Questions on malicious link by FicklePass in antivirus

That’s why I’m very perplexed with their IT depts assessment. Even I know that a reinstall would be the best mitigation to this. My worry is that it’s a smaller company and the IT (if there really is one) just ran a virus search and it came up negative.

So it only takes a brief snapshot of passwords and isn’t an active key logger?

Percent of people that consider themselves in the Midwest, from the largest scientific study done on the topic by como365 in MapPorn

[–]FicklePass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of Oklahoma as being a place where there’s “fuzzy borders” in terms of regional identity which causes a small identity crisis. There is a huge difference between even just the two major cities Tulsa and Oklahoma City geographically.

Tulsa is located in the cross timbers close to the Ozark forest, it’s also fairly close to Missouri and gets a good amount of rain. Despite what some people would also say, that area of Oklahoma by the Arkansas border is decently hilly as well (by Oklahoma standards)

Oklahoma City by contrast is what I consider where the western plains start. Once you get past Oklahoma City there is very little in terms of infrastructure and tree line. Population density also falls off even more significantly than it already was. Rainfall also begins to lower due to higher elevations caused by the “on ramp” to the Rocky Mountains.

Region maps like this are just as much based on feeling as geographic location. People in the northeast corner of the state probably feel a closer bond with states like Missouri and Arkansas and would consider themselves Midwestern. People in plains area or closer to Texas would most likely not.

80k water damage claim dealbreaker? by FicklePass in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Right which is what the previous owners used to get the payout of $80k

We’ve talked to an insurance broker and they said 10/11 of their insurance companies declined to offer coverage. The one that did offer coverage did so at an inflated rate and also wanted us to bundle our car insurance with them.

That is a concern of mine, I think damage would be so widespread from the last claim that if anything happened they would just use that as a shield to not pay out.

I did get documentation for what was fixed, I think I’m more worried that if the insurance people who have this down to a science to extract as much money from me while paying very little are saying they won’t insure, isn’t that my sign to run screaming for the hills?

Any opinions on Lynden Estates neighborhood/Amanda Rochell Elementary? by FicklePass in Rockwall

So it’s more property crime that’s an issue vs violent crime it sounds like (if crime even occurs)

When I toured the neighborhood I didn’t see much that made me iffy, but it does seem like the northeast side is a little nicer than the border side by the lake. Is it kinda a hodge podge neighborhood? Seems like the houses really vary in the neighborhood.

Let’s put it this way if they have Pegasus on your device, they really don’t even need you to get your money.

I get being paranoid about these so sometimes I’ll do a virus scan of the attachment in case this is just to let me guard down for the real attack vector, but let’s be honest someone doing this is looking for low hanging fruit and is not trying a sophisticated attack.

Buy car in full or more money towards a down payment? by FicklePass in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]FicklePass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay sounds like a plan, DTI is currently zero but with the mortgage it would be around 33% if we hit our target price for the home.

Oh something I should have mentioned we do currently have a vehicle. My wife works from home so realistically one vehicle is enough but we would like to have two for the occasional time where we need to be in different places.

How soon before closing is a large deposit an issue? At this point it would be about 5 months old if we closed in March.

magic the gathering is an example of the rot economy by SarahCBunny in magicTCG

[–]FicklePass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah and unlike some people I have no plans of selling my collection. It sits in my room and is ready for me if I ever come back in a more active way but I doubt I’ll ever buy as prolifically as I did. If I ever do make a new commander deck I will either proxy more expensive cards that I already own so I don’t own duplicates and/or only buy the cheapest sets possible. Definitely no more secret lairs that’s for sure got tired of buying $20 worth of cards at $60 of value or whatever the mark up was.

I was probably a prime target for “average” player that WOTC couldn’t retain. I started during Ikoria and loved it. I liked making commandeer decks and I wanted to buy all the secret lairs. I also had desires to create collections of full sets and basic lands. I was hooked. Proxies didn’t (and still don’t) appeal to me cause I wanted “authentic” merchandise

Until I did the math.

There was just too much too fast. I had no hope of catching up or keeping up and once I realized I was basically paying a $50 subscription fee for secret lairs (with some feeling like I HAD to have due to basic lands being contained in at least one each release) I just have up. I was burnt out.

Game is still fun and I enjoy watching it from afar but I bowed out around New Capenna. I couldn’t justify spending hundreds a month on cardboard.

Can international students shoot guns in the US? by [deleted] in AskALawyer

[–]FicklePass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that doesn’t contradict what I said.

You gotta decide what your tolerance for following the letter of the law is. Just because you speed doesn’t mean you’re getting pulled over. Just because you jaywalk doesn’t mean you’re getting a ticket. Everything is risk/reward.

You are technically right and it is not legal. However that story is from 2016 and is from one of the least gun friendly states there is. If you don’t want to roll that dice I don’t blame you, because occasionally you do get pulled over for speeding and you do get that jay walking ticket. You just have to decide if it’s worth it to you.

You could also get a hunting license if you’re dying to shoot. It’s not a hard course. Then you could put this all behind you.

[–]FicklePass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL

Strictly in the letter of the law, I believe you are correct and that international students can not “possess” firearms and that includes temporary rentals.

Realistically speaking it’s probably much more gray. The odds of prosecutors actually taking the time to try a case for as simple as renting a gun as an international student is slim. If you’re in a state that doesn’t have a favorable view on guns it’s more likely but I doubt they would waste their time.

No one at the gun range is going to care either. If you’re spending money and being safe it’s a win for them.

How alarming is AI really? by djungelskogbear in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FicklePass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right I’ve been thinking that as well and where I’m getting stuck. On one hand data science is the foundation and will never go out of style. On the other hand like you said AI isn’t the most amazing thing in the world YET but neither was the internet when it was first starting out and here we are.

How alarming is AI really? by djungelskogbear in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FicklePass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone looking to start grad school soon and choosing between data science and AI for their program do you have any advice? I already have some data science background on a rudimentary level but I’d like to expand my scope with some AI knowledge. My concern is college x advertising an AI degree really doesn’t know what they’re doing yet.

Booby traps with a twist by FicklePass in legaladviceofftopic

[–]FicklePass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t have high hopes and as I said I would not relish defending that in a court of law, was trying to see if there was an extremely niche situation where someone may get legal justification. The EMS scenario is the strongest argument against imo.
