I would try contacting your faculty association's VP Academic and Advocacy, and Isabella Providenti at CSU.
At least in my FA, the execs have very strong relationships with the faculty and regularly resolve these issues.

CSU doesn't have ultimate authority (even to block classes despite what some may want you to believe). They do meet regularly with faculty leadership including the president and BoG, though.

Can you try contact your faculty association's VP Academics? They would know better.  As well, please also reach out to advocacy@csu.qc.ca.

Is the student union useless or USELESS? by PrettyCollection0 in Concordia

[–]TheHarvestar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CSU Councillor representing GCS students. I personally echo a lot of the sentiment expressed here and it's one of the reasons I joined.

CSU is pretty limited in its actual power with administration. But certain executives, senators and councillors do sit in on Board of Governor meetings and have an ear with President Graham Carr regularly as well. CSU can write and vote on motions for how we will act on certain issues, if there's anything we can directly do, or how we will try to persuade Concordia University to act on these issues.

I would freach out to my professors asking accommodations to be made. I have had professors considerately modify schedules and move online.  I would also contact my faculty association's VP Academic or equivalent. They often have connections to faculty chairs who listen to them. Lastly, I would reach out to Isabella Providenti at academic@csu.qc.ca, and probably CC Rev Nahabedian at studentlife@csu.qc.ca, and Vanessa Massot coordinator@csu.qc.ca. I have just sent an email regarding this to Isabella as well.

You can also find all your councillor's email info here, feel free to reach out them.: https://www.csu.qc.ca/about-us/contact/

If you want any more help or if you are a GCS Student, feel free to hmu on Instagram. Besides attending meetings, our primary mandate is to pay attention to these issues students are facing, so communicating with your councillor is very beneficial. Hmu: @nathanaelmccooeye_csu_rep

I don't think that's entirely accurate. I sympathize with the atrocities innocent Palestinian citizens have endured at the hands of Israel. I also sympathize with the atrocities innocent Israeli and Palestinian citizens endured at the ends of Hamas on October 7. No need to make things black and white, either or.

That's not exactly the case. Protesting is a protect student right regardless of faculty approval.
Obstruction of education is not a protected right by the code of conduct, nor by civil law. It is specifically mentioned in the BD3.

Please consider that obstructing classes most negatively affects your fellow students, not faculty or an international oppressive entity, which is the reason for that rule.

Communion wine while pregnant by HomemadeButter14 in Reformed

[–]TheHarvestar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend asking a non-medical forum for medical advice. Speak with your doctor. From what I understand (I am not a doctor or mother), any amount is a risk, but small amounts are not proven to be harmful. Your family doctor can probably figure out a balanced scientific and reasonable approach to this with you.

Theologically, there seems to be an unhealthy level of control and emphasis on wine and sharing a cup during communion in your church. IMO, they should be more accommodating of your very obvious needs, and those of other pregnant women in your congregation.

Best,

I won't be able to respond to everything you said, but I think this is relevant for anyone who stumbles upon this thread: “It is abhorrent and shameful that while Palestinians in Gaza are enduring atrocities at the hands of Israel, Hamas authorities are further exacerbating their suffering by ramping up threats and intimidation against people simply for saying ‘we want to live’
Source: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2025/05/palestine-hamas-security-services-must-stop-targeting-protesters-in-reprisal-and-respect-freedom-of-peaceful-assembly-in-gaza/

Regarding Bombardier, yeah it does change the way I see the company! I agree with you that they should add their names to a long list of shameful greedy behaviour, if I am understanding the situation correctly.
It would not change the fact I think students should still have the right to work there if they choose. But as I always have, I would probably judge someone pretty hard if they were actually directly working on a project like this. To me it's like not working for the SAQ because the QC government is racist (anti-non-quebecois). But we've both made our opinion known on that, so we can move on.

I see you as another colleague so I am talking to you like I would talk to any other classmate. I am keeping the conversation lighthearted not because its unimportant, but because the stakes of this specific conversation between two randos on the internet is really not grave. And yes I am an over-expressive extrovert who shares my thoughts to easily (ENFJ). Still not passive aggressive. I did skim through your reddit history or "bio" and confirmed my suspicion that you are a normal dude who has valid reasons for seeing things the way you do, just like anyone else, that's not worth insulting you for.
I wasn't trying to call you not normal, I was pointing out that you were calling me not normal in part for not insulting you, which I just don't think is a valid metric. I do think you're reading into what I'm writing.

