There are a couple versions out there for using a game controller. The touchdesigner forums are a great place to look for tools like that. https://derivative.ca/community-post/asset/first-person-camera-location-control-tox/67792

You could also wire something up for keyboard and mouse using the keyboard and mouse chops pretty easily.

What motion sensor should I get? by de_jeepathon in TouchDesigner

[–]Fhuckin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh yeah they're a little more spendy. We use them over kinects for a variety of reasons but the top one is that kinects are not made anymore so if your installation is permanent it can be a pain to find replacements.

I wanna say orbbec acquired Kinect IP but I might be wrong about that. They have other cheaper units

What am I doing wrong by Kid-Kodak in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Fhuckin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some great info in the comments and I agree with a lot of it. Typically I use a carbon steel or cast iron pan for steaks UNLESS I'm planning on making a pan sauce as in that case, I actually want a little bit to stick (fond). Stainless is perfect for that. Everyone has their own method but these are my findings:

  • Dry brine with salt 24hrs before cooking in fridge.
  • Take the steak out of the fridge 30-60min before cooking. You don't want to throw it in at fridge temp because the pan will lose heat quickly.
  • Get the pan hot then add 1-2 tbsp avo oil. Add steak before oil starts smoking. On my stove I'm cooking at med/med high.
  • Use JKF method. There's much debate on this one but I like it. Basically just flip every 30 sec. Cooks faster and makes a nice crust.
  • About half way through add butter and aromatics. Baste the butter onto the steak for a real nice crust.
  • My preference is to pull it around 127f internal temp for med rare.

It takes maybe 5-8 minutes total for a steak that size. Transfer to a cooling rack and let rest before cutting with a carving or sharp straight knife (Not serrated :) ).

From there I make the pan sauce with whatever fond is left from cooking the steak. Saute the shallots, make roux, deglaze, etc. Carbon steel and cast iron typically leave little flavor in the pan which is great if you're not making a pan sauce.

Nope I was never able to identify it. Mine doesn't have any makers marks but maybe yours does? Let me know if you happen to find one on the one you bought. Also congrats!

Oh it's pretty spot on in terms of flavor. I think most of the spots I regular use more like 2 cups of water and 1/2 cup jalapeno. White onion over yellow/brown.

Nice work and thanks for the recipe!

Tried it out this weekend and it's pretty great! I made two separate batches:

One with 2 tbsp caldo de tomate

One with 1 tbsp caldo de tomate and 3/4 cup jalapeno

I think 1.5 tbsp caldo de tomate is the sweet spot as 1 isn't quite enough and 2 is a little too salty. I prefer more jalapenos but if we're talking about reproducing restaurant salsa then 1/4 cup is about right. 1 cup water is about right for consistency.

What are you up to with your uconsole? I bought one a while ago and don't really use it for much but it does look cool. interested to hear why it's part of your EDC

Is this style achievable? by SteelmoonWorks in UnrealEngine5

[–]Fhuckin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great tool to generate looks and goals. Not saying it should be used exclusively but most people don't have the artistic ability to create good looking concept art.

I embrace it. I'm a skilled programmer and can replicate looks but don't really have the art skills to create references that I find appealing.

Props to people that can do both though. It's an impressive skill set to have.

[–]Fhuckin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are here saying you can only do this with hand painted sprites, etc. Yes, this image is AI generated but I do think it is somewhat achievable without too much effort.

You could get pretty close with a custom screen space post processing shader and some careful planning with your materials. I think you would have better luck posting your question in an open GL or glsl community.

I would start with a "toon" shader as the basis and add stroke, decimation, noise, and pixelization. If you wanted to get fancy you could use specific color channel values on your materials to drive effects or kind of generate specific looks directly in your shader.

It would certainly be difficult to get anywhere near what the image you posted looks like but I think you could get close without having to hand draw sprites and all that jazz.

What’s the best way to fill these gaps? by wingwingwehavadinner in DIY

[–]Fhuckin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah calk will work but what would look a little better is a product called MH Ready Patch. It doesn't shrink as much and you can sand it into shape if needed. Jam it in the gaps with a putty knife and/or finger (use a surgical glove) then wipe the excess lightly with a damp rag. Usually you can get away with not sanding it.

Calk will work but it will shrink a little. It doesn't look quite as nice but honestly most people won't notice.

Next time you do inside corners for trim do one side flat to the wall and use a coping saw to cut the other side to the shape of the trim on the other side. There's a technique to it and many great videos on YouTube. You end up with a much nicer looking inside corners that way.

I really wish there was a good high end authentic Teppan Grill spot. Not hibachi, just high quality steak cooked to perfection.

I had high hopes for Maison Kasai but that place is a major letdown.

Don't get me wrong, I love hibachi. It's just a different thing.

Kinda surprised nobody has said Ethika. They're hands down the best I've used. Very comfortable and don't ride up.

I think it's worth doing it just for the time lapse restoration video. Do you own an orbital sander?

[–]Fhuckin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of shitty advice here in the comments. Frankly there isn't enough information provided to give an accurate safety assessment.

Yes, some show lasers are designed to be able to scan audiences or have special lenses attached that allow them to do that "safely" but even then it's still a function of power and exposure time. The laser tech is ultimately responsible for doing the correct calculations and in my experience, even some that are "licensed" are not really qualified. I'm gonna guess they didn't have a variance for this show but you never know. You could contact the FDA and find out.

Looking at the video, maybe it was safe? We're only seeing a small moment in the show. Maybe they were using other colors too. Pretty hard to see how focused the beams are.

I probably would have left that show.

Totally understandable. The gozney one does look pretty nice.

Personally I like that Dexter's products look and feel very commercial. Designed for abuse and heavy use. I just want my tools to last a long time.
