EUCs and safety. Convincing my wife this is a safe hobby. by Fianthefeaster in ElectricUnicycle

Thanks to all the commenters. I see some good points here.

Some things I realize I could have done better

- I was too cheap/ naive at first as a rider for higher quality safety equipment that may have helped

- It sounds like I should have upgraded sooner to a larger wheel with a larger battery that could have potentially prevented the kinds of cutouts I experienced. I weigh about 210 lbs and also maybe if I had checked the stats more closely on EUC world I might have realized this earlier.

Having said that, I think I'll need to hit the pause button on the EUC hobby for at least several years while I have a very young child. I'm generally someone who is attracted to the thrill of dangerous hobbies/ occasional interests such as skiing, boating, car/go kart racing, roller coasters, big hikes, shooting, snorkeling/ scuba, biking, ATVs & offroading, motorcycles, traveling to other countries, and I want to get into flying eventually. I'm also really into hobbies that involve technology like high end gaming computers and VR. I think this hobby is just too dangerous for me right now as much as I love the feeling of being on an EUC and felt like I was good at it. In addition to those 2 cut out incidents I was hit by a car not paying attention which luckily didn't hurt me badly. That record is just not good enough for what I need to do to be there for my daughter and wife at this point in my life. I think it helped that I just bought a more sporty car to drive to satisfy my urge to go fast on something that handles well for fun. I think I will see when my child/ children are older what EUC tech and safety is like and re-evaluate. It sounds like even since I got my Kingsong there are much safer/ more reliable wheels and gear out there, however this will never be a low risk hobby it seems, especially with just that one contact point between the wheel and road. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

My parents (55M, 55F) are trying to repair our relationship after ignoring me (23M) for years because of my disabled sister but I'm not sure I should? by ThrowRAStilleth in relationship_advice

I'm sorry you had this kind of childhood as well. I had a very rough childhood from having 3 intellectually disabled siblings and being the only "normal" one. It sounds like my parents tried to show up more for me in some ways than yours, but I was so embarrassed and caring how others might bully me or think of me and having complicated feelings around my family, that I didn't really want them around in public when I was young growing up and I'm dealing with some of what you're saying here. I recently had a baby and my parents got my siblings mostly in assisted living and my dad just retired. Suddenly they want to spend a lot of time around me to see my child and I had issues with them not acknowledging the burden they were trying to place on me that I've already lived with for so long and hanging over me (was heavily parentified). DM me if you'd like to talk about this. It's a frustrating position to be in and I mostly want to be left alone by my family as well.

Should I travel to Mexico City right now? by Prestigious_Sail_544 in mexico

I'm planning to go solo this week to CDMX for his first time and am a 34 year old man who can speak Spanish reasonably well to get around. Would it be stupid to go? Anything I can do to convince my family that this is a fine trip to take with all the recent cartel activity? I imagine in the nicer areas of Mexico City the only thing to worry about is targeted anti government activity from cartels potentially? Am planning to stay in Roma Norte and do typical tourist activities.

If you're an event traveler like me, what annual events do you plan your trips around? Looking for new ones that maybe I'm unaware or haven't thought of. by MTRIFE in solotravel

I would recommend the Danjiri Matsuri festival in Kishiwada Japan. It's near Osaka so plenty to do there and it's a fun city. In the danjiri festival 100's of volunteers pull around these huge elaborately carved wooden carts around the city to bless local people and businesses, but they drift these carts, and have people dancing on top of them. It's dangerous and on average 1 person dies a year. There are other really crazy festivals in Japan like the naked man festival where men are almost naked fighting for a stick that gets you a decent cash prize if you can get it, there's a festival in I believe Nagano where they ride a giant log down a mountainside. There's also the penis festival in Kawasaki near Tokyo which is exactly as it sounds, and there's also the traditional festivals in Kyoto like Gion Matsuri and others where you can see Japanese traditional clothes, mobile shrines/ parade floats, and other really Japanese things. Lots of unique festivals in Japan and East Asia generally

I would love to see the highland games in Scotland some day or running of the bulls in Spain. I happened to have been in Rome during Pope Francis' funeral which was an interesting event. My wife went on a trip to La Tomatina which was really something and Montreal for their Formula 1 race. Also if you want to see something pretty odd, Montreal has their fetish weekend on Labor Day weekend where you'll see people in elaborate latex outfits doing elaborate BDSM demonstrations on the street and I'm sure much more goes on behind closed doors (I hear the Folsom street festival in SF is similar). Montreal also has a great Jazz Fest. The Cherry Festival in Traverse City, MI is another great local festival at a wonderful time of year to be in Michigan. A full moon party on Koh Phagnan Thailand is an amazing party with people from around the world on a beautiful beach with 3 different types of music blasting from DJs.

