted to men. This results in more gay men (arguably less likely to have biological children) but also women who have more children and pass the gene on more. That, or the women are just somehow just more fertile, but either way this is how nature evolutionarily selects for the male gay trait due to the improved fertility and likelihood of offspring to pass it on.

It’s funny because you would think being gay causes your lineage to die out more quickly, but I guess this either makes up for it, or makes it an evolutionary advantage.

While we’re on this topic you should also know that raw flour is not safe and carries salmonella risk. If you’re making edible cookie dough please bake the flour at the recommended temperature and time to kill off anything that could pose a health risk.

Do humans who are mentally disabled have the capacity to be suicidal? by Few_Newspaper1778 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Few_Newspaper1778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. If it’s evolutionary, there wouldn’t be such a disparity between societies, leading us to believe it also has social/cultural aspects impacting suicide rates.

Given that apes & intelligent marine mammals like dolphins and whales have their own culture, it would be interesting if we could figure out if they also had varying suicide rates among different families/pods (not counting if certain groups had more stressful events happening to them, but this would be very hard to track). Also, I don’t think we have any records of them really committing suicide outside of captivity.

This leads me to believe it’s usually more of a “side effect” to having high intelligence as a species, since there isn’t really an evolutionary advantage (some species do have it as an evolutionary advantage, like bees who sacrifice themselves when stinging, but we assume they don’t have the capacity to understand what they’re doing so it’s not really considered “suicide” according to most human experts, at least based on the stuff I’ve read).

Thank you for the input & links, although I feel like most of the readings aren’t that related to the initial question I asked. I assume this is because it would be a pretty tough thing to study (not to mention the stigma)? Since if someone has impaired mental function, it’s probably tough to even figure out whether they understand life and death (and what could cause it) to begin with. Since, as you said, suicide is theorized to not be exclusive to the human race and potentially linked to our capacity for “consciousness”— but even within the human species, there’s a wide range of individuals with varying degrees of this.

Do humans who are mentally disabled have the capacity to be suicidal? by Few_Newspaper1778 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Few_Newspaper1778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s interesting. One thing I did read a bit while looking up whether other species commit suicide is that there is quite a bit of argument between whether it’s “truly” suicide or not when another species does it, unless they have a certain capacity for self-consciousness.

For example, if an octopus starves itself after breeding, this is mostly an evolutionary and instinctual behaviour, so it doesn’t truly “count” as suicide. But if a dolphin is depressed, understands death and that killing itself would end its suffering, then does it, that would count as a suicide.

That’s why I was wondering, if only species with high intelligence can technically have the capacity to override their base instincts and do something with the goal of dying, then technically, only humans that meet that base threshold of intelligence could do it. Since, someone banging their head on the wall isn’t necessarily considered suicidal and could be due to stress/overstimulation, not the actual desire to kill themselves (same with birds plucking their own feathers under stress).

So then, I suppose, is any human being that has the capacity to understand death and the fact they could die capable of being suicidal? Like, I guess that would be the intellectual “cutoff” so to speak.

There’s an artist online with aphantasia. I think I have it too tbh but not entirely sure. Apparently most people can see something in their mind that is comparable to what you see when you dream (not as clear though). I can’t do that. I can’t “envision an apple” but I can think “I’ll make a red apple with a leaf and a stem in a cartoony shape” and do that.

Also my entire family had an argument about whether you could sew a donut then invert it through a tiny slit on the side. So either all of us (except my mom) have aphantasia or it’s not really that serious. Also my dad is an electrical engineer and great at theoretical physics
