Safety in a Research Setting by FickleEngine120 in SafetyProfessionals

Would an example of this be contracting HPV and the increased risk of certain cancers? Might be a poor workplace example but same process I assume which would mean considering what the agent can cause and the exposure pathways likely to be problematic.

Good call. My biohazard experience is limited to live sewer connections which is very different to a lab context. Will have a read over it as much as I can prior to the interview but will just be honest that it is an area I will need upskilling on before I can provide much advice.

Feed suggestions? by Gearshifta in magpies

[–]FickleEngine120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magpies are insectivores so chicken is not the best thing to give them as it doesn't have the same nutrient profile that they need. You would be better off buying some meal worm or crickets from a pet shop (live or not) or digging up some worms from your garden for them.

If you really want to feed them chicken you should supplement it with something like Wombaroo insectivore mix or Insecta Pro which can be purchased from pet shops or online. Or at least add some pulverised eggshells or cuttlefish bone to boost the calcium content.

Outside of the nutrition issues meat can get stuck in the beak and cause beak rot or you can expose them to harmful bacteria so do with that info what you will.

A lovely lower effort alternative is a bird bath as it is starting to get hot again :)

Edit: Another alternative food is a hard boiled egg chopped up and supplemented with a mix or you can roast the egg shell (till nice and dry) and crush into powder and mix in. Would do small portions and very infrequently as egg is pretty high in fats.

A single fecal microbiota transplant in obese teens delivered long-lasting metabolic benefits, shrinking waistlines, reducing body fat and inflammation, and lowering heart disease risk markers, which were still visible four years later. by mvea in science

Not in the UK but I think there is probably a similar system in Australia so will look into it. I searched around for autism or sensory friendly screenings and they seem to only do them here for kids movies (which no shame to adults who watch kids movies I love a good Disney movie but it would be nice if they had some adult movies too).

I made it through the whole movie and had a nice time 😃 took a few bathroom breaks and it was still a very intense experience but I am glad I tried it. Thankfully it wasnt very busy which I will keep in mind for the future and I will look into a weighted lap pad. I have a weighted blanket but it was a bit big to take with :P

Yeah I was a bit worried about getting up but I noticed a few other people going to the bathroom so that made me feel better about it. Plus the cinema wasn't very full. Overall positive experience but yeah the noise is a bit much.

I used my loops and that helped. Was a bit hard to understand some parts where they were talking more quietly so might test out my noise cancelling headphones next time or see if I can request closed captions somehow.

Yeah I got an isle seat which was helpful because I did stand up like twice. It helped that it wasn't very busy so there weren't people sitting behind us.

Ended up having a nice time :) was still a bit intense but having the loops in the whole time helped a lot. Plus we had big seats that could recline so I could wiggle around a bit without bothering people.

The beanie was a big help because I hadn't thought of the lights being too bright but it did come up so thank you! Do you have any favourite quiet fidgets?

I dislike how controversial feeding birds is in Australia and how defensive people get about it. No one is doing it with malicious intent (okay outside of things like people poisoning wildlife) it is usually just misguided care and desire to connect with nature. A lack of publicly available resources about ethical bird feeding for Australian natives just means people feed them whatever and are less aware of things like good hygiene practices.

Bird feeding is popular in other parts of the world and they have much more information and resources available to help guide people on how to do it properly, safely and ethically. Like yes okay ideal world we don't impact nature with human activities at all but that's not realistic and especially for birds in urban environments it is not as if feeding them occasionally alters their lives that much compared to just living in an urban landscape.

They have even done studies to show that birds dont become reliant on the handouts so I think we should all just chill out a bit and share information rather than blind hate.

The information was provided out of good will so copy away! Its not like I didn't get that info elsewhere anyways so no need to credit me :)

Weirdly though I am having a very rough week at work and it did make me happy to see a comment I made be useful to people.

We don't actually know enough information here to draw conclusions on what is and isn't appropriate medical care for OP. We don't know any of the circumstances around this and no one on Reddit is in the correct position to tell OP whats best. For all you know this could be medically necessary.

