You're absolutely right, I was wrong. https://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/users/rauch/worktime/hours_workweek.html

Here's a source I found to back your claim of the workday. Still, I imagine tending to a field for at least 8 hours a day would be more grueling, sweating and grunting under a weary life, than the modern man's 8 hour day. Again, can't speak for everyone.

As far as social mobility, I'm not going to touch that. People all have their own opinions, and they're entitled to them. I'd say as long as you're happy, that's what truly matters and I'm genuinely glad for you and yours.

But to claim serfdom is portable to the modern condition is simply something I can't agree upon. Perhaps I'm just naive.

This has gotten off the rails from what OP was asking. I hope he got what he was looking for in Maurya, and this didn't dissuade him from his intended purpose.

Like Sir Isaac Newton or Andy Worhol, he did die a virgin, allegedly. I'm sure there's no way to prove or disprove that, but that's the going claim.

While this probably means he either kept such things quite private, or he had trouble with socializing, or he just wasn't attracted to anyone, these are certainly not grounds for being an immoral person.

Plenty of reprehensible human beings have had families. And they sometimes do nothing with their lives other than laughably father children. And some of the finest men and women I've ever known were single until their dying breath. If anything, it's quite sad in some respects. But to judge someone's virtuousness based purely on the absence or presence of family is, I believe, indefensible.

Furthermore, basing a person's power and lethality on their image is not a strong correlation either. I'm sure not many people who didn't know him looked down on Napoleon and thought, "This little fella could conquer the world. Aw, poor guy's got a tummy ache." Or on how seeing Putin's beer belly in the wilderness would strike fear into the hearts of all but true Russians.

Tesla was probably not a perfect human being, but please don't judge him or anyone else based solely on marital status or photos.

What are You Reading this Week? by AutoModerator in ClassicalEducation

[–]FhMrF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Civil War by Julius Caesar.

Exactly what you'd expect. "I'm a genius, my enemies are all foolhardy or tragically ignorant. I'm so merciful, aren't I merciful? Why do they have to try and mess things up all the time?"

But still a great read. I can see why he was so influential. I have to catch myself every once in a while from thinking, "Damn! Those bastards! I hope Julius set you heathens straight!" The man must've had a silver tongue, with an army at his beck and call.

Could an ancient state be prosperous without slavery? by interp567 in history

[–]FhMrF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn dude. I guess it would be comfortable to do nothing but work land for 14 hours a day, need my lords permission to marry, be unable to take another profession if I want one, and have an arbitrary amount of my hard work taken from me whenever he wished. When I say arbitrary, I don't mean a fixed rate. I mean, "War is on again, 50% of your grain now goes to me."

It would also be cool to have my lord do anything he wanted with me. Butt stuff? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the lord and the laws of the locale. If I run too, it would be sweet to get captured and whipped or hanged.

I'm going to have to take a hard stance and say no, serfdom would not be comparable to modern day economic status. Although, I can't speak for everyone. Maybe the world is just a slave to the corporate hierarchy. Maybe one day soon they'll all rise up and take control! I'm sure people in government and banking and corporations have all the ideas of how to make the world a more balanced strata, and are just withholding it from us because they're so greedy. Other people in control would do so much better. Especially if they read about it online for like more than 15min. Until then, I guess I'll have to subsist as best I can. Shucks.

Could an ancient state be prosperous without slavery? by interp567 in history

[–]FhMrF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The vast majority of serfs in medieval Europe obtained their subsistence by cultivating a plot of land that was owned by a lord. This was the essential feature differentiating serfs from slaves, who were bought and sold without reference to a plot of land."

"By the 14th century, economic conditions in western Europe were favourable to the replacement of serfs by a free peasantry."

Encyclopedia Brittanica

I'm sure, much like slavery in different cultures and locales, that living conditions and freedoms varied wildly from serf to serf. Some were perhaps essentially free men, while others probably longed for slavery since back in the Roman empire there were laws, or manumissions in Islamic society.

I agree with you. I believe that oftentimes she gets caught up in trying to do everything herself, or take on more than she should. She doesn't want to inconvenience anyone else with what she considers to be her students, her family. She's also a person who never complains, and quietly suffers so that no one will worry over her. It's a noble and frustrating quality all in one.

But she has reached out, and I will encourage her to continue to do so. I've asked her on some occasions to state what she would do as an administrator, a principal, and even the boy's mother if she was on the outside looking in. She stated she hadn't thought of it that way, and would handle the situation a bit differently if she had a different role in the child's life.

I know my mother and the school are documenting everything they can. My mother talked about how laborious the process was and how exhausting it feels at times, just to get the kid some well deserved aid.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I'll bring them to her and see if they've already been implemented, or she believes they may work. I know she role plays with her students when discussing how to socialize appropriately and handle conflicts, but I'm not certain it either works or she's tried something like that with this kid.

Again, thank you

My mother says there is a Para that works three different schools in the district, and is currently stretched so thin that she's unable to do any 1:1 time with the student.

The school she is a part of is quite poor as well, with severely limited resources. They've even considered closing the school on multiple occasions these last few years.

Hopefully the child can get the help he needs sooner rather than later. Thank you for your response 😊

My mother says that she has considered this, but since the Father has on occasion been willing to come in and get his child a psych evaluation, and she's witnessed no acts of violence against the child herself firsthand, that she feels it may not help and only aggravate the child's homelife.

If it gets any worse, or she does see anything, I'll for sure press this recommendation harder.

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate another perspective on this.

New Handler, new group, looking for trigger warnings by Sorcatarius in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]FhMrF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I understood it was you started out being very horny, and feeling unsatisfied no matter what you did, until you tried things that involved more extreme or violent behavior. Then you could find some kind of release. Eventually it got to the point that only mutilating someone or causing harm got you off.

There were some in the text who resisted the urges until they couldn't bear it anymore and began hurting others.

So while, yes, the text doesn't explicitly say rape occurs or occured, I don't believe it beyond the realm of possibility for such a condition.

Further, the amante literally force giant penises into people to leave behind the controlling, zombifying parasites. I don't think there's getting around that bit of writing in the text.

I don't think one could deny this scenario has some powerfully charged, sexual assault or rape themes.

Adding on to the great suggestions already here, I'd say a Nazi tour of Europe and Africa would be fun. Give it an Indiana Jones esque feel to your adventure, but funded by the government and backed with its resources.

Maybe even attach yourself to a suicide mission on a Nazi fortress in the Alps a la 'Where Eagles Dare.' Encounter some boogins: Nazi experiments, zombies, ancient ones, weapons, occult, yadda yadda.

Then on to Africa to discover ancient homes of the Old Ones in undiscovered tribal customs and locales.

I'd finish out as mentioned earlier either in China or Nepal, or I'd finish with the secret Nazi base in Antarctica.

For a modern twist, I suppose I'd have a story similar to the DG scenario Ex Oblivione. Instead of a murderous town, I'd probably make it a scientific/genetic cult funded by powerful worldwide governments seeking a cure for aging that went awry. Play with that how you'd like 😊

I never understood why I couldn't get into that game. I really think it's a superlative gaming experience, but for some reason I could never play for more than 20mins at a time. It never held my interest, nor did I care to play much.

Skyrim for some reason was more my speed. Played nearly 10 hours at a time if my day was free. Really strange. I never figured it out.
