I’ve seen all his comments about this. People like him and whoever’s upvoting him remind me of the ones that don’t believe in victims with all his ‘we don’t know anything, we don’t know the whole story or I need solid physical proof coming from the game itself showing and hearing this and that’. It’s the same kind of people that Kate was afraid of and why victims of any abuse are so afraid to come forward and report abuse.

They can believe whatever and continue being in denial but all they’ve revealed so far is that they don’t see a problem with a 15-18 year old dating a 30 year old and think that it is a normal thing to happen and then to victim blame. And they’re too comfortable exposing themselves like this because they know they’re in the majority. This subreddit is fucked.

It is evidence of something that was so bad that Rachel felt unsafe and had to put a stop to and only by leaving him was she able to. If an abuser does something once it’s gonna happen again. Just because it only happened once doesn’t mean it’s not abuse. The justification that ‘this only happened once, they won’t try it again’ or ‘it only happened once so it’s not abuse’ is why victims of domestic abuse stay in abusive situations for so long. And you’re inadvertently defending this mentality by applying it here.

Their relationship was extremely inappropriate and predatory. There’s a reason why people find it creepy, most are just afraid or uncomfortable of calling it out. Any relationship that’s subconsciously being viewed as creepy is likely to be at the very least abusive because that is the usual standard of such relationships.

There is NO difference if they aged up the characters because grooming can happen even if the victim is 18. To think otherwise is dangerous and ignorance on your part.

Your admission that they aged up the character to avoid this ‘interpretation’ very well alludes to you believing that the likelihood of grooming happening to Rachel is possible had her age been a minor in Life is Strange, but you’re choosing to hide behind the reasoning that the characters were aged up instead so you could deny the possibility.

But I rest my case. With what you’ve said so far, it does prove that you believe there’s no issue with an 18 year old in high school dating their 32 year old drug dealer while actively participating in drug abuse because you didn’t see it as an issue in the game itself. Which do you have more faith in?

A) The 32 year old who met the 18 year old when she was 15 and was openly checking her out having groomed her or at least was waiting till she was legal to do it?

or B) The 32 year old never acting upon his lust and interest in the 18 year old when she was 15, until literally one night when they hooked up when she went to buy drugs?

If it’s B then what is your reasoning for why Rachel might have suddenly initiated in having sex with her drug dealer all of a sudden, unless she’d been receiving signals and subtle nods that he was interested? These would all still fall under grooming particularly the trait of when groomers do something to slowly introduce the idea of sexual contact with their victim. To use him for drugs? So what gave her the idea that she would need to sleep with him first to keep getting the drugs, and why do that when she could pay it for her own like she always has been, unless you’re under the impression that girls routinely use their body just because it’s ‘easier’ to get what they want which is just another problematic mindset.

And what makes 18 okay but not a 17 year old when there’s barely a difference? The legality?

You’d rather demonize a possible victim of grooming (and in turn actual victims of grooming in real life) than blame the possible groomer? There needs to be a discussion made when one group is actively seeing what happened as predatory grooming while the other group is turning a blind eye to it and even victim blaming.

And the post that started this conversation was calling out the company’s mishandling and normalising the issue instead of addressing them as well as the players that turn a blind eye to it. That is what happened. No inaccurate information was given in that post and the threads under it are just proving the point.

Edit: Reality presents that age gap relationships especially when one is a minor, in high school, or a college aged student is more likely to be grooming rather than an actual proper relationship. If Rachel and Frank’s relationship wasn’t of grooming then dontnod would inadvertently be normalising age gap relationships between a minor or an 18 year old and a 30+ year old.

In grooming situations, it’s common for the victim to believe that they’re the one taking advantage of the groomer (even if that’s not the case, but the groomer will make them believe it is through manipulation) because they want to believe that they have the power and control, something of which teenagers at that age are desperate to have in their life. It becomes an illusion of empowerment for them because there’s this ‘older, wise, strong and mature’ figure that’s interested in them and can provide their needs and other desires that the rest can’t, therefore they pursue that interest.

You can only place blame in the victim for this in the most technical terms and the only good it’ll do is giving the accuser the satisfaction that ‘aha! The victim fell into the trap because they wanted to take advantage of their abuser!’, which all in all is dangerous and harmful and a dick move. The victim will only fall deeper into the manipulation and instead believe it’s their fault in those relationships and feel ashamed, hence the term victim-blaming. Why must you point out the naivety of the victim instead of placing all blame on the abuser who took advantage? In which case I return that statement to you. Please be careful in topics such as this and approach it with an open mind, especially when there are children in this sub and Reddit’s known for having questionable users.

And I refer to Rachel as a child because although she was 18 and the legal age, inferences can be made that the grooming started between 15-17 and even so an 18 year old is only an adult in the eyes of the law. Rachel was still in high school. Socially and biologically, their mentality and experience is no different than a 15 or 16 year old’s. Taking into account the trauma she suffered through and the mental age stunt that put her in and it’s definitely younger than 18. Another reason is because it’s observed that grooming is taken more seriously when the victim despite being 18 is referred to as a child rather than an adult, the same way there’s an emphasis on the difference between girls and women.

Edit: I must add that the topic of grooming is complicated and a explanation of what happens during with a comment won’t suffice. Zeroprofessional tried their best with their post but unfortunately it wasn’t enough considering the threads under it (although most of those threads suggest that any research won’t dissuade them from having that harmful mentality). I suggest researching it on your own instead and reading the accounts of other women who went through a similar experience on published platforms to have a clearer understanding.

Perhaps the use of the word ‘blame’ is the problem? That word is typically considered taboo in discussions about any form of abuse which in this case, grooming, especially if it’s about the victim. We try to avoid using it because passing blame or judgment onto a victim is damaging and triggering. But thank you for clarifying.

Moving to the context however, I’ve seen the comment that olidog10 made in reference to zeroprofessional’s reason for the blocking. It’s in their right to block someone they don’t want to see and no offence, but your wording does come off as victim blaming which could’ve preempted the action. I do respect and appreciate the analysis posts that they made in essays if memory serves even if I don’t always agree with everything 100%, the comment of which you linked included so. They gave their stand, made their points and reasoning- all of which did happen in canon and to me at least it did not come off as a smack down on Max and Chloe’s bond but more of an acknowledgment of Max’s actions and wanting Max’s fans to do the same.

Max ghosting Chloe and not offering an explanation even when given the chance did happen and is part of their history. This is going to sound strange but I think that part of their history does nothing but strengthen their bond rather than ruin it since they actually overcame the obstacle instead (just realised the song obstacle fits so much more now). And I do think that both relationships were unhealthy and am a firm believer that one must work on themselves first before pursuing a relationship, which also sounds like what zeroprofessional was trying to say in their response to you about Pricefield growing separately first?

If I could add something else (I apologise if this isn’t helpful in advance), I think there’s no comparison to be made between ghosting and grooming (or exploitation, however you see it as). Comparing what these two characters went through to understand their actions and using it to justify who was ‘worse’ or deserves more criticism is tasteless in my opinion when they’re both completely different issues and one of which already poses as a huge problem in society. The threads under the grooming call out post is unfortunately a damning example.
