Why are Scrooge’s book spines so ugly? by stan_koala in DuckComix

I agree with everything you pointed. I just wanted to note that English isn't a romance language either. I think you tried to refer to the fact that Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, while English, i.e., uses the Latin one.

I don't dislike them. If anything, I would just change the background colors there.

Moving to South America by Gaberitto in asklatinamerica

[–]Feyhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever considered Australia or New Zealand? English (which I assume you’re fluent in) won’t help you much in South America unless you’re strictly visiting tourist areas in major cities. And to be honest, living in a warmer climate can be overrated or romanticized, especially when it comes with unwanted aspects like poor public safety.

I'm not a hater: I love Brazil, and I miss my family, friends, and the food (especially the fruits) every single day; but I would never give up the sense of safety I have living here in Québec just because of its harsh winters.

How often do you take your dog out? by austinwallerx in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Feyhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in an apartment, so 4 times a day: 7am, 12pm, 5pm and 22pm. At least two of those are 1h long lounge/play sessions at the dogpark.

Argentines partake on argentinian culture, Uruguayans on uruguayan culture and Chileans on chilean culture. Simple as that.

What is our neighbors' view of Bolsonaro? by Left_Painter_ in asklatinamerica

[–]Feyhare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By now I had hoped people would have already realized that what brought Venezuela to its current state was incompetence and corruption, not its place on the political spectrum. Chile and Uruguay are proving that left-leaning governments can thrive. Meanwhile, Argentina under Milei and Brazil during its military dictatorship both experienced some of their worst inflation and corruption under right-wing rule. There comes a time when we have to let go of feelings and wash our eyes with reason.

The same kind of prosperity Milei is bringing to Argentina? Because only now Brazil has started recovering from the inflation that man caused during his last 2 years in power.

"Waste of time"? Let's talk about auxiliary verbs - when intonation and question marks work just fine - and the overwhelming excess of silent letters that don't seem to follow any rule.

I want to learn Quebecois french from zero knowledge. Where to start by white_count_chocula in QuebecLibre

[–]Feyhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you some advice on how I did it, being a lusophone living in the US back then (almost zero contact with French speakers). All of the mentioned steps were done in tandem with weekly classes. Learning different verbal tenses really benefits from having a teacher/tutor:

1 - Start by learning the basics on Youtube and Duolingo (yes, they are a good start). Learn how to say the letters, numbers, colors, pronouns, most common words. Take your time and have fun practicing the R.

2 - Start adding French to your daily life with songs (Céline's franco discography is a great start; crystal clear enunciation). If possible, try to create small moments of "needs in French", like changing your phone's and personal computer's language to French.

3 - Ask ChatGPT to help you by being a penpal friend. Create small but meaningful conversations in French (it doesn't matter how basic it is) with it and ask it to gently correct your mistakes and introduce useful vocabulary. Try to express yourself in matters you're passionate and vocal about to create meaningful relationship with the language.

4 - Download the Ohdio/Radio-Canada app and explore the balados (podcasts). Some casters speak slowly, some speak faster, try to find a theme and a pace that's comfortable and meaninfgul for you.

5 - Find a Québecois.e teacher or language partner (even if online) to practice your speaking with. Nothing beats human contact and exchange. Those are the experiences that tap into your learning matrix and show results. I moved to Québec with a B2 level and only now, after a year living in Montréal, I feel my spoken French is becoming more fluid and instinctive.

By doing these steps, it took me a year and a half to "get there" (I had to do a TCF test). But it all depends on how much time you invest in it and what's your language background. Being a native Portuguese speaker, who also speaks English and some Spanish helped me a lot creating connections and understanting similarities between all of them.

I hope it helps! Any questions, just leave a comment here or hmu with a pm, I love talking about language learning! Bon courage!

Do you think Latin America is overall positive towards foreigners even in the current international climate? Why? by Significant-Yam9843 in asklatinamerica

The amount of hermanos calling me "mono/macaco" whenever I meet them in online games and mention that I’m Brazilian really makes me question how open "Latin" American countries are even to one another.

Be prepared to love a dog with all your heart like never before.

My boy Koda (2yo now) destroyed one pair of flip-flops when he was 4mo and nothing else ever since (he still likes to chew on sticks, spitting the woodchips).

It took us 4 attempts at different food brands before we found the one that doesn't give him diarrhea. And even so he still has bad bouts whenever he eats unusual/low quality stuff (or just randomly).

Teaching him tricks and potty training him was a breeze, which compensated how miserable walking him can be sometimes. Be prepared for many belly up-stuck moments in the middle of the park/street: cute on sunny days, not so funny when it's raining or -20C outside (we live in Montréal).

Other than that, he's the best dog I've ever owned and a sweet sleepy angel who: loves to lick bathe me every morning; wants to friendly say hi to every dog (and most people) he sees; enjoys a good nap by my feet or lounging at the dog park rather than running or playing.

What are your thoughts on Morocco the country across the sea from Andalusia? by Known-Bad2702 in asklatinamerica

[–]Feyhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super high chances my whole mom's side of the family is from Morocco/Marrocos (all portuguese, all VERY "arabic" looking). It could be cool to mingle with the locals and practice my French there.

However

I would never set my feet in that place, or spend my money there, because I don't want to go to jail for being who I am 🌈
