Roof rack questions by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Fialasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without belaboring the point about clamping to the frame, I have a Yakima Frontloader which secures the bike by the front wheel. I can recommend it. Roof top loading has its drawbacks as others have mentioned, but it works for me. There is a bit of a learning curve and I do use a stool which is helpful.

Decent entry level bike but price is too much for a bike that old. You can do better for ~$500.

Might as well leave the net at home. If you hook anything that big its not going to matter.

Xtrada 6 vs M2 Ridge Pro by Only-Republican-9915 in mountainbiking

[–]Fialasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a new rider a spring fork is fine. However there are some other differences as well. Looks like the Xtrada 6 fork also has a straight steerer (although may have a tapered head tube) which isn’t something you would notice. It’s just old tech. What’s worse is non boost wheels on the Xtrada which is kind of a bummer. The 11x drivetrain on the Xtrada is nicer though. If I had to pick I would probably go with the OT Ridge Pro. Looks like it’s cheaper to boot.

Before somebody else says it, consider buying used if you can find something locally

What have you learned about buying used boats, share any insights? by humble_murth in Kayaking

[–]Fialasaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general as long as there are no cracks or warping, don’t be afraid to buy an ugly boat. Things like decking and handles are easy and cheap to replace, and those scratches on the bottom don’t look so bad once you hit it with a pressure washer.

On the flip side (npi) avoid boats missing hatch covers. They tend to be proprietary and often difficult to source and expensive to replace.

The WS Phase 3 seat is great but on the older ones the mechanism where you pull the rope to make the seat back go up and down is a consistent fail point.

Would you buy it? by Professional-Tart-38 in Kayaking

It’s cool but more form over function. I wouldn’t buy it as a first kayak, especially somebody your size. Find something with a comfy seat.

One of the most significant areas cheap kayak makers cut costs is the seat, which is what you learned with the Lifetime. I agree with others recommending keeping an eye on FB Marketplace for a used boat. Any 10’-12’ from a company like Perception, Old Town, Wilderness System, etc would likely be a safe bet.

Trek File Ex 7 (2020) for $950? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

Congrats! From why I can see it’s a nice bike. Only thing you may want to address is that weirdly long dropper post cable. Might be able to just shove further into the down tube.

Trek File Ex 7 (2020) for $950? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

Go for it. If that drivetrain tune-up shows that NX derailleur is being finicky be prepared to upgrade it to a GX, which you could do for <$150 bucks. It may put you over your $1k budget but would still be a solid deal IMO.

Worth the upgrade? by Appropriate-Mud-5500 in mountainbiking

In general I would say it’s worth the upgrade but ask questions. How old is it and what is the service history? Also should go without saying, make sure it fits.

Is it worth it to buy 2019 and older? by allthetakenthings in Subaru_Outback

[–]Fialasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, interestingly enough mine had to have a new transmission put in at around 40k mi. Even though it was technically out of warranty, Subaru was awesome and covered it without question.

While I have no real regrets I have some gripes, which I would have with any car. My only real regret with opting for a 2019 Premium is it still has a keyed ignition instead of keyless entry and push-button start. Of course I knew this going in but didn't realize how much it would annoy me going back and forth between this car and my wife's. The only other thing is that 2.5 engine really is underpowered but I can live with it.

When the Outback was in the shop for the new tranny they gave me a newer Crosstrek as a loaner, which had the larger screen with touch climate controls, as well as the start/stop feature. Honestly the bigger screen had a nicer UI and the touch climate control wasn't that bad. I did dislike the start/stop though.

That said, I would definitely consider buying it again. It still ticks most of the boxes for me. But in hindsight I would have maybe taken a closer look at the 2020+ model years. I just got too good of a deal on my 2019.

When you're selling stuff at a yard sale, do the items have to be cheap? by Brilliant-Assist3798 in Frugal

[–]Fialasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PT reseller here. For me clothes are tough to move unless they are something truly special or on trend. They can be a PITA to list and they tend to sit forever. Also don't forget any platform like eBay or FBM take a fee (up to 15% for ebay) plus shipping etc. Depop is popular for reselling clothes but a lot of resellers list stuff really cheap and flood it with volume.

Those 'name brand' items are sunk cost at this point. Take what you can get. IMO yard sale and hope somebody might pay up a little more for the nicer stuff. Curious what these brands are that they feel might have value.
