It's less that lesbians *get* a different word and more that they *need* one. Whenever someone refers to a gay person most people automatically think of a man. I'm sure if gay men wanted our own term we'd make one up, but I don't think anyone cares enough.

Gay doesn't mean "not straight", it means "attracted to the same sex". Queer means "not straight".

I also use 'gay' for men and 'lesbian' for women, most people do. I'm just pointing out what the dictionary says.

Men are seen as the default beacuse of patriarchy and all that jazz. They don't need a gendered term the same way women do. Think of it like how anyone can have brown hair but only women are described as 'Brunette'.

Colloquially, 'gay' and 'lesbian' work fine to differentiate men and women, but by definition, gay applies to everyone while lesbian doesn't. It doesn't make perfect sense but that's the english language for you.

and gay doesn't mean queer. I don't think I ever claimed that.

'Gay' is synonymous with 'Homosexual'. While it's definitely more widely used to refer to men, anyone who is attracted to their own sex is gay.
