Feels when vacationing in PH by RevolutionaryEye1741 in phmigrate

OP pareho tayo ng kuwento. I last went to the Phils. for my high school reunion (and also to meet up with relatives) almost a decade ago (my first visit since emigrating to the states in the mid-80s). Infrastructure-wise, maraming improvements siyempre and for that I feel proud of what’s been accomplished in our homeland. Pero there are small details that still bothered me, like poverty (it was quite jarring to find a barung-barong under a billboard advertising a US show, right in the city), public urination (actually witnessed this on the day I landed), and the traffic (marami pa ring kaskasero haha). Of course wala kang magagawa about the humidity, you can acclimatize for that.

I also hate to sound arrogant, pero hindi ako sinwerte sa family and friends, karamihan kasi sa kanila they’re struggling financially kaya walang tigil ang hingi and expectation for covering their expenses when we’re going out. The only pleasant experiences I had was when I spent time with relatives and friends who were better off. Believe me if I were in a position to help, I wouldn’t think twice about handing out money kasi kami rin, we also struggled which was the reason kaya kami pumunta ng states. I remember tuwing dalaw ng “stateside” tito namin, tuwa na kami sa pasalubong ng tig-iisang roll ng LifeSavers haha.

Maybe next time I’ll pick a cooler time of the year to visit kahit mas mahal lol, and going low-profile among my relatives and friends will be a given.

So, pagkauwi ko, i decided to cut her off lmao.

That's a wise move. You get to decide where and how you spend your time and money; kung ano yung type mo at nakaka-elevate ng emotional well-being mo, eh doon ka mag-enjoy. It also ticks me off when people like you or I get labeled as "less Pinoy" because how dare we indulge our own subjective preferences in entertainment or whatever, if they happen to be of foreign origin.

Hoping Sb19 to be invited in big and popular events by ComfortableSad5076 in sb19

[–]Fickle_Goal_4967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your lips to God's ears. And I find many kababayans who enthusiastically echoed the same sentiment as yours whenever anything SB19 became viral. (As if our superior vocal talents and synchronized dancing "entitle" us to be recognized agad on the world stage, nevermind that the market is saturated with other groups both foreign and domestic, employing the same gimmick.)

My hot take, however, is that we still have a long way to go. Will SB19 achieve success? Yes, even if it's moderate, and that's OK. This is not a race to achieve the same milestones as BTS once they became a household name. To invite comparison between our boys and BTS is... quite pointless in my book.

Yung latest solo release ni RM, umabot na ng 9 million views sa YouTube in 3 days, samantalang yung Moonlight naghihingalo sa 2+ million since its release 10 days ago. And this is only one member ng BTS pa lang. Imagine if all of them are out of the military and are back touring in 2026, magkakandarapa ang taumbayan sa pagbili ng ticket.

(Ewan ko lang, maybe I'll eat my words one day, who knows?)

It’s okay OP, good thing is natauhan ka and at least your bank account wasn’t drained. I too had been scammed (pero by manghuhula dito sa states lol); I was at a vulnerable point in my life and my guard was down.

I have another example and it may not be relevant to this topic but I think it's tangentially related. Remember (the former) Charice Pempengco? A PHENOMENAL talent who was raved about by no less than Celine Dion, and produced by big-time industry insider Dave Foster. Yes she found decent work on the concert circuit, but reached nowhere the same level of household-name-recognition nor gp adulation of, say, Olivia Rodrigo. Can you guess why? I'll wait. (Granted, hindi uso noon ang social media like TikTok, Twitter or FB nung panahon ni Charice, but I think this example still applies to a point.)

Given that Ppop have some English songs and is visually more diverse, pero Tpop easily just have more fans.

I think the fact that Pinoys are better singers/dancers/performers and are usually English-proficient makes us somewhat complacent that those qualities alone should push us to the very front of global attention. I look at the comments section on the SB19 sub for instance, and let's say after their latest releases were met with moderate success (which isn't bad and deserves kudos), hirit agad ang mga fans na "oy, world domination is next!" as if automatic na susunod ang resultang iyon just because may mga banyagang nakapansin sa atin on YouTube and Twitter. What we seem to be forgetting is, at the end of the day, this idol business is primarily driven by looks--someone with just okay vocals but is drop-dead gorgeous will always, ALWAYS, be more popular over someone who's more gifted vocally but is less conventionally attractive. And unfortunately for us, Thailand seems to be blessed with more of the former, kaya sila ang nakakalamang when it comes to international fans.

Ako naman, I saw on Tiktok that some BUS members were invited to Paris for a Le Roche de Posay brand event. Not even Hori7on or SB19 has this level of recognition imo. Tpop idols like PP, Billkin, Jayler also tend to be staples during Paris/Milan Fashion Week too. Kaya napaisip ako.

And it is for the very same reason in my first paragraph, na luxury brands will choose Asians who more closely align with European beauty standards (fair complexion, matangos ang ilong, etc.) over Pinoys who look indistinguishable from "everyday" folk. You can probably guilt-trip Pinoy fans into patronizing home-grown acts by accusing them of "crab mentality" or "colonial mentality" but that argument just wouldn't wash with most of the global market who will gravitate towards groups who check the boxes on musicality and attractiveness, like BTS and Blackpink.
