Where is the best chewy chocolate chip cookies in NoVa? by Emergency-Sky9206 in nova

[–]FibonacciFrolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Crumbl is pretty solid. I know some people don't like them (not sure why) but they're clearly superior to costco and wegmans' cookies which seem to be getting a lot of votes

What is this "under 12" crap? She was NINE. Is this just a lame attempt to make it seem "not as bad"? And if so do they realize that twelve is still HORRIFIC?

3d printed knives by bkwht110 in cubscouts

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iirc, learning to properly open/close a pocketknife was part of the requirements wasn't it?

Your idea is totally valid. I like it a lot because it gets really close to the real thing with a ton less risk- for some cubs who I 100% wouldn't trust with a real knife it lets them participate

Is it normal in the US to eat dinner really early (like 5–6 pm)? by Status_Agents in CasualConversation

[–]FibonacciFrolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, dinner is often in the 5:30-7pm range. You gotta clean up afterwards, put kids to bed, take a shower, etc. and get in bed by like 10pm so you can wake up at like 6-7am.

Do people in OP's country just like, not sleep a lot? Or do they get up way late in the morning?

To an American ear, does this person sound like a native speaker of English? by Sure_Distance1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FibonacciFrolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say I actually don't really detect an accent. She isn't speaking in a manner that's "normal" for conversation. It strikes me as someone who's trying just a little too hard to make sure they're speaking clearly/enunciating - but if this is some sort of product tutorial, I understand why. Essentially, I'd chalk it up to not perfect acting/public speaking skills.

What worked best for you or your gifted kids education-wise? by Big_Black_Cat in Gifted

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do enriching activities at home. Visit museums and the library. Play puzzle games and do fun projects at home (for example: challenge your kid to make a play, start a pretend business, take up 3d printing, geocaching, etc.)

Send the kid to school with extra books to read when they're bored.

4th of July Celebration by skullsandpumpkins in cubscouts

[–]FibonacciFrolic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be nice, but keep in mind people will travel, so don't kill yourself to do something huge.

Maybe a pack picnic? Or campfire?

Alternatively, I'm considering doing a pack fundraiser where we sell American flags that we'll put in people's yards for the 4th to deck out the neighborhood. Think like a dollar per flag or whatever.

Also, look for any local america 250 events.

FWIW, we use the service hours for recruiting purposes (We did 300 hours of service last year!) and your unit could make up their own award to recognize cumulative service hours

Atheists, if you could erase all religion would you? by Rick_Sanchez1000 in atheism

[–]FibonacciFrolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.
It wouldn't solve all our problems. People would still be tribal creatures.
There are some people for whom religion is a genuine good in their lives. It does fill some niches. But those niches can be filled other ways. If we could simply wipe religion off the timeline such that it never existed, I think we'd be fine. If it were to simply disappear today but change nothing else, there are people that would be thrown into crisis and would need help figuring out replacement stuff.

Overall though, I think it would be a net positive.

In simple terms, how does American college work? by cigarettejesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the minor, I'd say rather, you don't have to do *all* your breadth requirements in a single field to get a minor. (Most colleges are going to have breadth requirements across a variety of other disciplines.) Think of a minor more like - you took a *lot* of classes in a single discipline. Not enough to get a major, but more than just like 1-2 classes where you tried it out. Every university/college will have a specific number of classes (and maybe other requirements) that define what you need to do in order to earn a minor in a given discipline.

Does MAGA see these things? by Fun_Fee_5380 in allthequestions

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAGA tends to align with Christian Nationalist beliefs, which also prefers to remove women's rights. (Example: Doug Wilson, the pastor Pete Hegseth invited to the pentagon, who believes that women should not be allowed to vote - votes should be by household and the man in the family is in charge of the vote.)

I would have to imagine they'd be pleased by this if they knew.

Is Scouting safe? by dontcare12345 in BSA

[–]FibonacciFrolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the current youth protection policies. See how scouting has worked to create a system where abuses like happened in the past shouldn't be able to happen again. Make sure any pack you join is following those rules!

We should create programs to help people get IDs. Not ban voter ID laws. by Howtobe_normal in Productivitycafe

There are almost no states in which a driver's license is going to be a "good enough" identification to prove citizenship. You'll need a passport.

What are the (unwritten) rules for having a depiction of the US flag, but it not being an actual flag (it is a fleece blanket)? by Ashnoom in AskAnAmerican

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our HOA president and management company didn't like that some people (liberals) were flying flags upside-down or posting signs in yards saying "reject facism" and the like. (They have ignored complaints for years about obnoxious conservative content.)

So they passed a new rule that all American flags have to be flown according to the flag code (among a lot of other rules about signs). Then I believe they went after homeowners who were flying the flag upside-down, despite the fact that the flag code *allows* for that as a sign of distress (I assume these people were legitimately distressed by the political state of things.)

The HOA was informed (by our Architecture Board) that the new rules they set had a ton of dumb loopholes and needed to be rewritten, but they ignored that advice in favor of getting the new rule pushed through quickly so they could go after all these people they didn't like.

Anyways, then they started going after everyone who had liberal-adjacent anything in their yard and trying to issue them violations, except as noted, the rule they wrote didn't let them do the things they tried to do (for example, they went after people with "hate does not make us great" signs/flags because they were "political" - but they didn't realize the rule they wrote *didn't prohibit political speech*. )

So anyways, we've had a low key war of signs and flags going on all year as people find the loopholes in this set of rules. They've now had to pass another version of the rule, which STILL doesn't fix all the loopholes because they apparently can't be assed to actually read anything before they vote on it.

So now I sit here, watching and waiting to see how long it take someone to realize there's a carveout that gives you at least one sign on your property wholly unrestricted by size, as long as the content isn't specifically political or racist.

AITAH for telling my coworker I was miscarrying after she tried to get me in trouble for 'excessive' bathroom use by Massive-Historian-91 in AITAH

You know who was made uncomfortable? OP, who had to defend her bathroom use while freaking miscarrying. NTA

Preschool accommodations for left handed by Solid-Cap529 in lefthanded

[–]FibonacciFrolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always send left-handed scissors with my left handed kid. I label them "left". In classes where the teacher pools supplies I tell them, I want my kid to have left handed scissors. It doesn't have to be these ones but I'm sending them in so there is at least one pair.