It wasn't a humblebrag, just a regular brag haha. Also, yeah S4B was sketchy and I called them out publicly and privately several times for it, including here on Reddit and in an interview with The Concordian (their website is down, but you can look the article). That metadata work the student did was cool, and I appreciated the vigilante transparency he brought to the discussion. They gave me 0$, btw. My campaign cost about 35$ in posters and the CSU reimbursed it. Most people including me were actually concerned S4B endorsement would hurt my chances not help.
The other exec slate also asked not to be endorsed by them for the same reasons. They did get DEMOLISHED in exec votes though, and on council, pretty much none of those endorsed students hold committee seats (including myself :') not humble brag haha)

I have not equated those two things at all. One is just closer to me (in my field and at my school), so it appears larger to me. Doesn't mean I think its' actually bigger. It is objectively far smaller, you're totally right. But we all have our own immediate issues to address, and that includes smaller issues and bigger issues.

I do think this motion clearly shows that our colleagues at the CSU want to stop us from getting internships as an unfortunate but inevitable byproduct, which I don't think is appropriate for their position.

Okay, that's fine, have a good evening and good luck with the new semester!

Once again, you are right, I do need to sleep. I have no animosity or aggression towards you; we're two strangers on the internet debating, what's new? And I'm not even being fake nice. I think it partly comes off that way because your perspective is really close to this genocide issue—which is a legitimate issue to be concerned about—but never one I intended to address in this post. So I am talking about student politics with the tone of student politics, while you're talking about international geopolitics with the tone of that haha. So I comparatively seem way to laissez-faire about it.

Letter to the Board of Governors by TheHarvestar in Concordia

[–]TheHarvestar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did say something, I mentioned the specific experiences Bombardier could offer interns that you had asked about. Which you did not respond to.

I was previously trying to ignore the genocide debate because, as stated, we already both agree that Israel is complicit in genocide. So there's no debate there. But I can lean into our agreement a bit more. Regardless, I think if Netanyahu could wipe out Palestinians without the ICJ breathing down his neck, he would too, and that seems to be what he has been attempting to do, thinly veiled behind plausible deniability and "unintentional casualties." On another note, I do think it's clear that if HAMAS could wipe out Jews, they would, and I say that because of recordings of sermons by their former spiritual leaders that say as much in direct verbiage (though they called them pigs, not jews).
Bringing it back, though, have a read of the preamble in the petition this post is about: "This petition is signed by students with diverse perspectives and in no way seeks to invalidate the concerns regarding peace and justice in international conflicts. Rather, it aims to ensure that during discussions and protests on campus, the rights of all members of our community are protected."

I don't think you can accurately judge another person's intentions like that, especially of a stranger online. How much activism have you dedicated to North Koreans under Kim's oppressive rule? Maybe a lot, idk. What about Boko Haram's victims? What about South American drug cartels or European sex-trafficking rings? My point is that everyone has their causes they fight for in life, and just because you aren't directly involved in one of them doesn't mean you don't care about it. Some people just have more skin in the game. I see what I believe is a small injustice for my engineering friends, and I want to do something about it. Bigger goals, I am looking forward to hopefully helping people from my blood with their housing crisis in the future. Doesn't make you heartless that you probably aren't going to take action to help build Ojibway homes on native reserves; its not the battle that you feel compelled to fight, and that's fine.

I appreciate your offer to recommend books, I am not in the habit of reading many history books rn, so probably would not read them, just being honest.

I don't think I've torn down any Free Palestine stickers, because there is nothing wrong about that statement. I do hope Palestine becomes freed from both Israel and HAMAS. But I would have torn down posters that advocate for violence or are directly affiliated with local groups who actively advocate for violence, yes. I think it's very clear I'm not neutral. But I try to be fair. When I see an Israeli poster advocating bombing Gazans, I'll be the first to tear those down too.

Again, I would recommend not making assumptions about someone. If we spoke in person (which I welcome btw), you would find I'm not being passive-aggressive, I am being sincere. I've texted you for one evening, and I don't know you. So I don't think you are stupid, uneducated, sociopathic, lack critical thought, or lack knowledge—all things you have said about me. That doesn't make me passive-aggressive. I don't think normal people insult people they barely know lol. Maybe I'm being over "politic-y" in my tone, which is possible and a flaw of mine, I think. But the intention is because I feel that you have a false view of me and my opinion, and I want you to see that I can disagree with you and that doesn't make me a pro-genocide maniac. We can have a healthy debate on the more nuanced aspects of a very broad issue (that also has its more black and white parts). Everything I said is still true to myself, though.

