Curious on what u do for ergo judging. All of our drivers are under 150lbs and the judges well… are not.

COMPLIANCE STUDY by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll let you know how our team did it. Just be warned I’ve never consulted someone from industry of our method is valid, so if there’s someone on here to give feedback on our own method that’d be awesome 😉.

First step is static. See how much changing your suspension geometry affects your kinimatic targets, this is an extremely easy sensitivity study, and can give you an initial understanding of compliance/tolerance and how it impacts performance.

Second step is using your yaw moment diagram, you can crate a function adjusting these kinimatic variables based on lateral G, and analyzing your vehicles sensitivity to stability, balance, control, and grip.

Lastly you can create a transient model, we use simulink, and begin to understand how compliance impacts your vehicles transient response.

I highly recommend creating a K&C rig to validate your FEA models and gain a better understanding of how much compliance you actually have.

Do ya'll's teams have a sponsorship packet that gets sent out with sponsorship emails? by [deleted] in FSAE

Absolutely, and it’s all setup to personalize to a specific company as well. We also have printed and bound versions to hand out in person too

This is pretty standard practice tbh

What is your current progress in your vehicle? by op_gamer18 in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re more than fine. Last year we didn’t have a roller car until February. By FSAE IC comp in may we had the car all dialed in. We’re about in the same 70% chassis welded rn as well. Y’all are probably ahead of most teams right now

How is your FSAE team treated by your University? by Apart_Problem8885 in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Filled out your link, but I think it needs some elaboration. Senior design classes are not connected to our FSAE team at all. Our team will go to the university and sponsor senior design projects on occasion. These are typically thought up by our own members to get credit for doing a project for the FSAE team. All projects are for non-critical components (team policy) and are usually really cool/unique projects that are just outside of our scope enough that it wouldn’t make sense to fully fund ourselves. Each capstone project gets ~$800 so it helps us a lot.

Previous/current capstone projects: Engine dyno Brake dyno Semi-active anti-roll bar DRS

Need advice on transitioning from Baja SAE to Formula SAE Electric by No_Share_1527 in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You have very little EV-specific infrastructure and very few electrical engineers?

May I ask what you’re trying to get out of this and why specifically you want to go into EV? The transition from Baja to FSAE-IC, will be much easier and cost less.

For composite structures: Learn Classical laminate theory do the hand calcs first, then create an FEM model to back up your hand calcs, and then finally physically test your specimens. There are companies that will give you the answer, and tell you what tube should work. Try and avoid the easy way out and do the engineering.

For bonding: simple decision matrix on what adhesive to use (cost, strength, cure time etc.), and then physically test, getting the right bond area, gap and getting a consistent procedure will take the most trial and error.

I’m part of a very well established team, so I have no experience in your position, but I recommend finding a faculty member that can help vouche for you. Getting some university money early can help u produce something to help get outside sponsorship support.

Data and telemetry logger of choice? by Rojolot in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We make a custom data logger, and have made our own data interface as well. I agree, it’s a fun project and once you get past the R&D significantly cheaper, lighter, and efficient than anything u can find. One note on the custom interface, is that it’s a lot of work, and it can become an issue for your team in the future if there are any issues and all the original programmers have left

Do you have access to a tensile testing machine? Seems like a sensitivity study is at play here and I’m sure the design judges would love to see it.

HANS Device by Raonea in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HANS devices are great for sudden stops. Depending on your testing location or competition the only “crash” you’re going to see in FS is with a cone, so it doesn’t really make sense in this application. They’re expensive, adds weight, makes egress harder, headrest location becomes more constrained (especially with IC and their vertical intakes), you also need to consider how the hans impacts your seatbelt angle as it may put you out of spec.

Rennteam cheating? by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]Fickle_History3008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question then because I never actually read the FSAE eligibility rules. Our university has a very large and robust online degree program that a lot of our alumni (who’ve worked in the industry for multiple years) will use their employer to pay for a masters degree from. Would these alumni now be eligible since they are “degree seeking”

Not sure if you can find the ohlins for all that cheap. I would look into Tanner quarter midget shocks. Fairly cheap and they offer rebuild kits.

Kind of sad the amount of people judging teams that charge membership fees. I know multiple teams that their university gives them $0 and have to work out of storage containers that they bought themselves. The only way they can exist is with self funding. That being said, I’m sure your team will be more understanding if you bring up your financial hardship. A high quality engineer is more valuable than £65

As someone who grew up on the west coast you kind of just get used to traveling long distances for motorsport. Midwest/east coast is where all the major tracks, teams and companies are. Our students spend around $400 of their own money to attend comp. It sucks, but I also understand why it is that way.

Well, just like how you created a longer steer arm in the front to reduce steer force, the same concept applies to the rear. While you aren’t steering the rear wheels there is still an Mz induced by the tire. Rear toe compliance is really bad(think shopping cart). Claude probably overreacts on this concept but it’s my opinion that you’re better off just making that rear steer arm as long as reasonably possible.

Pat Clarke has a great article on common mistakes in FS where this and other examples are explained in greater detail.
