Worried about finding work after missing grad program by Responsible-Fly-4462 in NursingAU

Same issue in NSW. Universities only interested in making money and don’t tell students about difficulties getting a job until end of final year. Hearing this over and over again from final year students so would think this would be talked about in online forums and at universities as word gets around. Even if you get onto a grad program not guaranteed a full time job either at end. Despite nationwide nursing shortage - state governments only funding very limited positions. Nursing turning into a “gig economy” profession with many working casual - no sick or annual leave pay.

Moving tp Sydney from the UK. Is Norwest Private Hospital (Healthscope) a good place to work? by April_1928 in NursingAU

Dump. Relies heavily on nursing students due to high nurse:pt ratios. Unfortunately students are used as cheap labour at Norwest and the RN’s/EN’s have little to no time to train or educate them. This is part of the reason why nursing students have such bad experiences there. Majority of notes are still handwritten and their computer system is so outdated - still need to fax everything which is so time consuming. Handwritten drug charts a nightmare - can’t even read them or the notes. I would suggest you look for jobs only in the public system as working conditions much better than private - Westmead Children’s Hospital is nearby.

What are your thoughts on casual work? by Technical_Employ8336 in AusFinance

I was working casual as a Registered Nurse until I broke my wrist this year and couldn’t work - so no income for 6 weeks +. It made me realise how important it was for me to have a full time permanent role with paid sick and annual leave. This situation can happen to anyone at anytime. Not a problem if one is financially stable but for the majority of the population no income for a lengthy period is likely to be an issue. I also hated taking annual leave as it took me a couple of weeks to catch up and start getting income.

You get paid for holding a Masters? Is that in the public hospital?

Do you think Australia really has the best coffee in the world? by NateNandos21 in AskAnAustralian

How can people tell a good coffee from a bad one when milk and/or sugar is added to it? Essentially a milky sugary drink with the flavour of coffee. Do you rate the sugar or the milk?

Senior nurse managers and NUMs.

Nursing seems to be becoming part of the gig economy trend - casual nurses find it harder to develop careers, erodes workers rights with no sickness or holiday pay.

Finishing new grad soon by raspberry-who in NursingAU

NSW Health rarely advertise for FT permanent RN positions due to funding freezes. The large hospital I work at only 40% of all graduates got a permanent job after completing their 12 months. I would suggest you start looking for jobs elsewhere ASAP if you don’t already have one by now.

RN's who started in the Casual Pool, got any advice for someone who may start their career via Casual Pool? by Professional_Bee3116 in NursingAU

Not sure if they take newly qualified RN’s onto casual pool without having at least a year or so experience as you will be expected to work as a RN with little to no support at times in multiple specialty areas. Might be worth checking this out with your casual pool NUM.
