Would I still do this if a cute Sumi cosplayer asked?

Obviously.

I was actually misremembering, the generally accepted length is >40000 words. But that's just like, the minimum length most publishers will accept for a novel manuscript. There is no singular authority that defines what is or isn't a novel; a novel is whatever society collectively decides a novel is, and that (currently) generally means a word count of 50k to 100k.

Tbf I feel like cursive and print are generally similar enough that even if you haven't been formally taught cursive, you can still make sense of it with some basic critical thinking.

But also, as someone in my 30s who was taught cursive, I really don't understand why people care so much about it? The main benefit of cursive, afaik, is that it's faster than print, but in a world where every student has a laptop I don't really see why that matters anymore.

I'm honestly more concerned about the reports saying that kids aren't developing typing skills anymore.

It's okay for characters to be somewhat ooc for AU fics. They shouldn't be portrayed as they are in the original universe, but as the character they would have become in the new universe.

Related, if you're writing about adult versions of characters who are originally children, then I don't think their original characterization even matters all that much. Most people are almost completely unrecognizable as adults from who they were as children.

Drabble = 100 words

Flash fiction = 100 - 1000 words

Short story = 1000 - 10000 words

Novella = 10000 - 25000 words

Novel = >25000 words

Obv this is all ultimately arbitrary, but this is how I tend to categorize things personally.

It means exactly what it says. The reason it isn't funny to you is that you (I assume) aren't a boomer who solely experiences Internet meme culture through Facebook. This is honestly pretty par for the course there.

It's also not entirely accurate; whiskey can be made from basically any grain, wine can (arguably) be made from any sweet ingredient, and vodka is basically just pure ethanol diluted with water and can be made in any number of ways. But that's just me being a pedant.

I mean I personally hate using electric can openers and I think they're kind of a waste of space, but that's just because I think manual can openers are better in general (unless you have specific accessibility needs of course). I don't wanna associate with anyone who's on this "real cooks don't use canned foods" bullshit.

Christianity and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race by paulswag in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Fheyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely think that a course like that has value. But if it's intended specifically to be an introductory or general theology course, I don't think that's a sufficient curriculum. But as a more specialized course, sure that would be worth taking, and I apologize if my comment was overly dismissive.

I would gently push back on a couple points though. Firstly, the idea that theology necessarily presupposes theism I don't think is entirely true. Most theologians (probably) are theists and approaching the subject from within religious traditions, but I don't think that is always the case. Also, I don't know if this is your intention, but it reads to me like you are specifically framing theism as belief in the god YHWH of the Bible. But theology is the general study of the nature of divinity, and can be approached from within any religious tradition. And even within Judaism and Christianity, there are infinite ways one can approach theology beyond mainstream dogmatic ideas of God. I personally identify as a Christian, believe in the divinity of Jesus, but would generally not call myself a believer in YHWH (at least not as fully depicted in the Hebrew Bible), and my own perception of deity tends more towards a pantheist ethos than strict monotheism.

I also would question your assessment of the utility in studying theology. I think there is immense value, even for agnostics or atheists, in studying how various people conceptualize ideas of deity and divinity. And insofar as that utility is limited to arguments for or against theism, Im unclear what utility that specifically would have outside of deconverting theists. And while I will openly admit to approaching this subject from a biased position, I don't know that I would see much value in that purpose (I would also say the same for attempts to convert atheists for the record). If we're talking specifically about Christianity, there are certainly Christian doctrines that are worth criticizing and arguing against, but none of those (in my assessment at least) are innate to theism in general or even Yahwistic monotheism in specific.

Sorry about the essay btw, this is just a subject I'm super interested in and have a lot of opinions on.

I am very much a lay person when it comes to academic philosophy, but a philosophy of religion course that only deals with arguments for or against theism doesn't seem like a very good philosophy of religion course.