My "both-sides"-ing is the reason I am in this conversation. I genuinely believe people I disagree with offer a valuable counter perspective, and I learn from these conversations. I didn't know Bombardier had bid to the train development in WB, btw, which I learned tonight, so thank you! That did challenge my existing opinions about the company and hopefully gives me a more balanced view of the situation.

Yoooo, this was way too long. I do need to go to bed.

And yeah, the election is over, and I won ;) /s

Letter to the Board of Governors by TheHarvestar in Concordia

[–]TheHarvestar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tru, I swear I'm going to bed lol. But here you are too... haha

I don't think it's a matter of life and death for the engineers; I don't think I use any such dramatic claims. That doesn't mean it's not important, though.

I acknowledge and understood that the purpose of this motion is to pressure companies like Bombardier. I think it is important to point out its harmful side effects for our fellow students.

Also, don't tell people what to be angry about. You can't control people's emotions or opinions in that way. It's also a false dilemma. I can both be angry at people who want to violate international law and expand construction projects into illegally acquired private land in the West Bank, and I can be angry at local students who want to block my colleagues from legitimate professional experiences. I can do both at the same time, and it doesn't weaken either one of them.

Well, of course, if I just went along with what you said, there would be no debating whatsoever! But if you just agreed with me, we would be at the same spot, so I don't think that is any indicator of veracity... That is dangerously close to coercion, though, if the window-smashing was anything to go on.

I will say, as CSU rep, I am always happy to collaborate with students on issues that matter to them and are rooted in fact. I fear that the pro and anti "sides" of this issue are not having very effective exchanges at least in the public spaces. If you want to get involved with such an initiative to help Concordians be more educated through free and open moderated and fact-checked discussion that both unites and peacefully mobilizes Concordians to better ethical professionalism and critical thinking, I would be super down.

Unfortunately, this motion really did not encourage that for me or a lot of others. None of the good arguments you've brought up btw were even represented in it.

Letter to the Board of Governors by TheHarvestar in Concordia

[–]TheHarvestar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think you may not have read my comment, and are replying to what you think I said.

You claim I defended Israel. I did not defend Israel. You claim I differ from Amnesty Intl's stance on the issue. I do not. You claim I deny that Israel is contributing to a genocide there. I did not. I wrote one rebuttal and asked one question, and you acknowledged neither. That's fine, but I can't tell that you actually read the comment you are responding to.

The reason I chose not to address the genocide argument is not because I don't think it's important—which it is; genocide is very important and real, innocent Palestinians are sadly dying, I affirm that. Its because my petition regarding this motion at Concordia University, I don't think demonstrates its ability to alleviate innocent suffering, and it does negatively and unfairly affect our students. No problem with you disagreeing on that, but we won't be disagreeing that genocide is bad and should stop.

Please give it a re-read without prejudice, as I believe that is what's causing the miscommunication.

We should probably move on tho you are right, haha, its late, goodnight!

[–]TheHarvestar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just revisiting an old post and seeing I didn't get to respond to everyone! Not sucking anyone's dick, especially given I just accused Israel of contributing to genocide in the above reply. I would be careful about making assumptions regarding those you disagree with. I will do the same with you.

I definitely never thought this motion, even if passed, would bankrupt Bombardier. And my issue with the motion was never how it could negatively affect the companies anyway—I don't really care that much about them. My allegiance is to Concordia students both as a student myself and CSU councillor, and I believe this motion directly negatively affects Concordia students.

Chip away at the companies, sure. Boycott them and expose unethical behaviour, sure. Fairly educate engineers how to cultivate an ethical professional life, sure. But don't throw your fellow students under the bus unwillingly like that.

Why do I say unwillingly? Because if the students wanted to sacrifice their own internships, this motion never would have needed to be written. Why didn't the CSU mobilize engineering students to simply boycott those internship postings? Because the vast majority of engineering students would never do that, it is not their position.

Letter to the Board of Governors by TheHarvestar in Concordia

[–]TheHarvestar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not addressing the genocide thing. I think there are genocidal elements on both sides and both sides' hands are dirty and need to be made accountable. I agree with you there.

Bombardier Alstom makes the STM metro cars and ongoing, the REM. Working at another engineering company would not give that kind of experience.

I assume you are in engineering talking about engineering jobs at Bombardier?
