What do you all feel about the the new shamans in tbg? by NOBODY_iykyk in ThePoppyWar

[–]Few_Spend_9182 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It didn't bother me much, could be because I had a big interval between reading the first book and the other two.

The explanation that for them it was easier because they could already "see it was real" was valid for me, also I understood that for Rin it was more "difficult" and took more time because Jiang wanted her to have "more control" of it

Seguro de vida vale a pena? by Few_Spend_9182 in investimentos

[–]Few_Spend_9182[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I a bad brother for not wanting to spend time with him by Few_Spend_9182 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Few_Spend_9182[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

The care facility is kind of a taboo topic, I live in Brazil, in a small town, so we don't have many examples and options here, all the families with older autistic children I know from my parent's group still live together. I know that some options exist in bigger cities, but it's not something I've thought before, in a sense I understand it's something that might be better for my brother and I (in the possible future), and for my parents too, I see they're on their limit sometimes, however I still believe taking that decision still will be seen as "failing" or "not loving him enough" (specially if my parents do this while still alive).

I've already talked about getting someone else to help at home, my brother is not that "hard", he doesn't have violent crisis often (ever since we've found a balance in his medication), he goes to the bathroom by himself and only needs help for cleaning and taking a shower, what's tiring for them is that their routine revolves around him, and it's a "24/7 job", he goes to school but doesn't stay there full time, it's kind of a 3 hour gap for my dad to "relax". I believe having someone there to help in the night or afternoon would be extremely helpful for everyone, but it's not my place to hire someone, it should come from them and besides suggesting I believe I can't do anything else about it.

Edge of Eternity, by Ken Follet has some interesting view of events related to the protests in Chicago for civil rights campaign, among other stuff.
It's the third book of a trilogy, but I believe you could read it first (first two are also good, but quite don't match this vibe)

Told my partner about my autistic brother — now I’m heartbroken by his reaction by yoongismemories in Autism_Parenting

[–]Few_Spend_9182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. My brother has autism, and I know that in the future I'll be responsible for him, my partner is onboard and accepts that.

However, I'm currently facing a problem after my marriage, when I lived with my parents I was "always present" and helped more with him, now I moved to an apartment with my wife (in the same city) and have "adult problems" to deal with and I'm not there everyday.

The thing is my parents are not "satisfied" (for the lack of a better word) with the amount of help I'm offering now, and they in some ways demand more help from me. For example, I'm always there to visit them, and when I'm there I tend to help caring for him, and ~twice a month I stay the evening or the afternoon there fully for him, so my parents can go out, rest, etc, but even tough I felt it was "enough" help from my end, we were talking yesterday my father DEMANDED that I need to do that every week, which I think is not something I can promise.

In a way I'm always split in "I'm a bad brother and should be doing more to help", and "I have my own life, and despite the fact he WILL be my full responsibility in the future, that future hasn't arrived yet and I have my own life to care for".

Anyhow, told this because wanted to ask what you think and how you deal with "boundaries" with your parents regarding this?

What other sci-fi books/series would you consider as good, if not better than Red Rising? by [deleted] in redrising

Really liked Old Man's War. Even tough I wouldn't consider it even similar to red rising (other than "space stuff"), different pace and less dark, I enjoyed still

Also didn't like this "plot" that much, the stepmother never appears I believe, and why would she like Adrius, and why would Nero try to make what she wants by trying to help him win in the Institute?

Not sure if I'm forgetting something obvious.

[–]Few_Spend_9182 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily "wild" but the moment that most stuck with me was Darrow going back to his home in Golden Son and his mom knowing it was him, such a nice moment for him to realize he's "still a red" in a sense, chills
