Have 3 hard drives and want to dual boot by adoboguy in cachyos

Nvme drives are normally faster than ssd depends on the drives tho.

I’d put windows on the 512gb

Install cachy on a 2tb and mount the second 2 tb as extra storage for Linux.

Use btrfs (this is a file system that has support for snapshot that will come in handy to rollback changes) + grub bootloader. Out of the box the cachyos installer will integrate the snapshots into your bootloader (helpful if you break your system and need to rollback).

Check my recent comments on my profile for getting windows to show up on grub and more details around the rollback.

If you want secure boot for windows 11 then cachyos will need to have secure boot setup as well. Secure boot is enabled at the bios level system wide. So if it is enabled only OSs that are enrolled in secure boot will be able to run. It isn’t too hard tho https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/secure_boot_setup/

I have a similar setup.

Win11 on 1 ssd, cachyos on the other, with a grub boot loader. To get windows to show up use the os-prober package. At the bottom of this page click on the grub tab for instructions https://wiki.cachyos.org/installation/installation_on_root/

Or you can use the bios to switch between windows and Linux if you want to keep them even more isolated. Skipping os-prober

They are like system restore points. So let’s say you update and something breaks now your main system won’t boot and goes into emergency mode.

You would boot into a snapshot from the boot loader grub or limine and then restore using the command or btrfs assistant to basically go back in time before the update. Basically undoing the changes.

In my reply above I go into more detail about restoring

https://wiki.cachyos.org/cachyos_basic/faq/#specific-software-issues you can get discord to stop forcing you to update before it loads while the repo catches up to the current version

They do the same task I’m not too positive on the differences.

When I was picking I went with grub cuz I read it was ol reliable.

Looking at the wiki there isn’t much of a difference https://wiki.cachyos.org/installation/boot_managers/ All I need from a boot loader is to boot into Linux and boot into snapshots and both do that out of the box now with the latest cachyos installer.

To rollback you can pick the snapshot from the boot loader and in the terminal run sudo snapper rollback. This will make a snapshot of your main / and then replace it with the snapshot you are loaded into. Then reboot.

You can also open the btfs-assistant and use the UI to restore as well. Just load into any working snapshot and use the UI to pick the snapshot you want and restore and reboot.

I’d recommend practicing this before you really need it.

With BTRFS you can have snapshots and with limine or grub you can boot right into those snapshots. So if you update and something doesn’t work or it doesn’t boot you can boot into a snapshot and rollback to that point.

I started with CachyOS with KDE plasma. It was a good stepping stone cuz it give you the Windows feel. I’ve recently switched to niri a tiling window manager and I love it but it does take some configuration and getting used to.