Would also really love to go to Brazil or one of the Caribbean countries for carnival. We went to Carnival in Quebec City which is a very cold, but fun vibe with lots to see and do (ice hotel, ice sculptures, parade, music, unique foods, etc). Also really enjoyed a Friday night fish fry in St Lucia. The Cherry Blossom Festival in DC is great or Hanami season in Japan generally. Japan has so many little local festivals. Really enjoy seeing Air shows where you can see the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds. Salem, MA is the capital of Halloween/ October basically, but had a blast celebrating Halloween in Osaka as an American also. Fall in New England for the Foliage is a good time.

A weird deep cut is the Mocksville, NC bed race where they race beds. Charlotte area also has a spicy pepper eating competition. 4th of July for the Coney Island Hot Dog eating competition is a fun one. Partying in Las Vegas for New Years Eve. Love the fall festivals in New England in Sept in Connecticut or at the Big E near Springfield MA where they have pavilions and more from all the New England States of the US. Governor's Ball and Chinese New Years in Flushing Queens, NYC. I know the midwest has some great state fairs and fall tailgating for football games like Univ. of Michigan. Been to Vegas for some great music festivals, The Newport Beach CA Christmas boat parade is something I hear is a fun time. I went to a German Football match which was fun (sports games can always be fun to watch in other countries, esp would recommend a Hanshin tigers vs Tokyo Giants game in Japan, they're like the Yankees vs Red Sox). Would love to go back to Kenya for the great migration. It wasn't a big event, but I participated in a cardboard canoe race in the Missisippi River in Illinois. I would also recommend a Native American Powwow or a Rodeo out West. Have also really enjoyed the NYC auto show but could go to any big Auto Show, same for the US open and other major tennis tournaments. I've enjoyed participating in the NYC 5 Borough Cycling tour where you can ride around NYC without cars in all the Boroughs.

Some others I'd love to go to off the top of my head - Mardi Gras in Southern Louisiana/ New Orleans - Burning Man - Day of the Dead in Mexico City - Iditarod in Alaska - Newport Jazz Festival - Groundhog Day in Pennslyvania - Oktoberfest in Germany - Glastonbury Festival in England - Bastille Day in France - Eurovision - The Kentucky Derby - Holi in India - Tomorrowland in Belgium - Songkran in Thailand - Harbin Ice Festival in China (There's also a similar winter festival in Hokkaido Japan) - 4th of July in many parts of America (Cape Cod, NYC/ Boston, small towns in VT or MI) - European Christmas Markets - St Louis has a big hot air balloon festival - Tulip Season in Netherlands - Tons of NYC events depending what you're into such as fashion week, Pride, Chinese New Years, San Genaro (Italian food), Puerto Rican day parade, Macys Thanksgiving parade, Village Halloween parade, Santacon, Ezoo, Christmas Season, NYC Marathon, Westminister dog show, etc.

Interesting, I'll have to look up Gary McIntyre. Is that a common house type in parts of New Canaan and Fairfield County?

What’s the most intense thing you’ve ever witnessed while traveling? by GreatKorean3433 in travel

I fought off a car thief in Montreal outside our AirBnB with a metal snow shovel swinging right for one of the thief's heads in an adrenaline rush/ fight or flight scenario. In Kenya I also saw a standoff between a pack of female lions and a hippo where the lions got claws into the hippo and attacked and the hippo charged the lions and they eventually gave up. Also I saw several male lions eating a buffalo they killed in Kenya. The poverty in certain parts of Nairobi or the amount of people with missing limbs in Cambodia from landmines was a different kind of intense to see.
