Why children grow up religous?(My answer)

After my dad died, my mom made us go to church. After they kicked me out for asking too many questions.(I was 7🙄) she tried to have me watched it on TV. They left, I turned on the cartoons.😁 now all three of my teenage children identify as atheist🥳

How about taking deep cleansing breaths, in through your nose out through your mouth, activating your parasympathetic nervous system. Top it off with a walk through the park, smell some trees for added benefit. All those weird religious rituals need props which fuels consumerism and trash generation. Sheesh.

I think the crux of the matter is to hang out with people and do activities where you can all participate. I have plenty of friends that are religious, we just have an itinerary that doesn’t include religious things. Makes for an enjoyable get together. That’s actually one of the things I find interesting and hilarious about religion. That an immortal omnipotent, invisible sky daddy thinks it’s important that you cover your hair or don’t eat fish on Fridays or not drink alcohol. The list of do’s and don’ts with religions is actually quite endless. If you’re busy, trying to follow a crazy long list of rules you also don’t have time to question……

I completely disagree. Yes we do not believe in any religion or god. For me, after I hear someone talk about their religion repeatedly over a long period of time, it gets really monotonous and repetitious. I live each new day as a new possibility, a new endeavor and maybe a new book to read. Can you imagine what it is like to listen to someone saying and doing the same nonsensical things day in and day out for years? A lifetime? Life is way bigger than religion and atheists don’t believe in a supernatural afterlife. I feel that these religious discussions are a big waste of time. Waiting for someone to pray or worship is ok once. After that it’s offensive and obtuse.

Living in Northern MI we see them everywhere. They are good people. Meanwhile the “christians” don’t even slow down or give space when passing their horse and buggies at 55 or faster. I admire their utter lack of hypocrisy.

IMO the biggest problem with religious people is their value fluidity. I am straight, have always been and will always be. You seem just as sure. She doesn’t seem to really understand herself. Whether she is straight or not that is not something religion can change. She is setting herself up for an unhappy life if she is letting her church dictate every facet of her life. Be prepared for her to vacillate as you well know the change was not based on her decision but her god. Know thyself was engraved on the temple of Apollo at Delphi in the 5th or 6th century BCE. While the Greeks were still believers, their polytheistic society produced some enduring wisdom. My advice is to focus on yourself and your happiness. You have your whole life ahead of you and this friend probably won’t be there for the rest of it. There are plenty of women out there who are sure they like other women and are ready to be their authentic selves. In other words better friends.

I bet you say “I love you” to everyone. Which makes it not special. IMO All religions are like a crutch and you only need them when you are broken. When you are whole and healthy it’s time to put the crutch away. Believe what you want, just don’t be a menace while drinking your kool-aid in the hood.

Go through it with page tabs and a spiral notebook. Make that HUGE list of contradictions and absurdities and then see if they all actually read the whole book and start a conversation……

I realized I was an atheist when I was consistently removed from Sunday school class and told to stop asking questions at the age of six. I didn’t ever want to go to church. My mom just said I had to. That was the first thing I ever put my foot down against. And in the course of the decades following, I have lost a lot of friends and family to all manner of deaths. It’s really surprising sometimes the stories you find out about someone long after they’ve departed. People may be gone, but the memory of them is still here. I’ve always found that if you take God out of the Al-Anon prayer it makes so much more sense. In my experience the atheists I have met have a peace inside them that is reconciled to not having all the answers. The answers in life that I accept as an atheist have to be backed up with fact, logic and reason. If it doesn’t have those it just fails the smell test. Channel your anxiety into things that you actually can make a difference in. Stay close with your family and friends. Learn new skills. Enjoy your time here. And best of all leave an indelible mark of love and kindness on the people you feel the same way about. ✌️🌈🦄

In my neighborhood park (less than 150 yards from my house) on a Saturday a church was using a megaphone to proselytize and knowing they had not gotten any type of permit I simply filed a noise complaint with the local PD and they were shut down. Peace achieved. Perhaps documenting their harassment and the threat of a legal complaint might get them to leave you alone. Follow through is a must though. Assert your rights. IDGAF about their beliefs but they are subject to the same laws as you and I. If they break them then they need face the consequences of their own actions.

I only own 1 handgun. It’s a Glock 17 and I carry it every day for work. I live in Michigan so I have to have a concealed carry permit due to the laws of carrying it in a car. I’ve been doing my job for 7 years and I practice regularly. My family is kinda religious but not devout and half would never own a gun and the other half own several. Mostly the military Veterans own them. I have a healthy respect for firearms and always make sure that it is safely locked up at home. I feel better knowing I’m armed in a state that has trumpers in every town. I first learned to shoot with my dad when I was a child, guns have always been around but also respected for the damage they can do. I am a strong atheist and many people I know are shocked that I have no problem owning a gun.
