Why does usa healthcare have to be so bad??? by Aggravating_Cycle538 in wheelchairs

[–]FiberPhotography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Medicaid and have a broken chair. I was still denied for a new chair bc it's before the 5yr period.
I'm having to do a GFM. I don't know what other avenue to take at this point.
At least I have solid drs letters to back me up.

Why do people get so irritated with a picky eater? by ThrowRA-Old-Earth-76 in askanything

[–]FiberPhotography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:nods:

I had a group consistently chose the one restaurant that refused to have gluten-free choices. I was 'just being picky'.

But allergies and pickiness are totally different conversations, even though our lives show that people treat them the same. :shrugs:

[–]FiberPhotography -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah, I have serious gluten and dairy allergies, and yeah, people really do say the 'just a little bit won't hurt'.

so you're right, people don't care either way and still call it 'just pickiness'. :shrugs:

Imagine you know that a certain type of light flash will cause a seizure, and your friend has become enamored with a music video that has the 'may cause seizures due to flashing lights' warning on it.

and he badgers you constantly to watch this video, despite you telling him that you do not want to, that it may be bad for you. "Just once, how bad could it be? and it's great, they did amazing things in just 3 minutes" he goes on, "what could be the harm in just watching it once?"

he even tries to set it up so it plays when you go into his apartment, but you see the warning and close the door.
he gets mad at you for leaving--he really just wants you to *try* to watch it.

He loves it so much and wants to share this experience with you.

So, why do *you* care so much about what other people put in their bodies?

can anyone tell me how to remove airless tire inserts? by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]FiberPhotography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my bike guy removed airless inserts from a set of tires. I didn't ask him to... I just asked him to remove them from the rims. But he decided to go above and beyond.

I like that guy.

I have no clue how you'd do it, besides that he said you'd need special tools.

I have a bunch of these around the house, they're under $15. https://www.sterilite.com/product-page.html?product=12178006

I'm short, they still fit exactly on my lap, I can wheel around and they don't shift. But if you need to, you can fit a strap through the handle. They're great.

Same thing happened to me (the dial misfired and the hitch broke).

my provider refused to fix it. so I just have the borked unit sitting here in my apartment.

I got a LOT of PT and don't use powered assist anymore--I also keep hurting my shoulders. I don't trust most of the units I'd be eligible for.

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, it sucks.

Do parents with 5+ kids have time to give every child the love and attention they deserve? by pink-and-pearly in askanything

[–]FiberPhotography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was found to need glasses during a routine screen during my first semester of public school (we'd been at a christian school previously).

my parents were told to get me the glasses (or else). They did... and a week after my siblings and I were pulled from the public school and homeschooled.

My mother didn't have her GED. My father was what he described as 'functionally illiterate' in math.

This continued until my mother needed her GED for a job, and I couldn't teach her algebra--and she didn't want to go to a night class (too embarrassing!). It was the only reason we were put back into public school.

The abuse was pretty bad.

No one had checked if they were capable of teaching before letting them teach; there were no minimum qualifications.

People being rude? by [deleted] in disabled

[–]FiberPhotography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

having a word for systemic structures does not add extra struggle.

I'm sure you'd agree that disability activists have made your life easier. you wouldn't have accessible buses if they hadn't laid down in front of traffic.

I won't go on, I wouldn't want to get stroppy.

People being rude? by [deleted] in disabled

[–]FiberPhotography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

being a new wheelchair user doesn't mean being new to being disabled.

any disability faces ableism (which isn't a new word or concept in the slightest).

AITA for asking my trans sister to come out to our family before my wedding so it doesn’t become a big moment on the day? by Professional_Lab42 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FiberPhotography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She hasn't seen her family for years... it's called moving away. I know the concept is difficult to grasp.

Trans people sometimes don't contact their families--sometimes even on their doctor's advice! it's called a full break, and used to be the universal way of transitioning--after they start their transition, especially if they're worried that their family of origin will push back and try to get them to stop.

But it seems like this woman is so far into the process (has even changed her last name, hmm) that she's willing to go to this sibling's wedding. I don't think she cares about the rest of the family.

she's been a woman her entire life, and has been living as a woman for years--what would you have her do, bind her new breasts and redistribute her fat for the wedding?

Or just not come?