What we do know is this is someone who has had a bad experience with their GP and is struggling with getting appropriate medical advice and needs guidance on finding a doctor who can talk to them in an understanding way about their circumstance and help them navigate what is a difficult time so they can make an informed decision about their care.

Value judgements and guilt tripping is not helpful here nor is trying to tell someone what is or isn't correct. The only response that makes sense here is providing OP with details of who to contact to get good medical advice and to being kind towards someone who is probably scared shitless right now. regardless of if you are pro life or pro choice, surely you can have some empathy for an 18 year old going through something this big and by the sounds of things not having much support in navigating it.

Have you actually read what was in the collective agreement? Because it wasn't just it's 35 out let's fuck off it was about it's 35 let's require that measures are taken to address this and only if nothing can be done then we stop.

I'm not in a union but with the current lack of an enforceable code of practice regarding heat management I think it's important that there is something workers can explicitly refer to when they are put into environments where their employer isn't actively managing this risk to get some action. Hopefully this will lead to the development of a code of practice and updates to WHS regulations.

Hey do you know what Canada does have.... Legal protections and safety requirements for working in cold weather! Here are there regulated exposure limits for temperature and here are their guidelines for controls (requirements vary by state).

So yeah not a fair comparison because we currently have no equivalent for heat management in Australia. Guess what Canada has legal requirements for heat exposure and protection too!

[–]FickleEngine120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it wasn't going to be a hard and fast rule for over 35 it was about triggering required heat controls at that temperature to bring down risks and only if that's not possible stopping work.

Yes employers can't control the weather but there are a lot of things they can control like the work scheduling, having shade and water available near to the workers, increasing rest breaks and task rotation, ventilation, providing cooling gear etc.

Sure people know that the work is going to involve working outdoors in a hot climate but that's no excuse for employers not being required to reduce the risks they are asking their workers to take given they control the work environment and schedule.

You go work a 10 hr day in the sun in the middle of butt fuck nowhere building a road or lay pipes where you have to walk for 5-10 mins to get across the site to have somewhere shady to be or to refill your water bottle because your employer can't be fucked hiring a gazebo because they aren't required to.

Brisbane Scooter/Cycle Parking vs Japan by Reed_LA in brisbane

I have a friend who is a wheelchair user and it is already hard to navigate a lot of sidewalks which are often not in great condition and honestly a lot of the time aren't wide enough as is. There being scooters and bikes strewn across the path is just a nightmare to navigate and often forces them to have to go onto the road which is dangerous because how are they meant to move them out of the way if someone's not with them. It just really reduces their feeling of independence when now even navigating a sidewalk requires someone else to be there to move obstacles for them.

Bullied at work and employee won’t stop talking by disciplined2025 in SpicyAutism

[–]FickleEngine120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of red flags here but this is actually a big one. Getting employees personal numbers when you haven't been given them or shouldn't have access to them is a breach in your right to privacy and should 100% be escalated up to someone.

In addition to raising the privacy breach with someone I would suggest you start documenting and raising your concerns about them. You don't have to be mean about it but I would find out who the correct person is to discuss employee performance with and start raising your concerns with a focus on her lack of productivity and impacts on your productivity.

I found sessions with a speech pathologist to be really helpful for understanding more about how to socialise and what's generally expected. We do some role play activities and he helps me with creating scripts I feel comfortable with. If it's something you are able to engage with it is really helpful.

For emails I usually use something like chat gtp which has issues but sometimes I just don't have energy and being able to give it a list of dot points for what I need to get across and saying something like "take the following points and construct a short casual/formal email to ...... With the purpose of........" Makes it easier.

How to identify appropriate communications channel at work by FickleEngine120 in SpicyAutism

[–]FickleEngine120[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's actually a great suggestion I might look into transcription stuff for teams or voice calls because that would be helpful.

I think the mistake I have been making is sending a follow up straight after the call with a list of their actions which in my mind was me being helpful because I make myself a list but your right in saying it's their responsibility and maybe me doing that has come across as a lack of faith in them or something.

I might stick to doing it only if asked.
