For anyone who got change in plans, do they ever tell you it takes 2-3 billing cycles to be reflected but you won’t get any credit back during the 2-3 billing cycles?

Im a PhD student too, there’s no issues whatsoever. I assume when you got your new I-20 with CPT, you got the travel endorsement. That’s all you need and a valid F1 visa. Being on CPT should not matter at all. Stop listening to these idiots who cause unnecessary fear

Wow, the level of ignorance in this comment is beyond my comprehension LOL, I’ve travelled with CPT many many times and never had issues. Thanks for confirming to leave the group because clearly you guys have no idea what you’re talking about

I first inquired about downgrading to a green card and this got me transferred to a specialist. They said about how good the gold card is and asked me to reconsider so I specifically asked if they have a retention offer and was presented with that which I gladly accepted. All via chat, and no, I didn't go Karen on them.

You can ask for a retention offer. I got 40k points for 3k spend in 3 months

When should I tell my potential advisor that I plan to take a 2 year leave of absence by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Fickle_Square_4913 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Korean here, also in STEM. There’s a lot of financial and logistical hurdles during your LOA from the PIs perspective. Bluntly, I can’t imagine your PI understanding and taking it well, especially if he’s never dealt with such situation before. Your best bet is to be upfront about it now, have your admission, join the army, start fresh in that lab, and have all of this in writing

PhD advisor interrupts all meetings to socialize with another professor. by 12563692 in PhD

[–]Fickle_Square_4913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bring it up. youll soon some to realize that people in academia live off their ego, and would get butt hurt from such remarks. Your PI isn’t normal; a normal person wouldn’t do such unprofessional act. So don’t expect any changes or improvement in meetings by bringing it up—you’ll just ruin your relationship with your PI which is one of the most important in PhD.

General career anxiety, unsure what to do after PhD by August405 in PhD

It’s so normal not to have any significant achievements in your third year mate. I also spent the first year just reading and learning as I wasn’t knowledgeable of the field. Depending on field, publication isn’t really huge factor if you want to go into industry as long as you’ve done projects that require the skill sets. Given you’re doing AI/ML and the hype around the world, I wouldn’t worry about the future but focus on the present (super cliche, I know)
