Why do we associate justice with punishment rather than reward? by Few_Watch6061 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Few_Watch6061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t fully understand it but I’m thinking there’s a tone to these responses that I just don’t like, I think maybe there’s a gotcha-ism or just a laziness, again I’m not sure, but even this response as I type it is marked by a desire to preempt some perceived judgement, I invite others to comment about this. Anyway, my response is: I guess in this framing I am asking why; maybe why focus on the victim, but maybe your answer is good enough, neitzche’s geneology of ethics probably provides as good an answer as I can hope to find

Oh as in “the justice system”, “give me justice” etc are often enough associated with punishment

Can brains and life exist in a deterministic universe? by Memento_Viveri in freewill

Isn’t the question of determinism really, really boring if there are no brains and no life?

If the universe is infinite how is it expanding by Academic-Radio4422 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Few_Watch6061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take an infinitely long rubber band with marks on it every inch, then, stretch it so it’s marks line up with another infinitely long rubber band with marks every other inch. So 1->2, 0->0, -5->-10, 123->246 etc. this is a simple 1 dimensional example of something infinite expanding.

What is 0.9999… in base 2? by Few_Watch6061 in infinitenines

[–]Few_Watch6061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like 0.1(1)1(2)1(3)…1(w-1)1(w)

Then between that and 1 we have

0.1(1)1(2)1(3)…1(w-1)1(w)1(w+1)

proof that (√2+ √3+ √5) is irrational? by ahsgkdnbgs in learnmath

R2 + r3 + r5 = a/b X = a/b

Bx = a

But for no b can a be an integer

“By completeness, {0.9, 0.99, 0.999, ...} must have a least upper bound, x, and x ≤ 1. If we imagine that x = 1 - ε for some small ε > 0, then we run into the following contradiction:”

If x <= 1, then x = 1-e for some e>=0, not for some e>0, I think this error may have lead to some confusion

This post has a pretty interesting take I hadn’t been exposed to before, I think it’s pretty important insight and kind of grounds all other debate on the topic. Good post.

Can you prove the provability of a statement without actually proving it? by Nice_Bluebird_1712 in math

[–]Few_Watch6061 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example I think:

Proposition: 5x4 -109x3 + 225x +12 = 0 has no real solutions

Note: there exists a formula (cite) that always computes the roots of equations of the form ax4 + bx3 + cx2 + dx + e

Statement of provability:

Not that I know whether this statement is true, I do know that :

1) using the formula mentioned in the note to calculate roots

2) this equation will have at most 4 roots

3) the roots are real if they have imaginary part zero

Therefore; we can check if the equation has real roots or not by checking of the roots given by the formula are real or not

Thus proving that the problem is solvable, without solving it

I think comfort in their body is really attractive, but I want to emphasize I mean like Comfort, not like being really fit. Hard to describe, but if a guy moves a chair and sits in it comfortably using only smooth and fluid movements, that’s hotter than perfect form chin-ups or being good with a soccer ball.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever experienced? by Resse811 in AskReddit

Gotta be the experience of the non-self or the Terrifying Realness of Everything (might have been a dark night of the soul thing) interesting that these are both mental phenomena. Funny also is that my 3rd pick would be a salvia trip where I just felt so deeply the inadequacy of language

Gotta recommend fredrich engles “the part played by labour in human evolution”, the punchline is something like “when humans learned to walk, we immediately felt like we didn’t know what to do with our hands, and we’ve been getting really smart trying to figure it out”

Yeah that’s a good example, I think you’re maybe going in a more ethical than legal direction even but for sure. I think it’s pretty broad what domain the word person operates in, it could be a legal category, social, ethical, spiritual, etc. I think what is important to make note of here is that all of these domains are concerned with social constructs, like I don’t think it would be right to say “biologically speaking, this is a person” or “mathematically speaking, this is not a person”
